E-Mail This Article Published on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 in the San Francisco Chronicle Ethnic Tensions Swirl Around Those of Indian Descent in Sri Lanka and Fiji by Ranjan Gupta THE CIVIL WAR in Sri Lanka and the coup in Fiji have linked the Indian Ocean and the Pacific in a massive anti-Indian sweep. In political terms, of course, the Tamils of Sri Lanka are Sri Lankans and the Indians of Fiji are Fijians. But if that were truly so, there would be no battles. The Indian identity, linked in core terms around religion and culture, is at the center of the conflict. On a recent visit to Colombo, Sri Lanka, a taxi driver asked me where I was from. India? Where? Bengal, Calcutta, yes, but are you Hindu? The answer Hindu immediately put me in the enemy camp. The driver did not speak to me again. In its most stark terms, the fight in northern Sri Lanka is a fight between Tamil culture and Sinhalese culture, cultures whose principal difference is religion. The Tamils are Hindus and the Sinhalese are Buddhists. This puts India in a dilemma should it back Sri Lanka's government because it is a friendly neighbor, or support the separatist rebel Tamils, who have ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic links with one of India's southern states, Tamil Nadu? Such links cannot be discounted by saying they are with but one region of India. Any segment is part of the whole of India. To choose not to support the Tamils in Sri Lanka because Tamils are only one ethnic group in India, and predominant in only one state, is to alienate one's own population and invite secession.

Stanford Report, March 9, 2005 'A deep spirituality and subtlety' inhabit Sri Lankan art, exhibit curator says
BY BARBARA PALMER Courtesy of Cantor Arts Center
Two decades ago, John Listopad, curator for Asian art at the Cantor Arts Center, spent several months traveling and doing fieldwork in Sri Lanka, in search of influences on the development of Thai art, his specialty. Listopad left the island with a stock of adventure stories (he once was charged by an elephant while taking a shortcut through a rubber plantation on his motorcycle) and an enduring interest in Sri Lanka's Buddhist art. The art has "has solemnity, a deep spirituality and subtlety—and humor," said the curator, who wrote essays for the catalog that accompanies the newly opened exhibit, Guardian of the Flame: The Art of Sri Lanka, on display at the Cantor Arts Center through June 12. The exhibit, which contains dozens of Buddha images dating from the 5th to 6th centuries through the 19th century and examples of reliquaries spanning 10 centuries, was organized by the Phoenix Museum of Art. The exhibit also contains rare palm-leaf manuscripts and manuscript covers from a private collection and is the first major exhibition in the United States to present the entire history of Sri Lankan art. Included among the stone and bronze Buddha images are—as Listopad describes them in the understated manner of art curators—"a number of extremely fine" pieces, like a 2-foot-tall solid-bronze Buddha from the 18th-century highlands kingdom of Kandy and a 15th-century Buddha so exquisitely wrought it is almost certain to have been commissioned by royalty.

Monuments at the Malwatta Vihara Complex, Kandy
Kandy, inscribed on the World Heritage List , is remarkable for its beautiful natural setting and its palace buildings, shrines and British period buildings, which lend it a distinctive character. Mainly of single-storey construction in wood, brick and stucco with graceful overhanging tiled roofs in the distinctive Kandy style, most of these buildings date from the time of the Sinhara kings.
Through continuous occupation of these buildings, many inappropriate additions and alterations had been carried out by the occupants. CCF, the national institution in charge, has performed conservation work on one of the wings of the Alms Hall and five temples. The objective of the UNESCO/Japan Trust Fund project was to preserve fourteen piests' dwellings and four other religious structures. Thus, measured drawings were prepared and photographs taken so that the conservators can understand the additions and alterations carried out in the past. Conservation and restoration work was successfully carried out by skilled local craftsmen under the supervision of the experts of CCF.

  • Executive Summary Introduction The Living Heritage Trust The Traditional Village or Puranagama ... Conclusion
  • Executive Summary This report is based on the findings of a privately funded initiative, which has conducted over one and half years of formal field study based on over twenty years of working experience in this sphere. Kudumbigala is the name of an abandoned region in the jungle belonging to the villagers of Panama, situated close to the Kumbukkan Oya estuary in Yala East National Park. Nearby is Okanda Devale , a temple shrine dedicated to Skanda-Murukan, situated on a rocky outcrop along the seacoast. The Park is visited via the Eastern Province through the town of Pottuvil (Arugam Bay), the village of Panama and then along a gravel road through Helawa to Kudumbigala and Okanda. There were once several Panama families living in Kudumbigala during the cultivation season. The escalation of the war led to the villagers as well as the Department of Wildlife Conservation fleeing the area. Except for the Special Task Force of the Sri Lanka Police who are in control of Panama, this area is now a gray area, frequented by only transient guerrillas, passing military, and food gatherers. The presence of Wildlife Department officials recommences at the Menik Ganga. In effect, the 60-km cart track from Panama to the Menik Ganga is not policed by any authority. The Sri Lanka Military occasionally carry out operations in this area, and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) are also present. Outsiders hardly visit the region in spite of its natural beauty, and visitors to the National Park now enter from the south and stop at the Menik Ganga, not daring to cross.

SRI LANKA - HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE SRI LANKA'S HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE covers more than 2,000 years. Known as Lankathe "resplendent land"in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, the island has numerous other references that testify to the island's natural beauty and wealth. Islamic folklore maintains that Adam and Eve were offered refuge on the island as solace for their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Asian poets, noting the geographical location of the island and lauding its beauty, called it the "pearl upon the brow of India." A troubled nation in the 1980s, torn apart by communal violence, Sri Lanka has more recently been called India's "fallen tear." Sri Lanka claims a democratic tradition matched by few other developing countries, and since its independence in 1948, successive governments have been freely elected. Sri Lanka's citizens enjoy a long life expectancy, advanced health standards, and one of the highest literacy rates in the world despite the fact that the country has one of the lowest per capita incomes. In the years since independence, Sri Lanka has experienced severe communal clashes between its Buddhist Sinhalese majority approximately 74 percent of the populationand the country's largest minority group, the Sri Lankan Tamils, who are Hindus and comprise nearly 13 percent of the population. The communal violence that attracted the harsh scrutiny of the international media in the late 1980s can best be understood in the context of the island's complex historical developmentits ancient and intricate relationship to India's civilization and its more than four centuries under colonial rule by European powers.

During the last one million years, when humans are known to have existed in various parts of India, Sri Lanka was connected to the sub-continent on numerous occasions. The rise and fall of sea level (due to cold/warm fluctuations in the global climate) determined the periodicities of these connections, the last separation having occurred at ca. 7000 BP. There is secure evidence of settlements in Sri Lanka by 130,000 years ago, probably by 300,000 BP and possibly by 500,000 BP or earlier.
    • The Lost Continent of Lemuria (The lost continent of Lemuria (Mu) was originally referenced in the works of several 19th century scientists. Observing similarities between the geology and fauna of India and Madagascar, some scientists theorized that there once existed a huge land mass (Lemuria) in the Indian Ocean that spanned the two locales. As with Atlantis, the days of Lemuria came to an end with a cataclysmic natural disaster that sank the continent into the sea.) Prehistoric basis for the rise of civilisation in Sri Lanka and southern India (Batadomba-lena cave, Sri Lanka (29,000-9,500 B.C.), where the ramains of prehistoric humans have been found)
