Travel By Fingertip ...St. Lucia P oints of I nterest In S t. L ucia Castries One of the busiest port cities in the Caribbean and home to about 60,000 people. Although Castries has been, over the years, victimized by fires and hurricanes, much of the earthy beauty of its 19th Century colonial buildings and streets remain. Of particular historic interest is the area around Columbus Square and Brazil Street. Marquis Plantation: We enjoyed a wonderful trip to this working banana factory. Be prepared for a bit of mud on the shoes - as well as an interesting experience. Addr: St. Lucia Plantation Tours Ph: 442-3762. Marigot Bay History has it that in 1778, British Admiral Barrington hid his ships from the French in this secluded Bay, and saved them from destruction. Now a fun spot for yachting, swimming and socializing. Addr: South of Castries. Fort Charlotte Changing numerous times between French and British hands, this historic Fort situated on "The Hill of Good Fortune" is a burial ground for several of St. Lucia's past governors. Addr: East of Castries.

LUCIA An unusual dichotomy of British and French culture has shaped the course of St. Lucia's history and present. St. Lucia's political culture is patterned after British models and English remains the language of status, but French patois is spoken by 90% of the population. Boasting one of the most diverse economies in the Caribbean, St. Lucia—though still an agricultural economy based on banana production—manufacturing, construction, tourism, and modest mineral wealth combine to form a relatively solid economy. Sever drought affecting banana production and inattentiveness by the United States have rained on St. Lucia's economic parade. Emigration has also had adverse effects on St. Lucia as islanders leave in search of work.

GREAT DEALS From Fodors.com Which Island for You?
Which Island for You? A Sampling of Island Culture
The Caribbean population is a rich gumbo of nationalities, including Americans and Canadians who have retired to and invested in the islands. Little remains of the indigenous populations (there are Carib communities on Dominica and St. Vincent, as well as tantalizing, if sparse, archaeological remains), and many other groups have left their cultural imprint on the Caribbean. Nowhere is African culture more noticeable than in island music. Calypso was born in Trinidad, and its catchy rhythms veil the barbed working-class satire of many of the lyrics. The island is also the stomping ground of a flat-out, freewheeling Carnival that rivals the pre-Lenten celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. Jamaica is the home of reggae, the Rastafarian sound that has racial, political, and religious undertones. The wild, pulsating merengue, born in the Dominican Republic, is danced exuberantly everywhere on the island.

Zoop Zoop Zoop
Traditional Music and Folklore of St Croix, St Thomas and St John - Various performers New World Records 80427 - 2 The commercial category 'World Music' may not have been intended as a liberal euphemism for 'foreign' music. Inevitably, perhaps, that is what it soon became, as if white English-speaking musicians were somehow not in the world. Fascination with the novel and alien has passed for cultural investigation for as long as some people have sought an alternative to whatever the commercial entertainment industry had to offer. But the point of 'a wider perspective on traditional music' is surely not to wallow in the exotic for its own sake, but to appreciate what popular musics around the world have in common. The latter approach - true eclecticism as opposed to culture collecting - has had some encouragement during the past two decades. This is not due to the self-conscious 'fusions' indulged in by bored musicians, but to the musical miscegenation that arises naturally out of historical reality; or rather, to the long overdue recognition of that process, and of the fact that any music that has ever been popular enough to become traditional is likely to be a product of it. 'Purism' has long been a term of abuse, mainly because it has been taken to denote excess, a purely relative matter of over-enthusiasm. Now it is increasingly acknowledged that concepts like 'pure' and 'authentic' have little useful application. It seems obvious, once uttered, that the notion of a 'true folk artist', reliably representative of his / her community alone, has been a nostalgic one, at least since the spread of the domestic phonograph and wireless.

    History
Arawak Amerindians first settled on the island in the 3rd century AD, while the Caribs later took over. European discovery of the island is somewhat vague, but it was probably discovered around 1500 by the Spanish explorer Juan de la Cosa. After some early failed attempts to settle there, the French and British fought over the island, with its fine natural harbor at Castries, during the 17th and 18th centuries (changing possession 14 times), until Britain finally obtained control in 1814. The island was a province of the short-lived West Indies Federation from 1958 to 1962. The island was granted self-government in 1967 and independence in February 22, 1979.
