After dropping baseball and softball from the 28-sports list and selecting squash and karate (above rugby, roller sports and golf) as the candidate sports to replace them, the International Olympic Committee ultimately decided that it would reduce the total number of sports in the London Olympic Summer games to 26 rather than allow squash and karate into the program. A two-thirds vote was necessary for admission as a new sport into the Games, and neither squash nor karate was able to garner even 40% of the votes cast by the IOC members this past Friday in Singapore.

Olympic Inclusion: Roller Sports Gets Mixed Review in Olympic Sports Report Report Cites Low Worldwide Distribution; Lack of Coordination With "TV-Friendly" Teen Skating By Robert "Just the Factoids" Burnson The Olympic Programme Commission gave roller sports a mixed review in its report of the 28 current and five prospective sports for the 2012 Summer Games. The report, released today by the International Olympic Committee, cites roller sports' relatively low worldwide reach, small media draw and small revenues. It also notes that "teenage skating activities" by which it means aggressive skating or skateboarding "are outside the control of" roller sports' governing body. Another Sports Also Get Dinged But while the report notes the sports' shortcomings, it also points out problems with the other four Olympic contenders: golf, karate, rugby and squash. It notes that some of the best golfers in the world might choose to skip the Olympics. Why? Because the Olympics would interfere with their lucrative PGA tour.

Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained.
Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since water polo in 1936.
The IOC will consider replacing them with two sports from a waiting list of five sports: golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports.

Think the Ryder Cup was exciting? Golf might have a competition including golfers from all nations in 2012: the Olympics.
LONDON - Golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports are in the running for possible inclusion at the 2012 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee said Wednesday it notified those five sports' governing bodies that they will be "studied further" as part of a review of the Summer Games' competition schedule. The IOC is assessing the 28 sports on the program of last month's Athens Olympics to determine whether changes should be made. The list of sports will remain the same for the 2008 Beijing Games, with any modifications taking effect in 2012. The IOC will decide on the sports program - and select the 2012 host city - at its session in Singapore in July. IOC president Jacques Rogge repeatedly has said that sports only will be added if others are dropped. The maximum will stay at 28 sports, with around 10,500 athletes.
