GEOGRAPHY
St. Lucia is of volcanic origin and around Soufriere in the South west, you can still see boiling bubbling mud pools escaping Sulphur and other gases. The volcanic crater is one of the islands main tourist attractions. The islands interior is wooded and mountainous, with Mount Gimmie (3118 ft) being the highest point on the island. Mountains run North to South with many rivers and streams running off them through fertile valleys running east to west. The "Twin" Pitons - "St. Lucia's Pyramids" are another spectacular landmark. They are on either side of Soufriere bay and their perspective changes as you view from different angles as you journey around them. The lush rain forests are now largely restricted to higher slopes of the mountains are only accessible by foot.
HISTORY The original settlers of the island migrated from the northeastern shores of the South American continent between 1000 and 500 B.C. These people were simple farmers and fishermen. Today, over 12 archaeological sites on the island bear witness to this ancient civilization. Remains of their culture consist primarily of domestic and ceremonial artifacts, ceramic objects and enigmatic cave drawings.

Geography
Caribbean Islands Table of Contents St. Lucia is one of many small land masses composing the insular group known as the Windward Islands. Unlike large limestone areas such as Florida, Cuba, and the Yucatan Peninsula, or the Bahamas, which is a small island group composed of coral and sand, St. Lucia is a typical Windward Island formation of volcanic rock that came into existence long after much of the region had already been formed. St. Lucia's physical features are strikingly beautiful. Dominated by high peaks and rain forests in the interior, the 616- square-kilometer island is known for the twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton on the southwestern coast, its soft sandy beaches, and its magnificent natural harbors. Mount Gimie, the highest peak, is located in the central mountain range and rises to 958 meters above sea level, a contrast that is also evident in the abrupt climatic transition from coastal to inland areas. The steep terrain also accentuates the many rivers that flow from central St. Lucia to the Caribbean. Fertile land holdings, which support banana farming, are scattered throughout the island. St. Lucia has a tropical, humid climate moderated by northeast trade winds that allow for pleasant year-round conditions. Mean annual temperatures range from 26o C to 32o C at sea level and drop to an average of 13o C in the mountain peaks. The abundant annual rainfall accumulates to approximately 200 centimeters, with most precipitation occurring during the June to December wet season. Hurricanes are the most severe climatic disturbance in this area and have been known to cause extensive damage. Although St. Lucia has historically been spared from serious hurricane destruction, Hurricane Allen decimated the agricultural sector and claimed nine lives in 1980.

Map Of St. Lucia and The Caribbean
St. Lucia lies in the eastern Caribbean Sea about 21 miles south of Martinique and 26 miles north-east of St. Vincent. It is part of the West Indian archipelago which stretches for more than 2,000 miles from Cuba southwards to the northern coast of South America.
The island is the second largest of the Windward group, which themselves are part of the Lesser Antilles, and is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, covering an area of 238sq miles and with a population of around 150,000. St. Lucia manages to house an incredibly diverse landscape into a small island. Just along the west coast you'll find breath-taking steep mountains, lush tropical forests, beautiful green hills, jagged cliffs and charming beaches. The Pitons and Volcano are the most famous sights on the island. Any time is a good time to visit St. Lucia. The high season is generally regarded as between mid-November and March, the driest months, but the island now attracts visitors by air and from cruise ships year round.
