St. Patrick's Day
There wasn’t much festivity at our house this year. We had the traditional and very delicious corned beef and cabbage and I wore my County Sligo sweatshirt but that was about it. At the last minute, I thought to try and get the kids some greenery to wear. By the time I got around to going to the store, though, all of it was gone. All of it was probably gone the first week of March. Anyway, the kids didn’t wear green today – unless it was on their underwear. Well, I thought to myself, we are American. I don’t think we’re hyphenated Americans anymore. Before I got married, I was very much an Irish American. My grandparents came to the United States from County Sligo sometime before WWI. The whole family could sing. Just about the whole family drank, which is not something I’m particularly proud of. We always had corned beef and cabbage for dinner and my father always wanted a toast. We’d click our glasses and he would try to say “Slainte.” When I was 15, I happened to see the Scanlon family crest. It was really cool looking, with fierce looking anibeasts on the shield. I think they were crowned lions but it’s been a long time. Anyway, I made a template and used it as a design for my hooked rug project at school. I had the most fun working on it!

Or mail it direct to Slugger July 08, 2005 A St Paddy's Day for all... A GENEROUS response in the Andytown News to the news that Belfast City Council is to support the St Patrick's Day carnival. There is also an acknowledgement that nationalists "will be reasonable and magnanimous when it comes to those aspects of the St Patrick's Day celebrations that many unionists genuinely have trouble with". For non-nationalists, that would, in many cases, include the flying of the Irish flag. Just recently, Dr John Nagle of Queen's University's Institute of Irish Studies examined attitudes in Northern Ireland towards St Patrick's Day. Some of the responses he got are below. A Presbyterian student summed up a typical Unionist view of celebrations in Belfast: I went into Belfast city centre and I wish I had not. Lots of drinking and drunk people making fools of themselves, annoying children blowing whistles and lots of Irish flags being waved. I felt scared to look at anyone in the wrong way for fear of being attacked. I would like to see future events where Unionists could be made feel welcome. As it stands at the minute St. Patricks Day in Belfast is nothing more than a republican festival. A Protestant, Irish Nationalist who went to the celebrations at Belfast City Hall with his children articulated a similar position:

Deseret Morning News
Stuart Johnson, Deseret Morning News Paul O'Connor's family hosts a party for all the Irish locals, which is sometimes over 100, on St. Patrick's Day.
It's a day filled with fun and frivolity, friends and food. The Irish colors of orange, white and green fly and everyone comes prepared for a rollicking good time.
The Sullivans, the O'Neills, the O'Reillys and the O'Briens all come.
Sometimes the numbers get so large the O'Connors have to move the party out of their home to a bigger place.
"We usually have about 50, but we can get up to 100 people," said Clarissa O'Connor, who fixes traditional Irish colcannon potatoes, stew and soda bread for the evening's fare.
The O'Connors plan games and activities for the children that includes hunting for treasure left by leprechauns at the end of the rainbow, attending Irish school and leaning back to kiss the Blarney stone.
"All the local Irish families come to our house. We have them hanging out of the windows," said Paul O'Connor. "It's an Irish party so everybody has to sing or recite poetry or share a joke. Irish people can really party. They're not shy."

Me name is St. Patrick and Welsh is What I Be!
Every March 17th, there is a mad rush of people all over the world to declare themselves Irish Bog Trotters by putting on something emerald green in color, swilling green beer, and marching about singing sentimental American songs written about Ireland. These antics are thought to make every person on earth not only Irish, but Catholic as well, even if they were Protestant, Jewish, Moslem, Buddhists or Shinto. I wholly support this wonderful camaraderie on the 17th of March, but how come, on the 18th of March, we all revert to regular beer and continue throwing grenades at each other. St. Patrick tried to teach the Irish to be civilized, but the whole world keeps acting like barbarians lost in a fog of Guinness Ale. Regardless of your faith or ethnic background you may continue with your St Patrick Parties, parades and fun, but mark on your forehead (or a Shamrock) with a green Magic Marker one word, PEACE
All wars and revolutions must be just the killing of strangers against whom you feel no personal animosity; strangers whom, in other circumstances, you would help if you found them in trouble, and who would help you if you needed it.

A Guide to the Celebration of the Wearin' o' the Green
St. Patrick’s Day originated in Ireland in honor of the missionary who brought Ireland Christianity. He also drove all of the snakes out of Ireland and taught the concept of the Holy Trinity using a shamrock, hence the connections these plants have with the holiday. Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated in Ireland the United States and Canada with parades, dances and dinners. The largest parade held on this special day is in New York City where everyone is Irish for a day. The following are the Curriculum Library’s best picks for St. Patrick's Day with which you can brighten your classroom with the color green, rainbows and pots of gold as you study Ireland, the “Emerald Isle,” and celebrate this great holiday. Objectives: To gain a little knowledge about why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated all over the world. To distinguish between fact and fiction. Materials: Create a story strictly about the facts of Saint Patrick. Create a worksheet to allow discussion about fact or fiction. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. A patron saint takes special care of a country or group. Saint Patrick was a caring person and did many nice things for the people of Ireland. Saint Patrick was born in 385 and died around the year 460. That is over 2,000 years ago. Saint Patrick died on March 17th. March 17th is the day Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated. People march in parades and marching bands play. Corned beef and cabbage is a favorite meal on Saint Patrick's Day. Many people wear green on this day. Green is an Irish color because of a few reasons. The first reason is because the green shamrock leaf is a symbol of Saint Patrick and Ireland. The Irish say a shamrock brings good luck. The second reason is because Ireland is called the "Emerald Isle" with lots of green pastures. The third reason is because the people of Ireland would burn green leaves to spread over their land to make their soil richer.

Saint Patrick's Day Teaching Tip
by Freda J. Glatt, M.S.
Top o' the mornin' to ye! Do you have your green ready to wear? Whether or not you are Irish, this holiday is fun for all and presents the opportunity for a multi-cultural lesson. Here are some ideas for you to try.
1. Speak to your children using an Irish brogue. This will captivate their interest!
2. Who was St. Patrick? Why is there a holiday named for him? Are Irish children in school on this day? Let children do research to find out.
3. Discuss some of the symbols for St. Patrick's Day and explain what they mean. Classify them as real or unreal. For instance, shamrocks are real but pots of gold at the end of the rainbow are not.
4. Read aloud part of a fictional St. Patrick's Day story. Have your children write their own endings. Read them out loud or hang them on a bulletin board for all to read. NOTE: This may also be done with small groups of children working together!
5. Afterwards, read the ending of the story you started. Have the children compare the author's ending with their outcomes. Which was more realistic? Which was more funny? Which did they like best?
5. This would be an excellent time for a cooking experiment. Remember the story "Green Eggs and Ham?" Try making some green eggs, green vanilla pudding pops, or anything else that would be suitable for your age group. Green food coloring could be added to white frosting before icing some cupcakes. Let the children taste the frosting while it is white and ask them to predict how it will taste after it becomes green. Were they right?

Some 1,500 years ago a teenage boy from what is now Great Britain was kidnapped and enslaved by marauders from a neighboring country. Not since Paris absconded with Helen of Troy has a kidnapping so changed the course of history. The invading marauders came from fifth-century Ireland. The teenager they captured eventually escaped, but returned voluntarily some years later. In the meantime, he had become convinced that he was handpicked by God to convert the entire country to Christianity. Apparently, he was right. In the process of converting the primitive people of Ireland, however, the former slave experienced a conversion, too. In the years that followed, he not only shared God with the people of Ireland, but also grew in his understanding of God through them. And so it was that a young Briton named Patricius died an Irishman named Patrick. And neither Ireland nor Christianity was ever quite the same. This conviction of Thomas Cahill, Catholic author of the best-selling book
