Sri Lanka This page contains valuable information for anyone interested in Sri Lankan History I have included here work of renowned historians such as people like Dr. Paranavitana. This site highlights the true history of our country recorded factually for over Two Thousand Five Hundred years to be of invaluable service to anyone who is interested in Sri Lanka and its history. This is specially true in the current situation where there is a movement to hide the true history from our future generations and to present a warped history to the generations hereafter. (They consider depriving the future generations of their roots is going to bring peace to Sri Lanka) Note:- This section of the site is in no way intended to create racial disharmony. This is intended to be an educational and an informative tool for those who have a genuine interest in our country. As you will notice after reading in entirety the content of this section that all races have been living in this country in harmony until the insecurities of a few politicians changed our future. Hard truth of war Location Located 18 miles (29 kilometers) off the southeastern tip of the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka lies about 400 miles (645 kilometers) north of the equator. Colombo is the capital and largest city. A new capital, Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte, was designated in 1977. The country has a total land area of 25,332 square miles (65,610 square kilometers).

The culture and history of the Tamil people of Eelam has a history traced back many thousands of years, and provides a wealth of knowledge steeped in ancient tradition and religion. Lunar and Poya Days
Sri Lanka is primarily a Buddhist country and most of its festivals are based on the lunar calendar. Every full moon day, also known as 'Poya' is a holiday. The Buddha encouraged his disciples to undertake spiritual practices during the full moon period and Sri Lankan Buddhists spend these days in meditation and prayer. Each Poya day is related to an incident in the life of the Buddha or to a historic Buddhist event. January (Duruthu)
Duruthu Perahera is conducted on a full moon day in January at the Buddhist temple in Kelaniya. It commemorates the first visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka.
