St Lucia Wetlands: coastal jewel 15 September 2004 The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park is one of the jewels of the South African coastline. Located on the north-eastern coast of KwaZulu Natal, stretching from Kozi Bay in the north to Cape St Lucia in the south, the park was the first in South Africa to be declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). The country has a total of seven World Heritage sites. World Heritage in South Africa
Did you know that Table Mountain has more plant species than the British Isles? Or that the Drakensberg has Africa's richest concentration of rock art? SA is home to seven Unesco World Heritage sites, places of "outstanding value to humanity" The park's uniqueness lies in its remarkable diversity, particularly its combination of a subtropical coastline and a classic African game park. It is South Africa's third-largest park, spanning 280 kilometres of coastline, from the Mozambican border in the north to Mapelane south of the St Lucia estuary, and made up of around 328 000 hectares of pristine natural ecosystems – including swamps, lake systems, beaches, coral reefs, wetlands, woodlands and coastal forests.

Site Help Contact: John Emmanuel Tuesday, January 28, 2003 Addressing the packed gathering on Saturday night, at the National Cultural Centre, Minister for Social Transformation and Culture, Honourable Menissa Rambally, cited the many recipients as testimony to the tremendous potential and creative energies still waiting to be tapped among St. Lucians. Government, she pointed out, via the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) was moving in the right direction towards establishing a cultural industry where artistes of all disciplines would be provided with the enabling environment to pursue their ambitions. “We are creating a climate for artistes to aspire to earning a living if it is their desire. To explore their true potential and open doors that was once out of their reach. We have reached the stage where our artistes can no longer be taken for granted or handed less than they deserve, those days are over. St. Lucia’s culture is a viable industry and government is creating an industry that is viable, sustainable and internationally competitive and beneficial to the people of our country.” Minister Rambally said. Efforts of the CDF she noted bore much fruit and proved beneficial to cultural artistes. In 2002 a music symposium grouping all the major stakeholders was convened as part of the initial step towards the creation of a music industry.

Jazz in the South and Labowi Promotions

What began as a small community organisation has now become one of the main actors in the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival. Labowi Promotions was established twelve years ago by a small group of people from the southern village of Laborie. The group’s main objective is to promote genuine community development through arts and culture, by bringing quality cultural performances to the south of Saint Lucia and by improving the skills and visibility of local artists and performers. Ultimately, their goal is to enhance social togetherness and harmony through cultural events and expression. Since its creation, this group has organised more than 200 events and activities, in music, education, dance, drama and visual arts.
Jazz has always been an interest of Labowi Promotions. For a period of two years, between 1993 and 1994, regular “Jazz at the Village” sessions were organised at the local cinema, which brought to this small village all the great names in Saint Lucian contemporary music, including Ronald Boo Hinkson, Luther Francois, Emerson Nurse, Third Eye, Richard Payne, Ricardo Francois and Rameau Poleon. This experience gave the group some of its early credentials in organising and producing jazz events.
The group has also established an annual community festival called LabFest, as an effort to develop cultural and artistic activities in Laborie and surrounding communities, and to contribute more fully to national initiatives in the field of cultural development. This Festival is now being held each year over a period of one month, beginning in late November with St. Cecilia, the Feast of Musicians, and ending shortly before Christmas. This Festival is quickly becoming one of the key dates on Saint Lucia’s cultural calendar.

Living on the estate grounds, interns will continue their orientation, learning the local craft of making coconut oil and roasting cashews, receiving Creole language instruction, learning to play cricket and learning in depth about St. Lucian culture and history through visits to nearby villag es and naturalist-led hikes through the rainforest. During this period of training, interns will also work with their in-country director on setting educational goals, planning lessons and developing teaching strategies and techniques for the classroom. In addition to learning about the specifics of the communities in which you will be placed, interns will also have lectures on health, safety and cultural sensitivity.

The Cultural Imperative for St. Lucia Part I Before delving into this weekís article, I would like to take the time to thank all of you who have given me both positive and constructive feedback on the column. I especially want to thank my friend Renee, who have prodded me on from the very first article. Many times, I have said to myself, . No sooner I have made the decision to stop, I am reminded of my communal responsibility. So thanks again for your support. I would like to begin by first offering a definition of culture. Culture can be defined as the sum total of the way of life of a people, with that way of life reflecting their world-view and their collective emotional tone or ethos . World-view relates to how a people make sense of the environment with which they interact and of their experiences within that environment. It allows them to discern what is of value and what is not. Ethos relates to emotional and behavioral patterns in response to stimuli within oneís world. Culture is influenced by oneís historical experiences, and culture in turn, influences the creation of new history. So history and culture are in fact inseparable. Additionally, culture includes the symbols, motifs, institutions, ideologies, values, beliefs, and the traditions and rituals of a people. It is worth noting that every individual participates in a cultural system, whether at the conscious level or not. The ultimate question is, what is this cultural system? The cultural imperative for St. Lucia is to attempt to answer that question. What is the cultural system that informs the world-view and emotional tone of St. Lucians? It is by answering the question of culture that we may develop a more profound understanding of how St. Lucians participate in and interact with their social, religious, political, and economic systems. I was at a Catholic Baptism some two weeks ago. The ritual was quite sedate, with no reference to our ancestors, the spirit world, or the role of new birth in the cycle of African life. Music or celebrations, was clearly not central to the ritual, and color was absent. It would appear, that I was not the only one in the room who could not find grounding in this ritual. It dawned on me that this Euro-stylized ritual was totally alien to our ethos.

    The Festival of Light
On December 13 th one of the most traditional Scandinavian festivities is celebrated all over Sweden, Norway and on the Swedish speaking parts of Finland. It is Lucia's day, the festival of light, celebrated in memory of the Italian Santa Lucia.
In the early hours of the morning a young woman, dressed in white and wearing a crown of blazing candles, brings light into the dark winter at homes, hospitals, schools and offices, serving steaming coffee with ginger biscuits and saffronbread for everybody. There are Lucia processions everywhere and every village elects its own Lucia. The 'Lucia Queen' leads the processions mostly consisting of a group of young girls and boys singing traditional carols. Lucia's day symbolically opens the Christmas celebrations in Scandinavia, bringing hope and light during the darkest months of the year. Santa Lucia of Sicily and the winter solstice festival The original Lucia was a young Christian girl from the town of Syracuse, on the Italian island of Sicily. She was beheaded by sword on the 13
