Squash seeks Olympic spotlight In the Nick, with Neale Emslie SQUASH will be desperately hoping to boost its profile worldwide when the International Olympic Committee meet later this year to consider new sports for the 2012 Olympic Games. The sport has been shortlisted with golf, rugby, roller sports and karate for possible inclusion at the 2012 Games and could be added to the programme if any of the existing 28 sports is removed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 8. All 28 Olympic sports will face the vote in Singapore and must win a majority from IOC members to avoid being dropped from the list. If a sport is axed, the IOC executive board will select a replacement from a list of the five applicants. The sport recommended by the executive board to replace an outgoing sport would first need a two-thirds majority to become an “Olympic sport” and would then need a simple majority in a second vote to be admitted to the 2012 Games programme. Squash officials are banking on the game’s flexibility as a major attraction, with the now established tradition of holding tournaments in all-glass court in such various venues as shopping malls and main halls of railway stations.

WISPA Tour Inspires China With Vision To Hold World's Biggest Event The visit to Beijing, the second leg of the promotional tour to China organised jointly by the Women's International Squash Players' Association and the China Squash Association, has inspired the CSA to aim ultimately at staging the world's biggest event. Following the stage in Shanghai, top world squash players Rachael Grinham and Nicol David again impressed a host of players, officials and media in China's capital city over three days, visiting four different clubs. The 2004 tour to China is the latest initiative in WISPA's continuing drive to promote women's squash around the world. Led by Australia's Rachael Grinham, the world No2, and Asian No1 Nicol David, the world No8 from Malaysia; featured clinics, exhibition matches and coaching sessions. The party was welcomed by delegates from the CSA, including Vice President Wang Li Wei, Secretary General Peng Ning, and the day-to-day driving force behind the organisation Deng Li, the Deputy Secretary General. Elliotte Friedman says modern penathlon is irrelevant and should be dumped from the Olympics. The Olympic sports menu is in flux.
Each of the 28 sports contested at the Athens Olympics last summer are busy justifying their existence to the International Olympic Committee in anticipation of a July vote, which could determine their appearance at future Games.
Any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics. Golf, rugby, karate, squash and roller sports are waiting to get in, but no sport will be added unless one is voted out.
No sport has been cut from the Summer Olympics since polo in 1936.
Weird sports have almost weaseled their way into the Olympic spotlight (remember suggestions of adding ballroom dancing?). And extreme sports have made a case for future consideration (BMX will debut at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games). What should stay and what should go? Contributors:

Baseball, softball axed from 2012 Olympics
WebPosted Fri, 08 Jul 2005 01:40:30 EDT CBC Sports The International Olympic Committee has slashed baseball and softball from the London 2012 Olympic program. Baseball will not be part of the 2012 London Olympic program. (CP File Photo) Both sports were dropped from the Games following an IOC vote Friday in Singapore. The other current 26 Olympic disciplines will remain part of the London 2012 roster. No new sports were added. Baseball and softball, which remain full medal events at the 2008 Beijing Games, are the first sports to be trimmed from the Olympic roster since polo was cut in 1936. The move chops 16 teams and more than 300 athletes from the Olympics.

DanceSport in the Olympics
The state of affairs before 2000
On Sept. 8, 1997 IOC granted the International DanceSport Federation (IDSF) status as a recognized federation and a member of the IOC. This does not mean that dancing has been recognzed as a medal sport. It simply means that the IOC has recognized an international body for governing dance-sport. This recognition is granted under Chapter 29 of the IOC Charter. Chapters 30 and 57 of the IOC Charter grant the international federation for a given sport the right to set the technical rules for competitions in that sport. So IDSF gets to set all the rules for DanceSport including styling and technique. The reasons for having an international federation recognized by IOC, even though the sport is not included in the Olympics, are 1) because it is a requirement for ultimately becoming a medal sport and 2) IOC believes strongly in furthering sports on the international level. DanceSport will NOT be a medal sport in Sydney in 2000 or in Athens in 2004. Under chapter 52 of the IOC Charter, sports must receive medal programme inclusion at least 7 years before the games begin, which means the deadline for the IOC Session (members) to vote on inclusion in the 2008 Olympics is September 2001. IDSF is planning on submitting an application for inclusion in 2008. It appears that the biggest hurdle that DanceSport faces is the sport versus art distinction. The IOC recently held a roundtable forum on Sports and Culture. One of the general themes was that art was used to celebrate the sports - and that both art and sport form part of the Olympic Culture. Also, the panel members seemed to say that sports are inherently artisitic, but that which is artistic is not necessarily sporting. A number of commentators tried to define art versus sport, but they seem to have generally failed, and resigned themselves to "I know sport (or art) when I see it."

Golf, four other sports in running for Olympic inclusion
By Stephen Wilson
ASSOCIATED PRESS 9:58 a.m. September 22, 2004 The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it notified those five sports' governing bodies that they will be "studied further" as part of a review of the Summer Games' competition schedule. The IOC is assessing the 28 sports on the program of last month's Athens Olympics to determine whether changes should be made. IOC president Jacques Rogge repeatedly has said that sports only will be added if others are dropped. The maximum will stay at 28 sports, with around 10,500 athletes. In Athens, the IOC formally accepted the criteria for judging which sports should be on the program. Among the key points are global participation, spectator attendance, media interest, the sport's anti-doping policies, and whether the sport features the world's best athletes in the Olympics. Removal of a sport requires a vote of the full IOC membership. The last sport dropped from the Summer Olympics was polo in 1936.

Ball sports lose out as Olympic programme cut
From John Goodbody in Singapore
RUGBY sevens, golf and squash, all traditional British sports, have been blocked from being included in the 2012 Games in London after an extraordinary day of move and counter-move in Olympic politics. The 117th session of the IOC produced yet another series of surprises after giving London the Games instead of Paris. Members decided yesterday to drop baseball and softball from the programme of the 28 sports, but despite the urging of Jacques Rogge, the IOC President, they were not replaced with any of the five shortlisted sports. The decision is a blow to the authority of Rogge, who had tried to get rugby and golf on to the programme at the Mexico City session in 2002 but had been rebuffed. NI_MPU('middle');
