The largest lakes are Victoria (the world's second largest freshwater lake), Tanganyika, Albert, Turkana, and Nyasa (or Malawi), all in E Africa; shallow Lake Chad, the largest in W Africa, shrinks considerably during dry periods. The lakes and major rivers (most of which are navigable in stretches above the escarpment of the plateau) form an important inland transportation system.

DID YOU KNOW? Education is based broadly on the British system and curriculum. All children attend school between the ages of five and fifteen. The island operates a three-tier system with students progressing from First Schools to Middle Schools and then onto the Community High School, Prince Andrew.
St Helena is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean , 5° 43' west and 15° 56' south, 1,200 miles (1,950km) from the south-west coast of Africa, and 1,800 miles (2,900km) from the coast of South America. The nearest land is Ascension Island, which lies 703 miles (1,125km) to the north-west.
ZOOM - MAP Endemic species, such as the Wirebird , are highly protected and a birdwatchers delight. Today, the visitor to St Helena is surprised by the varied vegetation zones within short distances. On the higher grounds of the island there is an abundance of lush semi-tropical vegetation. This changes to grasslands and pastures and finally arid terrain as one moves down to the coast. The highest point on St Helena is Diana's Peak at 2685 ft or 818m.

The lakes and major rivers (most of which are navigable in stretches above the escarpment of the plateau) form an important inland transportation system. Geologically, recent major earth disturbances have been confined to areas of NW and E Africa. Geologists have long noted the excellent fit (in shape and geology) between the coast of Africa at the Gulf of Guinea and the Brazilian coast of South America, and they have evidence that Africa formed the center of a large ancestral supercontinent known as Pangaea. Pangaea began to break apart in the Jurassic period to form Gondwanaland, which included Africa, the other southern continents, and India. South America was separated from Africa c.76 million years ago, when the floor of the S Atlantic Ocean was opened up by seafloor spreading; Madagascar was separated from it c.65 million years ago; and Arabia was separated from it c.20 million years ago, when the Red Sea was formed. There is also evidence of one-time connections between NW Africa and E North America, N Africa and Europe, Madagascar and India, and SE Africa and Antarctica.

    AFRICA
... LINKS African geography Relief: Africa is bounded N by the Mediterranean Sea, W by the Atlantic Ocean, and E by the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Its greatest length from N to S is 8,000 km/5,000 mi and its breadth from Cape Verde to Ras Hafun is 7,440 km/4,623 mi. Its area, including Madagascar and the other adjacent islands, is 30,097,000 sq km/11,620,451 sq mi, or three times that of Europe. The coastline is regular, with no deep seas, bays, or river estuaries of any size to afford climatic or commercial advantages; so that in proportion to its size Africa has less coastline than any other continent, its total length being about 25,600 km/15,900 mi. Mountains: The mountains of Africa may be divided into three distinct systems: (1) the Atlas; (2) the west coast; and (3) the east coast. The Atlas Mountains occupy the northern portion between the sea and the Sahara, from Wadi Daa to Cape Bon. The eastern Atlas , 1,830-2,440 m/6,000-8,000 ft high, consist of two parallel ranges enclosing a plateau where salt lakes called chotts are found. The western Atlas , known as the Great Atlas of Morocco, have an average elevation of 3,050 m/10,000 ft, and the highest peaks are over 4,275 m/14,025 ft.

St Helena is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean, 5°43’ west and 15°56’ south, 1.200 miles (1.950 km) from the south-west coast of Africa and 1.800 miles (2.900 km) from the coast of South America. The nearest land is Ascension Island, which lies 703 miles (1.125 km) in the north-west. The island is 47 square miles (122 square km), ten and a half miles (17 km) long and six and a half miles (10 km) wide, consisting of steep, rocky terrain. Rising dramatically from the South Atlantic, the island has sheer barren cliffs intersected with deep valleys (locally known as guts) which slope steeply from the central ridges. There is little flat land and the island has no sandy beaches. The highest point on St Helena is Diana’s Peak (2.685ft, 818m.) On the higher central ground bush and semi-tropical vegetation is abundant. This changes to grassland and pastures before the terrain becomes drier and almost barren below an altitude of 1.600ft (500m). The only inland waters are small mountain streams, which occasionally dry up in the summer months The population of St. Helena is 5.000, mainly descendants of British settlers and east India Company employees and slaves from South Asian sub-Continent, the East Indies and Madagascar as well as Chinese indentured laborers.
