European discovery of the island is somewhat vague, but it was probably discovered around 1500 by the Spanish explorer Juan de la Cosa . One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). By Corinne Mah
In March 2001 I stopped briefly in St. Lucia to spend a few days relaxing after Carnival in Trinidad. My short visit did not provide enough time to even scratch its surface, yet I found myself captivated by the qualities of this 238-square-mile Windward Island. The sun, the sea, the island's natural beauty, as well as the warmth of its people, all left me wanting to return to St. Lucia. A Special Day in Paradise History Sights St. Lucia hosts a full range of lodging options, from the luxury of all-inclusive hotels like Sandals, the Rex St. Lucian, Wyndham Morgan Bay, and the Hyatt, to moderate hotels like the Bay Gardens or the Rainbow Hotel, to even more intimate properties like Auberge Seraphine in Castries, the Hummingbird Resort in Soufriere, or the lovely Candyo Inn, where I stayed in Rodney Bay. My charming room was decorated with bunches of fresh bougainvillea, and the helpful staff made my visit a pleasure. More properties are under construction, including a 300-room Radisson Hotel in Rodney Bay scheduled to open by 2002, and the exquisite Ti Kaye Resort, comprised of 33 private cliff-hugging bungalows overlooking Anse Cochon on the west coast, scheduled to open early 2001. There is entertainment throughout the week, but during the weekend, things really heat up. Two competing street festivals happen on Friday nights: the Jump Up in Gros Islet, where the streets close down and locals and tourists eat, drink and dance all night, and the Anse la Raye Fish Fry, where a huge variety of fresh-caught fish is served a multitude of ways, and the feast segues into a full night of entertainment. Resorts, restaurants, bars, clubs and discos all offer a full spectrum of entertainment as well.

INTRODUCTION:
This annual transatlantic rally starting each November in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has now become the most popular way to cross the Atlantic. The largest transocean sailing event in the world, every year the ARC brings together over 150 yachts from all over the world. The Caribbean destination is Rodney Bay in St.Lucia, one of the most beautiful islands in the Lesser Antilles. The 2700 nautical mile passage on the NE tradewind route takes on average between 12 and 24 days. The ARC is open to cruising monohulls from 8.23m to 25.91m (27-85ft) LOA and cruising catamarrans from 8.23 - 18.29m (27ft to 60ft) LOA, with a minimum crew of two. The World Cruising handicap is used to calculate results in the cruising classes, in which motoring is permitted. A racing class, rated under the IRC System , is run for those wanting more a competitive crossing, under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club. Yachts in this class may be sponsored. Motor yachts can also participate in the ARC in a separate division. Conceived as a friendly race for cruising yachts to make the Atlantic crossing both safer and more enjoyable, participating yachts must carry a range of safety equipment including a liferaft, EPIRB and VHF radio. Daily radio nets contribute further to the safety of participants. The presence of experienced sailors is another incentive for those with little offshore experience.

Did anybody knows when the colours was officially changed (22.02.2002(?)) ? " Falko Schmidt , 15 April 2002 Did you notice that in the quoted website the flag behind the photo of St Lucia Prime Minister is still dark blue ? Armand Noel du Payrat , 17 April 2002 Note that the present PM is in office since 1997 so that his photo maight be quite old. It's interesting that both image and description are compatible - they both describe the flag as "cerulean". Jan Zrzavy , 17 April 2002 The most intriguing fact is that the flag description says cerulean (sky) blue since its design, but has always been render a darker blue. I have been in St. Lucia, but many years ago, and it was a darker blue then.

Contact: John Emmanuel Tuesday, May 14, 2002 - Directors of Culture of CARICOM States have begun meeting to discuss various policies and programmes affecting the growth and development of culture in the Caribbean. The two-day meeting that ends here today May 15, 2002 is also receiving reports from cultural based organizations such as CARIFORUM and UNESCO. Of special significance to the annual Regional Cultural Committee (RCC) meeting now into its 13th year, are issues of cultural industry and diversity, cultural relations with neighbouring Cuba and participation in international cultural programmes. Delegates are also seeking to strike a balance by means of improving administration and efficiency in handling matters relating to culture, while at the same time reducing the levels of bureaucratic red tape. Executive Director of the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) Teddy Francis said, “we need to balance and find that happy medium in trying to perfect our national festivals by ensuring that we have our best Carnival and Corp Over, but while doing that we need to avoid at any point being insular and ensuring that it remains healthy competition and not trying to go to the extremes of nationalism.” The forging of the Caribbean nest Mr Francis said must be central to our themes though we try through our national festival to engender that national pride. “We speak so often now of cultural industry and making culture and cultural works a viable economic product. However we too must not go to far even in this area avoiding the danger of making it too commercialised and loosing our authenticity,” he exclaimed.

“Benefits beyond boundaries” for Greater St Lucia Wetland Park
From 4 to 7 September 2003, the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park Authority (GSLWPA) organized a workshop at the World Parks Congress in Durban, to take stock of development, environmental and governance concerns and efforts to stimulate local development through tourism.
Established in 2000, the GSLWPA is made up of representatives of government, civil society and local communities. Their workshop brought together protected area managers, scientists and representatives from local communities. The meeting was a unique opportunity for social and natural scientists to jointly explore the challenges facing integrated conservation and development in the St Lucia World Heritage site and to engage in a dialogue with community representatives involved in such sustainable development programmes. To launch the GSLWPA’s new “stocking program”, the meeting was followed by the release of 2 Cheetah into the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park (GSLWP). The Cheetah had disappeared from the St. Lucia area around 100 years ago.

Society St. Lucia may be described in terms of its size (twenty seven by fourteen miles), its approximate population (160,000), its climate (tropical), or its main sources of income (banana production, tourism, light manufacturing) - but what do such descriptions mean to those of us who were born and raised here? Or to those of us who now live overseas? It doesn't stir up memories of the exhilaration felt when going up river with a gang of other kids to slide down the waterfalls, crying 'Whiiiiee Sallee!' all the way down. It doesn't convey anything of the all-familiar sight of school children, barefoot with their uniforms dishevelled, pelting stones into fruit-laden mango trees and later, bellies full, pulling the stringy bits from between their teeth with their shirtsleeves. And what does dry, quantitative information teach those of us who intend to visit the island for the first time, hoping for a relaxed get-away on a soft, sandy beach, or a romantic time in a smoothly-run hotel? Lets try to keep those smells, sights and sounds in mind, and remember that they are what really make up the culture and people of St. Lucia – as we take ourselves on a concise tour of the island's history, its political make-up and social structure. th and 18 th centuries.
