Ethnic Groups
Sri Lanka Table of Contents The people of Sri Lanka are divided into ethnic groups whose conflicts have dominated public life since the nineteenth century. The two main characteristics that mark a person's ethnic heritage are language and religion, which intersect to create four major ethnic groupsthe Sinhalese, the Tamils, the Muslims, and the Burghers. Ethnic divisions are not based on race or physical appearance; some Sri Lankans claim to determine the ethnicity of a person by his facial characteristics or color, but in reality such premises are not provable. There is nothing in the languages or religious systems in Sri Lanka that officially promotes the social segregation of their adherents, but historical circumstances have favored one or more of the groups at different times, leading to hostility and competition for political and economic power.
Sinhalese
The Buddhist religion reinforces the solidarity of the Sinhalese as an ethnic community. In 1988 approximately 93 percent of the Sinhala speakers were Buddhists, and 99.5 percent of the Buddhists in Sri Lanka spoke Sinhala. The most popular Sinhalese folklore, literature, and rituals teach children from an early age the uniqueness of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, the long relationship between Buddhism and the culture and politics of the island, and the importance of preserving this fragile cultural inheritance. Buddhist monks are accorded great respect and participate in services at the notable events in people's lives. To become a monk is a highly valued career goal for many young men. The neighboring Buddhist monastery or shrine is the center of cultural life for Sinhalese villagers.

Art of Sri Lanka
Literature
Sri Lanka did not have a fertile ground for the growth of vernacular literature particularly because of the conservative Buddhist tradition coupled with the fierce political repression which followed the leftist revolts of 1971 and 1987-88 and the ethnic troubles of the 1980s and 1990s. But still she has her share of home spun literary talent. The best known of its authors, perhaps, is Michael Ondaatje, who wrote the much acclaimed novel The English Patient, also a popular screen picture.
Music and Dance
Kandyan Dance:

Music and dance in Sri Lanka are still closely intertwined with religious rituals. Kandyan or 'high country' dance which is accompanied by the complex rhythms of several drummers has evolved from village dances performed to appease to local deities. The percussion instrument used is a wooden drum with leather heads of monkey skin at one end and cowhide at the other. Two different types of skins make room for contrasting tones. Dancers, usually women, go through a routine of sinuous poses and flowing arm movements.
Devil- mask Dance: 'Low country' or 'devil-mask' dancing is generally performed with the motive of exorcism. These are also accompanied by drummers, who use a special 'demon drum' to enhance the steps and movements of dancers wearing the grotesque masks representing the 18 demons of disease.

British Visa I am now ushered to the MI 5 unit and for the first time, I see a lady who, I can vouch, is a British citizen and I got a feeling that you cannot trust anyone else to get your finger printed. Sri Lankans have always given a helping hand to fellowmen and they would have easily given a hand for a small fee. So you cannot trust anyone else other that a Brit to get sensitive information. I was asked to wait till the Lord exchequer called me to pay the fees. There is no place which says the amount you have to pay. So applicants in future please take your cash in notes of Rs. 1000, 100, 10, and coins for cents 50, 25 to avoid having to beg for change. I was asked to come the next day at 4 p.m. for a "situation position." I went the next day sharp at 4 and there were hundreds. Nobody other than the Hon. Speaker at the gate knew the procedure. From under a tree, he kept calling about a dozen of names. They were ushered in. Another lot was called and then another. Finally the balance was sent in and we had to wait until our names were called. It is like waiting for your exam results. My name was called and I was handed over a huge white envelope. I went out and opened and found only my passport but what happened to my original documents like the original bank statements and other documents, etc. Anyway the consolation was that I had got a visa - Hurrah for now.'

Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) Chairman, Mr. Udaya Nanayakkara, said that a major international festival of this kind needs to be held in a climate of total recovery: “ For the Festival of Drums to be a true bounce back celebration, we need to ensure that we are showing our best face to the world again – with the guarantee to provide the unique style of Sri Lankan hospitality we are famous for.” “And, as this is the inaugural WOMAD Sri Lanka Festival of Drums, it is even more important that we are fully recovered. This is primarily why we have decided to present the Festival on the later dates of 21 - 25 September

An article giving an overview about traveling in Sri Lanka, how to get there and some best places to visit.
The sites and sounds of Srilanka are enchanting. Its many island destinations offer golden sandy beaches, hilly retreats and forests in a tasteful blend of history, colours and culture. One such place is Dambulla where Adventure Travel and Ecotourism Conference was held in February 2001 which hosted professionals from the industry with expertise in ecological and adventure segments of tourism. The main attraction there is the ancient rock temple that has been standing there since 100 BC and its caves, where the exiled kind from Anuradphapura took refuge. Located amidst lush forests and on the shores of the Kandalama tank (a seasonal lake) is Kandalama Hotel. This Eco-friendly venue has been the first recipient of the Green Globe Certification. On the other side of the lake is the bird-friendly culture club. Here at the club, tastefully laid out trees along the detached cottages attach birds right onto the doorway of the cottages. Of the 435 recorded bird species, at least 23 are native of the island and the area round the culture club is home to many. Beside bird watching, one has the facility to go elephant trekking, horse riding, canoeing and mountain biking. Guided tours are also available to see the flora and fauna of the area, specially of the dry zone of Srilanka (the area around the culture club).
