St. Vincent and the Grenadines – The Jewels of the Caribbean
Destination Information St. Vincent and the Grenadines is part of the Windward Islands and comprised of more than 30 islands. The largest is St. Vincent, covering approximately 150 square miles, from which The Grenadines extend 45 miles to the southwest. The major islands from north to south are Young Island, Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island, Palm Island, and Petit St. Vincent. St. Vincent offers lush mountains and unspoiled landscapes of brilliant flora and beautiful crystal clear waters. Add to this the idyllic islands and deserted cays of the Grenadines, and the entire country emerges as a prime eco-playground. There’s something here for everyone from sailing and dolphin-watching, to hiking the nature trails and swimming in waterfalls. You can climb to the top of a volcano, or explore the fascinating underwater gardens. Diving sites abound in the turquoise waters of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Abundant reef-life, normally found at 80-ft in most dive destinations around the world, flourishes here at depths of only 25-ft, with an extraordinary variety of tropical reef fish. The shallow-water reefs surrounding almost every island make snorkeling an exciting adventure.

Saturday, July 6, 2005 – 12:30 p.m. Gathering in Silence
Call to Prayer
Lighting of Candle Invitation Welcome today to this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country. Blessed is the name of our God who is mindful of this people as we worship the Prince of Peace in faith and joy. Scripture Reading - Mosiah 11:207 And how blessed are they! For they did publish peace; they did publish good tidings of good; and they did declare unto the people that the Lord reigneth. Zechariah 8:16 These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another, render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace. James 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Early Peoples of St. Vincent and the Grenadines: The Caribs (and the Garifunas) The first settlers of these islands were a group of hunter-gatherers, the Ciboneys, who explored and lived on the islands eating fruit and berries, seashells and the pink conch more than 5000 years ago. More than 200 years before Christ, another culture traveling in 50 foot dugout canoes arrived in these islands. The Arawaks carried fire-burners, animals and plants. During a 1500 year period the Caribbean islands were peaceful. Sometime in the around the period after 1000 AD, the peaceful Arawaks were invaded by a wandering culture from South America known then as the Kalinga and named the Caribs by later Europeans. The Arawaks of most of the small, southern Caribbean islands did not survive the invasion of the Caribs who killed the men and carried off the women. The Caribs were fierce fighters and strong swimmers. Captured Arawak women refused to speak the Carib language, but eventually the Tupi-Arawakian language died out along with the beautiful pottery created by these women. Today, we know very little about these early settlements other than some petroglyps left on rocks

St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a multiparty, parliamentary democracy governed by a prime minister, a cabinet, and a unicameral legislative assembly, with a governor general as titular head of state. In 2001 elections that were generally free and fair, the Unity Labor Party (ULP) won 12 of 15 parliamentary seats, and ULP leader Ralph Gonsalves became the new Prime Minister. The judiciary is independent. The Royal St. Vincent Police, the only security force in the country, includes a coast guard and a small Special Services Unit with some paramilitary training. Civilian authorities maintained effective control of the security force; however, some members of the security force committed human rights abuses. The market-based economy was small, weak, and heavily in debt. The country's population was approximately 117,000. The economy primarily was based on agriculture (particularly bananas), construction, and tourism. The country continued to suffer from a high rate of unemployment and low per capita gross domestic product (GDP). Unemployment was estimated at 25 percent in 2003. Real GDP rose to 3.6 percent for 2003 following improvements in the construction, manufacturing, communications, and trade sectors. Consumer prices increased approximately 1.7 percent during the year.

Visions of Paradise Island History and Geography
A Brief History St. Vincent and the Grenadines is an independent state with a stable, democratic government. Formerly part of the British colony of the Windward Islands from 1871 to 1969, it became a British Associated State for 10 years prior to full independence in 1979. The governmental system is based on the British system. English, with a unique Vincentian / British accent is spoken throughout the islands. The British era of the islands' history covers only a short period of time. Archaeologists' research name the prehistoric settlements in the Grenadines as the last intact chronological evidence of South American cultures migration to the area. Buried in the scrub and soil, the Archaeologists found a great diversity of ceramic styles from these migrations. Roughly hewn stone and shell tools and axes made by stone-age men more than 7000 years ago are found in the islands. These tools belonged to a group of hunter-gatherers, the Ciboneys, who explored and lived on the islands eating fruit and berries, seashells and the pink conch. More than 200 years before Christ, another culture travelling in 50 foot dugout canoes arrived in these islands. The Arawaks carried fire-burners, animals and plants. During a 1500 year period the West Indian islands were peaceful, but the peaceful Arawaks could not survive the invasion of the Caribs who killed the men and carried off the women.
