Saint Patrick s Day
Every 17 March, Irish people all over the world celebrate St. Patrick s Day in honour of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Let s find out what was so special about that person. When St. Patrick was born, his name actually was not Patrick but Maewyn. He grew up in Wales, but when he was 16, people kidnapped him and sold him into slavery in Ireland. Maewyn spent six years as a slave in Ireland, but then he escaped and went to Gaul in France where he studied in a monastery for 12 years. Finally, Maewyn became a bishop and adopted the Christian name Patricius (in English: Patrick). Furthermore, Patrick explained the holy Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) with the help of a shamrock, which grows everywhere in Ireland. The shamrock has three equally sized leaves and Patrick used this to show how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit could exist as separate elements of the same entity. There are several legends about St. Patrick, for example that he banned all snakes from Ireland (still now there are no snakes in Ireland). People also say that Patrick met some Irish legends such as the

Hearing Horton Hears a Who A Turkish Saint Patrick's Day Dinner
On Saint Patrick's Day we arrived at the Irish Pub a little later than we had planned since we spent extra time meandering though Newport Aquarium with Clayton and his family. We listened to some live Irish music, but it was standing room only, and the servers told us we would have to leave in a half hour because the family place we frequent so often was going Over 21 at five o'clock (!) Hmmpphh.

I look at St. Patrick's Day much different now... since becoming a Christian. But I still feel it is a day I need to take pride in, since somewhere in my ancestors past, they lived in Ireland and passed along to me my Irish background.
Growing up, my father was so "into" this day. It was so important to him that we wear a "bit o the green" that day. Mom would cook special food and Dad even went so far as to buy us girls flowers to wear at school! He loved to whistle "Danny Boy" and anything Irish he could remember. I remember him having a tie that had shamrocks and would tease my mom for not wearing green herself. (she is French) and I think she enjoyed getting his goat so to speak in not wearing it!

Saint Patrick
From Ten Saints , by Eleanor Farjeon.
Nial said, "I might, if I got his price."
"What is he?" asked Milcho.
"One that we took in a raid off the Scottish coast."
No, Nial," broke in one of his men, "it was in that raid off Wales-or would it be the one off Cumberland?"
"Neither," declared another, "we got that boy in Cornwall."
"You're wrong!" cried a third. "That's the one we took off a farm in Gaul."
While the Picts fell to quarrelling about where the boy came from, Milcho said to Nial, "It's all one. What do you want for him, anyhow?" And the chief and the king began their haggling all over again.
Nial had the boy fetched out of the boat, and said to Mileho, "There's a tall one for you!"
"I've seen taller," said Mileho.
"Mark the breadth of his shoulders," said Nial.
"I've known broader, said Mileho. "Feel the muscles on him!" boasted Nial. Milcho did so, and said, "I've felt tougher." The king ran him up, and the chief ran him down, and so at last the bargain was concluded, and Milcbo led the boy away to be his slave on the Mountain of Sleamish. On the way the chief put questions to the boy, about whom the Picts had made so much argument. "Where did they take you?" he asked.

Posted by: Anji at March 18, 2005 01:49 AM I do believe there's a wee bit of Irish on my maternal grandmothers side of the family. Seems her mother and father were born on the Emerald Isle. They were aghast when their lovely daughter married a young man of German descent. So on my mothers side there's Irish/German and on my father's it's 100% Greek.

St. Patrick's Day
Posted by Paula Hartley
Hello, I'm beginning to realize why sterotypes emerge.
I grew up in Ireland and I don't remember lucky charms, marshmellows, leprehauns, rainbows or black pots associated with St. Patrick's Day.
There are many stories about St. Patrick and they are all related to Ireland and it's people, why not start there. A few ideas would be to have realistic pictures of Ireland and the people of Ireland as it is today. National Geographic is a good source and display them around the classroom. Make your own island and teach orientation skills. Take a trip to a farm to see sheep being sheared. Learn all about farm life and the wool industry. Use St. Patrick's Day as the start of your outdoor garden work. It makes a nice benchmark for the beginning of the spring planting season. Talk about the Shamrock as Ireland's symbol. Use a cut out shamrock for color mixing to get green. In cooking make Irish
Soda Bread which is still made in most Irish homes today or Shepherd's Pie. Talk about Gaelic being the first language in the west of Ireland and teach a few everyday words.

Feast of
St. Patrick
St. Patrick (ca. A.D. 385-461) was born in Scotland! He was the son of a high-ranking Roman family, but was carried off into slavery by Irish marauders when he was 16 and forced into shepherding. While in captivity in Ireland, though, he learned Celtic and the ways of Druidism, as his master was a Druid High Priest, two bits of knowledge that would help him later in evangelizing Irish pagans. He escaped his master, travelled about a bit but desired to return to Ireland to evangelize, a task he was entrusted with by Pope Celestine I, and a task he was most successful at (legend says that he even drove the snakes from that land with a sermon).
Needless to say, St. Patrick is very dear to the Irish people, including - maybe especially Irish Americans. The symbol of this day is the shamrock because St. Patrick used the plant as a visual aid in describing the Trinity three leaves, one stem and the Cross, which is evoked by its general shape.
A beautiful prayer for the day is "St. Patrick's Breast-plate" (Faeth Fiada," or the "Lorica of St. Patrick"). Below is a poetic version of this gorgeous prayer:

ST. PATRICK
the TRINITY ...one God, three Persons
deliverance from the demonic St. Patrick was born in 432 in Scotland. When he was quite young, he was taken into slavery and brought to Ireland (relocation). Slavery is evil. It is child-labor....it is separation from home and great heart break. It is when you are exploited by another to his advantage; and it is hard labor with no decent wages.....no economic way to break out of the slavery cycle. You become property , rather than a person.
Ireland in the 5th Century was steeped in deep darkness and the occult. Mythology permeated every aspect of the people's lives. They were totally a pagan nation. They believed that the god of fire was to be reborn each Spring, by having their tribal king light the first fire of the year. From his fire alone, the people would kindle their own homes.
But St. Patrick lit his own fire, and for this act he was brought before the king. To which St. Patrick replied, "Here am I" [Isaiah 6:8]. St. Patrick was bold in his beliefs. From that point on, St. Patrick was anointed and appointed by God to preach to this heathen nation. He lit the fire of the Gospel which has not been extinguished for approximately 1600 years.
THE TRINITY
Patrick taught the people about the Living God. He taught them that God was not pantheistic-to be worshipped in nature (like "Earth ethic" suggests).

    Myths of St. Patrick's Day
    By Edward T. O’Donnell

Learn more at www.EdwardTODonnell.com Elsewhere on HNN So Who Was St. Patrick? St. Patrick's Day in Ireland St. Patrick Was Irish Not exactly. Although no one knows for certain where St. Patrick was born, based on his own account it was most likely in southwestern Britain. As a result, it’s fairly common to find various pundits gleefully commenting on the "irony" that Ireland’s patron saint was actually "English." The problem, of course, is that no one in the 5th century was what we would call "English." Rather, the people living in present-day England were Romanized Celts, or Britons. So Patrick is thus more accurately called a Celtic Briton, son of a low-level Roman official. St. Patrick Was the First Christian Missionary to Ireland
