Tel: (246) 426-5373  Fax: 429-8483 History In the 1960s at a time when the impact of development activities on Caribbean environments was beginning to be visible, intrusive and troublesome, a number of groups and individuals concerned with the conservation of the region's natural resources and cultural heritage, conceived the idea for the formation of a conservation group for the Caribbean region. With support from Laurence Rockefeller, who in the 1950's had purchased two-thirds of St. John (to the US Virgin Islands) and donated it for establishment of a National Park, a regional survey on conservation problems was carried out by Dr Carl Carlozzi of the University of Massachusetts. One of the first organizations to take concrete action to address on a regional basis the environmental problems brought by development, was the research wing of the then College of the Virgin Islands the Caribbean Research Institute. Established in October 1965, one of the CRI's first significant projects was the joint sponsorship of the Eastern Caribbean Conservation Conference on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands along with the American Conservation Association, headed by Mr Rockefeller, and the Government of the U.S.V.I. The conference focused on the Carlozzi findings and was titled "Conservation in the Eastern Caribbean." It generated a sequence of activities throughout the region relating to conservation programmes and environmental activities. Particularly it recognized the need for international planning and cooperation in meeting the conservation requirements of the region and concluded its deliberations by recommending the establishment of a regional body to help meet these needs.

Caribbean History St Kitts, settled by Sir Thomas Warner in 1623, was the site of the first British colony in the West Indies. The following year the French also settled part of St Kitts, a situation Warner tolerated in part to gain an upper hand against the native Caribs living on the island. After they massacred the Caribs in a series of battles, the British and French turned on each other and St Kitts changed hands between the two several times before the 1783 Treaty of Paris brought the island firmly under British control. Sugar plantations thrived on St Kitts during this era. Nevis has a similar history. In 1628 Sir Warner sent a party of about 100 colonists to establish a British settlement on the western coast. Although their original settlement, near Cotton Ground, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1680, Nevis went on to prosper, developing one of the most affluent plantation societies in the Eastern Caribbean. As on St Kitts, most of the island's wealth was built upon the labor of African slaves toiling in the island's sugar cane fields. The local tourist industry got its start in the late 18th century on Nevis, where thermal baths made it a popular retreat for Britain's elite. In 1816, the British linked St Kitts and Nevis with Anguilla and the Virgin Islands as a single colony. In 1958 these islands became part of the West Indies Federation, a grand but unsuccessful attempt to combine all of Britain's Caribbean colonies into a united political entity. Search HISTORY OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY The end of the Federation meant the beginning of more serious efforts on the part of the political leaders in the Caribbean to strengthen the ties between the islands and mainland by providing for the continuance and strengthening of the areas of cooperation that existed during the Federation. To this end in mid-1962 a Common Services Conference was called to take decisions on these services, the major ones among them being the University of the West Indies (UWI), founded in 1948 and the Regional Shipping Services set up during the Federation to control the operation of the two ships donated in 1962 by the government of Canada - the Federal Palm and the Federal Maple. The Caribbean Meteorological Service was established one year after, in 1963 and along with the UWI and the Regional Shipping Service, represented the heart of Caribbean cooperation directly after the end of the Federation.

In fact, the bank established branches in the Caribbean before some of Canada's western provinces. Strong maritime roots influenced its representation throughout the region. Its commercial relations began with a group of merchants from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who formed the Merchant's Bank in 1864, and were engaged in the thriving sea-going trade between Halifax and the West Indies. In those days Canadian southbound ships carried mainly flour, codfish and timber, returning north with their cargoes of sugar, rum, cotton and spices. Early days The bank's first venture south was Bermuda in 1882 followed by Cuba in 1899. Charles, 1671 Pre-Columbian History - The first inhabitants of Nevis were almost certainly pre-ceramic Indians called Sibonay. Most scientists believe that at the height of the Indian population, about 600 AD that there were between 2,500 to 6,000 Indians on Nevis. Western History of Nevis - Christopher Columbus, while on his second voyage, was the first western person to lay eyes on Nevis. While anchoring off Nevis on November 11, 1493, Columbus mistakenly thought that the cloud cover that often shrouds Nevis' peak, was snow. The Spanish word for snow is "Nieves", hence today's corrupt form of the word, Nevis. Not long after this, the name appeared on many of the days sailing maps, as a result of this, the name remains with us today. Strangely enough Columbus never ventured ashore.
