The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn.
When he was 16, he was sold into slavery to Ireland where he was a shepherd for 6 years. While in captivity he studied and turned to religion. He escaped slavery and later returned to Ireland as a missionary, determined to convert Ireland to Christianity. He used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.
Patrick was quite successful at winning converts. And this fact upset the Celtic Druids. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity.
His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired to County Down. He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.
Much Irish folklore surrounds St. Patrick's Day. Not much of it is actually substantiated. Some of this lore includes the belief that Patrick raised people from the dead. He also is said to have given a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland. Though originally a Catholic holy day, St. Patrick's Day has evolved into more of a secular holiday.

St. Patrick's Day Recipes and Crafts
Christian missionary St. Patrick is credited with converting Ireland from paganism to Christianity in the fourth century. For the Irish in Ireland, St. Patrick's Day has always been a church holiday foremost, and a feast holiday next. It was St. Patrick, according to legend, who plucked a shamrock from the earth, pointed to its three leaves, and explained its metaphor for Christianity. According to the saint, the symbol of the three-leafed shamrock exemplifies how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit can coexist as separate elements of the same entity. St. Patrick's followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on the holiday that bears his name. An idea for enhancing science is to have each child plant their own green beans. This will promote the color green and the children will love watching their beans grow. All you need is a paper cup, soil and green bean seeds. But don't forget to give them plenty of water and sunlight. A conclusion to this activity can be reading the magic story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Have Fun!

Before the kids arrive to school, make a little mess in the room. For example in your circle time area you can sprinkle glitter, turn over a chair, and torn pieces of green paper. When the kids arrive tell them that a leprechaun visited the class. Tell the kids the leprechaun left treats some where in the school and they have to help find them. Have clues posted in different areas of the school and leave the treats in a special area. Read the different clues to the kids giving them a hint where the treats may be. Once the kids have guessed all the clues that will lead them to the treats. Our class normally spray paint rocks gold and have them in a pot and we have cookies and stickers for the big treat. The kids really get excited when they see the pot of gold. Each child should get a piece of gold to take home.

93. The Holiday Zone: St. Patrick's Day Activities For English Language Learners

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back,
The sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.
An Irish blessing

Day One:
Give each student a copy of all recipes. Teach English names of various ingredients. This is best done by a class field trip to a local supermarket. If this is not feasible, a small sample of each ingredient may be brought to class.
Day Two: Review English units of measurement. Demonstrate/define cooking terminology (i.e., slice, chop, mince, add, mix, sift, stir, whip, knead, boil, bake, etc.). If at all possible, bring cooking utensils to class. Divide students into pairs. Assign each pair a recipe. One partner should read the ingredients while the other pantomimes preparing them (pointing out correct units of measurement while demonstrating proper technique). Partners should reverse roles about half way through directions. At the end of class, each student should be assigned a dish to prepare for the next day's potluck.
Day Three: Enjoy!

Q. Can you give me some ideas for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner party that uses chicken, i.e., an authentic Irish chicken dish? A. Not corned beef? Not lamb? We're speechless. Here is a recipe for a cold from Irish Traditional Cooking Canada UK ), but, in all honesty, it doesn't look like a holiday dish. If it were us, we would poach a chicken in stock and probably some wine (with a carrot, celery stalk, quartered onion and a bouquet garni of thyme, parsley, and a bay leaf), and make a sauce with the strained poaching liquid and a roux, add some cream (to us that means more than a teaspoonful) and a couple tablespoons of chopped parsley. Alongside, we would serve the lovely mashed potatoes known as champ (and which can be flavored with fried onions, chives, leeks, parsley, nettles, etc.) and perhaps glazed carrots garnished with a little fresh mint, or asparagus (which is native to the island) or peas (which are not). For dessert, you could have an apple cake or crumble (or rhubarb, if you can get it), a lemon pudding, a trifle, or any of thousands of trendy cakes incorporating Irish whiskey, which we doubt are particularly traditional but more of an excuse to consume ever-larger quantities of Irish whiskey.

    St Patrick’s Day
In a myriad of venues all over the world ordinary life comes to a complete standstill on March 17th, St Patrick’s Day. People rummage through their cupboards and wardrobes for items of emerald green. From New York to Bangkok and Boston to Tokyo, the Irish and their friends of every hue want to celebrate their Irishness.
Shops and street traders have a field day selling fancy hats, scarves, music, balloons, flats, T-shirts and badges with all kinds of witty, naughty or nutty slogans to get us into the spirit. Badges with VIP – very Irish person, RIP – real Irish person, HIP – happy Irish person…..
Mountains of beef are corned for the big day and thousands of loaves of soda bread and spotted dog are baked. The streets are painted, rivers run green, even the beer in some pubs is dyed a lurid shade to empathise with the Irish. Not that there’s any reluctance – everyone wants to be Irish on St Patrick’s day. The Irish stores do a roaring trade, Irish pubs have a jamboree, everyone is good humoured, high spirited and determined to have fun, Irish music fills the air and everyone’s toes are tapping.
