Stained Glass
The popular name for the glass used in the making of coloured windows. The term is a misnomer, as stained glass is only one of the glasses so employed. It is more the result of a process than a glass per se, as it is produced by painting upon any glass, clear or coloured, with the oxide of silver, which penetrates the glass when subjected to heat and gives a yellowish reaction. In building a coloured window a variety of glass can be used, but usually there is only one kind employed, viz.: pot- metal, a glass that is coloured throughout its substance while in a molten state. This is used either directly or after it has been toned, or ornamented, or made a background for a figure subject by painting the same upon it with vitrifiable pigments, fused to its surface or incorporated with its substance by the means of heat. Nevertheless, although the word stained-glass is inaccurately used, usage has so fixed its erroneous meaning in the public mind that in all probability it will continue for all time to be applied in naming coloured windows and their glass. Christianity The oldest painted picture-window that has survived the action of time is one representing the Ascension in the cathedral of Le Mans, which is believed by many antiquarians to be a work of the late eleventh century. The glass composing it is very beautiful, more particularly the browns, which are rich in tone, the rubies, which are brilliant, streaked and studded with gemlike blobs of black, and the blues, which are of a greenish azure hue, while the general colour treatment is extremely oriental. The drawing of the figures is most effective, although simple in line, and Byzantine in character, differing in this point from those at St. Denis, which are Romanesque. The painting is peculiar in that the hair of the figures is rendered in solid black, and not in lines. Although Le Mans was one of the first places where windows made by the new process were used, yet it did not become the centre of work; the city of Chartres took the lead, and became the greatest of the schools of

stained glass workshop including glass images, patterns and tutorials.
http://www.graphicbuds.com/glass/
Welcome to the stained glass shop. Actually, it's also a workshop since it includes tutorials. If you know what you are doing, just hop to either the glass sections or the patterns. If you have never made stained glass, I'd suggest going to the tutorials first. But I strongly suggest for all visitors at least reading them briefly. I have my own, strange little ways of doing things that you might find interesting. Please read the terms of use I'm just beginning to scan in patterns for use. To begin with, I'm starting with very simple designs. As time goes on, I'll be adding more detailed patterns. All patterns have been saved in gif format, 2 colors. This make it easier on you for downloading. Just remember to increase the pattern to 16 million colors before you start your project . All these patterns have been cleaned and tested for best results. If you resize them, remember to use the pixel resize option to cut down on any blurring of the solid lines. I'm going to give you several variations with the tutorials. Everyone has their own way of doing things, but I try to plan out all the problems someone might run into. If you have any questions about some of my methods, please email me. Hee......I've often had my methods questioned!
: All supplies are free for you to use for both personal and business purposes. You may not copy any of the glass, patterns, tutorials or web pages to post on or as another website, or add them to any other collection. No link back is required or needed for your artwork. If you do place a link back, it's always appreciated. :-)

The finest stained glass reproductions, artwork to span the millenniums, the legendary stained glass of Glassmasters The art of stained glass, hundreds of years old, reflects the very essence of our culture. Living and working in the heart of Virginia, our talented group of artisans have revitalized the bygone craft of stained glass workmanship. Glassmasters utilizes a centuries old technique; in fact, our pieces are painstakingly created using the same methods as the craftsmen of L.C. Tiffany Studios. It is no surprise, therefore, that we hold licenses to reproduce works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, and frequently obtain access to L. C. Tiffany originals that most patrons do not see. Licenses and access are granted to Glassmasters by museums, churches and other owners of original works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Glassmasters uses the term "

  • Condition of the protective glazing or covering, if present, and

condition analysis of one of the 33 stained glass windows in Trinity Church, Boston, gives a sense of the necessary thoroughness of such a report. Top of Page
Findings of the Condition Investigation are compiled in a written report detailing each window individually, prioritizing them based on their need. Conditions including glass breakage, paint deterioration, came deterioration, soiling, and bowing are described, including conditions pertaining to any existing protective glazing. Recommendations are made to address pertinent issues, including protection, restoration, and maintenance. Recommendations for restoration are based philosophically on accepted and established preservation theory, where all original materials are maintained, any intervention the minimum necessary to ensure the extended lifetime of the windows, all such interventions accurately recorded, and all restoration procedures proven reversible.

Leaded Glass
Louis Comfort Tiffany
Louis Comfort Tiffany, one of the most creative and prolific designers of the late 19th century, declared that his life-long goal was "the pursuit of beauty." With its comprehensive assemblage of Tiffany's work, the Morse Museum's collection uniquely documents that quest. Although his father, Charles Lewis, had founded the most prestigious silver and jewelry company in America, Louis chose another professional direction. Originally trained as a painter, he began studying the chemistry and techniques of glassmaking when he was 24. He developed this interest as a partner in the firm of Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, which in its four years of operation (1879-1883) provided innovative interior decoration for clients ranging from Mark Twain in Hartford, Connecticut to President Chester Arthur at the White House. Both schools thought that they alone were being "truthful," an ideal central to the philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement. Equally important was the goal of design unity. First manifested in his efforts to create complete interiors, Tiffany's commitment to unity was extended to the design and manufacture of stained glass. The leading necessary to hold the pieces of glass together became a fully integrated design element, simulating, for example, the stems of plants. And Tiffany was convinced that the actual production of a stained-glass window required the artist's involvement at every stage, even in a factory setting-from creating the first sketches to overseeing how the glass was selected, cut and assembled.

80. Medieval Stained Glass Windows From Esslingen (Germany) - 1
Exhibit of 13th and 14thcentury German stained glass. Full-color images, withcommentary on background, techniques, construction, and artistic themes.
http://home.bawue.de/~wmwerner/essling/english/glas01.html
Medieval stained glass windows
from Esslingen am Neckar
(Germany)
O ver 400 stained glass panes dating to the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved in three churches in Esslingen. Practically all the themes found in the sculptural repertoire of the great French Cathedrals of this time are represented, including the Virtues and Vices. Even the everyday life of the citizens of Esslingen is reflected, in scenes from the Life of Mary. The windows give a unique insight into the Medieval world, and into the technical and artistic aspects of the production of stained glass. T he central attraction is the windows from the City/Parish church St.Dionysus, made between 1280 and 1330 and recently painstakingly restored. Stained glass windows from the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady), built by and for the citizens of Esslingen from 1320-1508, and from the choir of the (previously) Franciscan church can also be seen in this Internet exhibition.
