Preliminary version, May 2005
I welcome comments from knowledgeable readers. Should you have a suggested correction, please specify the source of your information. I am most interested in information from primary sources, particularly laws and the reports of monetary authorities.
Notes So far the tables for Africa, Asia, and Australia/Pacific are finished, though they are subject to revision. "Present" refers to 2005 in the tables of monetary authorities.
Table. African countries that have had various types of monetary authorities Systems with competitive issue of the monetary base Free bankingCompetitive issue by banks of notes (paper money) and deposits with few special regulations. Fixed exchange rate with gold, silver, or a foreign currency. Lesotho (1902-21), Malawi (1894-1940), Mauritius (1813-17, 1817-24*, 1824-5, 1832-49), Namibia (1915-61), South Africa (1837-1920, 1920-1*), Swaziland (1897-1921), Zambia (1906-40), Zimbabwe (1892-1940). Besides these episodes, there was also limited competition in Mozambique (1919-42*). Botswana (1897) and Nigeria (sometime 1899-1912) had episodes of note issue by a single bank either too brief or not extensive enough to usefully classify as free banking. Free issueUnusual system with neither an exchange rate target nor centralized control of the monetary base.

History of the WHO South-East Asia Region
Before the Second World War, the term "South-East Asia" was scarcely a geographic expression and was rarely used. The region of the peninsula between India and China was included in the term "Far East". Some authors called the region "Further India". During the Second World War, the Japanese Army used the term "Greater East Asia" to include countries of South-East Asia.
The term "South-East Asia" is credited to the Indian historian K.M. Pannikar who used it in the title of his book "Future of Southeast Asia" published in 1943. Due to military and strategic considerations during the Second World War, the region came to be regarded as a separate geographic entity and the Allied Supreme Command adopted the term "South-East Asia". By the end of the war, the term was well established and was used as a collective for the peninsula between India and China. The countries include Brunei, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Some organizations include the Phillipines in South-East Asia.
Countries in and adjacent to the Indian subcontinent, namely, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives are considered as belonging to "South Asia".

Project Profile
The goal of the project is to contribute toward a stable and pluralistic democracy by helping to strengthen democratically-based community and regional planning in Sri Lanka. To this end, the project involves:
  • establishing academic degree programs in community and regional planning in three Sri Lankan universities: University of Peradeniya (graduate level), University of Ruhuna (undergraduate level), and University of Jaffna (undergraduate level) carrying out short-term training/colloquium programs for practicing Sri Lankan planners at the regional, provincial, city, district, divisional and local community levels offering graduate fellowships to Sri Lankan faculty members to study community and regional planning at UBC carrying out pilot project case studies on community and regional planning in Sri Lanka.
This project, which commenced on 10 June 1997, is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) under the Tier 2 program. The project is supported under the University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development Program of CIDA over five years. It is executed by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). The project partners are the University of British Columbia on the Canadian side, and the Sri Lankan partners are the University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, and University of Jaffna.

Melanesia , and Polynesia In mainland Southeast Asia, courtly and urban centers flourish in prosperous regional kingdoms, such as that of Ayudhya in Thailand. Conflicting relationships between these polities often lead to changing boundaries. Development of these centers is linked in part to the growing importance of trade in the region. Theravada Buddhism flourishes in Burma and Thailand due to royal patronage and direct contact with monasteries in Sri Lanka; sculptures and paintings, often depicting the Historical Buddha Shakyamuni, are produced in some number. Christianity plays an important role in the Philippines, with Chinese craftsmen producing religious images for the European and South American markets Islam continues to flourish in island Southeast Asia and peninsular Thailand and Malaysia. Textiles , produced in a variety of regional centers, are traded throughout the region, and to South Asia and Europe. Ceramics, produced in Vietnam and Thailand, continue to play an important role in regional transmarine commerce. The period from 1600 to 1800 is one of increasing interaction between European traders and trade goods, and the indigenous arts and cultures of the Southeast Asian archipelagos. A central force in these interactions is the Dutch East India Company, which seizes control of the lucrative spice trade from earlier Portuguese and English traders and holds a virtual monopoly on

The Cholas, historically known as early as the third century B.C., emerge as imperial contenders in the ninth century to dominate the south and remain prominent for around four centuries. Significant expansion to the north is blocked by Western Chalukya dominance of the Deccan, but the Cholas conquer Sri Lanka at the turn of the millennium and seriously weaken the Shrivijaya empire in Southeast Asia. The Brihadeshvara Temple is built in Thanjavur (Tanjore) by Chola ruler Rajaraja ("king of kings"). Significantly larger and more elaborate than previous temples, the Brihadeshvara paves the way for future elaborations and expansions of temple design. South Indian temples from this period onward grow into large complexes composed of various elements, including a main temple, gateways, and subsidiary structures (such as smaller shrines, water tanks, and halls). Metal sculptures produced in the Chola kingdom are considered by art historians to be among the finest works of art in the world. Most images depict deities from the Shaiva and Vaishnava pantheons. Representations of Shiva as Nataraja or "Lord of Dance" are among the best known examples of the type.

Sri Lanka SRI LANKA'S HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE covers more than 2,000 years. Islamic folklore maintains that Adam and Eve were offered refuge on the island as solace for their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Sri Lanka claims a democratic tradition matched by few other developing countries, and since its independence in 1948, successive governments have been freely elected. Sri Lanka's citizens enjoy a long life expectancy, advanced health standards, and one of the highest literacy rates in the world despite the fact that the country has one of the lowest per capita incomes. In the years since independence, Sri Lanka has experienced severe communal clashes between its Buddhist Sinhalese majority approximately 74 percent of the populationand the country's largest minority group, the Sri Lankan Tamils, who are Hindus and comprise nearly 13 percent of the population. The communal violence that attracted the harsh scrutiny of the international media in the late 1980s can best be understood in the context of the island's complex historical developmentits ancient and intricate relationship to India's civilization and its more than four centuries under colonial rule by European powers.
