An island country in the Indian Ocean off southeast India. Inhabited originally by the Vedda, the island was later invaded by the Singhalese (6th century B.C. ) and the Tamil (11th and 12th centuries A.D. ). The lucrative spice trade on the island was controlled successively by Arab, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders from the 12th century. It became a British colony in 1798 and achieved independence in 1948. In 1972 the island was declared a republic, and it adopted the Singhalese name of Sri Lanka. In Puttlam District in Sri Lanka (130 km north of Colombo) mangrove area was reduced from 3650 ha in 1983 to about 2000 ha in 1994. The loss was "mainly for prawn farming". In general "exploitation of Sri Lankan mangrove resources has occurred for last few decades and it is significantly high in the last few years with the rapid expansion of prawn farming."
Mangroves serve many important functions, including filtering sediments which may otherwise smother reefs, providing habitat for juvenile fish, lobster, crocodiles and sea birds and protecting shorelines from erosion.

Research within Human Geography has traditionally been centred around physical and regional planning in Sweden, but there is also a long tradition of studies within development geography, particularly in Africa.

Regional Development in an Open Economy. A Comparative Study of Hambantota and Gampaha Districts, Sri Lanka
Contact Person in Sweden: PhD Candidate Jonas Lindberg
Contact Persons in Sri Lanka: Professor Kamal Karunanayake ; and Professor Nimal Dangalle , University of Kelaniya Description of the Project The regional development pattern is initially illustrated quantitatively with GIS. This involves a comparison at the national level, between different districts, a specific comparison between the districts of Hambantota and Gampaha, as well as internal variations within these districts. From a quantitative picture, the researchers probe further into what is actually influencing the regional development pattern with a more qualitative approach, where they also go deeper into the regions to discuss current trends with planners and other professionals at the central and district levels, as well as finding out perceptions of development at the local level, through in-depth interviews.
