http://www.crystalinks.com/stpatricksday.html
St. Patrick's Day (March 17) is the formal national holiday on which Ireland celebrates its patron saint, St. Patrick. In recent years the celebrations in Dublin have been extended to a week-long event called St Patrick's Festival, encompassing a spectacular fireworks display (Skyfest), open-air music, street theater and the traditional parade. The topic of this year's (2004) St Patrick's Symposium is "Talking Irish" during which the nature of Irish identity, economic success and the future will be discussed. Many Irish people wear a bunch of shamrock on their lapels or caps on this day, while children wear tricoloured (green, white and orange) badges. Girls traditionally wore green ribbons in their hair (many still do). St. Patrick's Day is celebrated worldwide by the Irish and those of Irish descent. A major parade takes place in Dublin and in most other Irish towns and villages. Parades take place in other centres, London, Paris, Rome, Moscow, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore and throughout the Americas. The first civic and public celebrations of St. Patrick's Day took place in Boston in 1737. The first St. Patrick's Day celebrated in New York City was held at the Crown and Thistle Tavern on March 17, 1756. Since then the New York celebration has become the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the world (see external link). The parade dates back to 1762, and in 2003 more than 150,000 marchers (bands, military and police groups, county associations, emigrant societies, social and cultural clubs etc.) participated. It has however been dogged with controversy in recent years; its organisers controversially banned Irish gays and lesbians from marching as a group - an act which has led to calls in Ireland (which, since 1992 has some of the most liberal gay laws in the world) for its boycotting. On occasion it appointed controversial republican figures (some of whom were barred from the US) to be its Grand Marshal.

St. Patrick is revered by Catholics for establishing Christianity in Ireland during the fifth century AD. The precise dates and details of his life are unclear, but some points are generally agreed: as a teen he was captured and sold into slavery in Ireland, and six years later he escaped to Gaul (now France) where he later became a monk. Around 432 he returned to Ireland as a missionary and succeeded in converting many of the island's tribes to Christianity. Late in life he wrote the brief text Confessio detailing his life and ministry. His feast day, March 17, is celebrated as a day of Irish pride in many parts of the world. A popular folk tale says that St. Patrick chased all snakes from Ireland, but there is no historical basis for this story... Another folk tale, that he used shamrocks to teach about the holy Trinity, is also generally agreed to be a myth... In Gaelic the saint's name is

The fifth largest Irish community in the world is in Argentina, and it's important to point out that Argentina is a non-English speaking country.
Hence the more than 500,000 Irish-Argentinean families living in Argentina today are a great example in terms of traditions and cultural heritage power, surviving after over a century and a half taking in consideration the huge and inevitable language barrier.
But Argentina was, and still is an official Catholic country with freedom of cult -for all the other religions and cults-, and this was a great input for those Irish catholics who were running away from the British protestant power.
All and all, it were the broad and huge pampas who welcomed the new immigrants into a world of work in the fields and the posibility of surviving on something else than potatoes. The west frontier was still open -alike in the US- and by 1850s the sheep cattle grew at an amazing rate, together with Spanish and Italian immigrants, the Irish population that set in Argentina were helping this upcoming country to develop into a Nation.

St. Patrick - Patron Saint of Ireland
by Patricia R. Chadwick Since many stories and legends have been told regarding St. Patrick it is difficult to separate the facts from the myths. We do know, however, that Patrick was born around 387 AD in Roman Britain. His father was a magistrate and Patrick, as his name implies, was of noble birth , (those of more noble rank among the Romans were called Patricians). When he was sixteen, Patrick was carried off by a band of Irish raiders and was made a slave in Ireland. Here he became a shepherd and served his master faithfully. While spending long and often lonely days in the forests or hills with his sheep, his love for God grew stronger and his faith increased. After six years, Patrick was set free and allowed to return home to his family, who had given him up for dead. While in Ireland, Patrick had become a devout young man. Upon returning home, Patrick felt the call of God on his life and he prepared himself to become a priest. Though he was thankful that he was able to return home, he couldn't seem to forget Ireland. It is said that while he was in Britainny Patrick had a vision, comparable to the one that St. Paul, saw before he went to preach the gospel in Europe. He saw someone making signs to him to come over and preach and teach the people of Ireland. In 432, Patrick, who was now a Bishop, set out for Ireland as a missionary. The fact that he already spoke the people's language and that he had a respect for the Irish culture helped him tremendously in his work and he was gladly received by the people of the Emerald Isle. He taught them that it was wrong to worship creation rather than the creator and how terrible it was for them to sacrifice their little babies in their "Valley of Slaughter", thinking that by taking the lives of their infants they were pleasing the horrible gods they served. For up to this point, Christianity had not made much headway in this land where the people knew nothing of the Bible and the Church.

The Origin and History of Saint Valentine
The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honor of a heathen god.

99. Saint Patrick S Day
The well known legend of the Shamrock connects it definitely to st. Patrick andhis teaching. in the faith and the feast of Saint Patrick s day.
http://www.basecamp.cnchost.com/patrick.htm
Possibly the only national holiday that is given recognition outside it's native land is Saint Patrick's Day. This is a clear indication on the Irish influence though out the world. For instance in the United States, though not a national holiday, March 17th is recognized in many communities and cities. Everything from parades, to the 'wearing of the green' , to serving green beer (they really add green coloring to it!) to some places going as far as dying rivers green, mark the holiday of Ireland's Patron Saint. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. Almost all businesses, with the exception of restaurants and pubs, close on the 17th of March. Being a religious holiday as well, many attend mass, where it is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries through out the world, before the serious celebrating begins in earnest. So who exactly was Saint Patrick? True history and legend are intertwined when it comes to St. Patrick. It is known that he was born in Scotland and was kidnapped and sold in Ireland as a slave. He became fluent in the Irish language before making his escape to the continent. Eventually he was ordained as a deacon, then priest and finally as a bishop. Pope Celestine then sent him back to Ireland to preach the gospel. Evidently he was a great traveler, especially in Celtic countries, as innumerable places in Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are named after him. Here it is where actual history and legend become difficult to seperate.
