LONDON The IOC released a hefty report Monday assessing the 28 sports hoping to stay in the Olympics and the five trying to get in, though the organization made no recommendations for adding or dropping any sport. The 265-page review by the International Olympic Committee's program commission lists facts and figures across a range of 33 criteria. The report is designed to serve as a guide for IOC members when they vote on the sports program in Singapore next month. Each of the 28 sports contested in Athens last summer will be put to a vote; any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics.

Squash Hopes dashed:
The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games.
Unfortunately for us, the IOC Executive Board also decided that as the numbers would be kept to 26, none of the five candidate sports (Squash, Roller Sports, Golf, Karate or Rugby) would be added to the programme of the 2012 Games Damn! Below is the full text of the World Squash press release on the issue: Squash Looks To The Future After Olympic Disappointment
Squash Looks To The Future After Olympic Disappointment Ted Wallbutton, Chief Executive of the WSF for fourteen years until his retirement at the beginning of this year, added: "Squash has come from nowhere in Olympic terms to become the first placed sport outside of the programme. It is an amazing achievement and far from failing we should be proud that we won the race, but failed to collect the prize."

NO SECOND CHANCE FOR SQUASH:
"Around the Rings had reported comments from a high-ranking IOC member Friday night that the Executive Board would meet to consider whether there was any way to re-consider the sports rejected on Friday. "An IOC official says no such meeting will be called by President Jacques Rogge."
But Rogge offered hope for 2016, suggesting that new sports should "be treated the same way in terms of the number of votes needed." In the Papers BLOODY WEEK

what the press have to say ... "It is very disappointing. We thought we had a great chance. It is a missed opportunity. I am not just talking about squash. I think the public wants to see a couple of other sports at the Olympics. "The Olympics would have been massive for us in terms of exposure and media attention. It would have meant so much.

So strong are the feelings that ASOIF - the body representing the summer Games sports - has called an extraordinary general assembly in Geneva on June 7. The summit meeting was called after members of ASOIF revolted over Rogge's recently announced plan to force all 28 Olympic sports to face a vote at the IOC Session in Singapore to confirm they will be part of the 2012 Olympics.

Karate and roller sports complete the list, while softball, baseball and modern pentathlon could be excluded. "We have sent a questionnaire to the 28 Summer federations represented in the Olympic Games," an IOC spokesman said. "It is all part of an ongoing review of the programme. As part of this process the IOC has decided to include five sports not currently in the Games." IOC president Jacques Rogge has said that no sport can be included without another dropping out. "We'll decide (about new entries) in 2005. Golf, rugby, squash and roller skating are knocking on the door," Rogge told the Corriere della Sera newspaper. "But for every novelty, we will need to give up a discipline. Nothing can be added. The golden numbers are 300 events, 28 sports, 10,400 athletes at most."

Squash offers charms for Olympic place: Jahangir KARACHI: Squash legend Jahangir Khan of Pakistan on Tuesday showed confidence that squash offers more charms than other sports to earn a place in the 2012 Olympic Games. "Squash is played more world-wide and the choice of venues in squash offer more charms than a lot of other sports to earn a place in the 2012 Olympic Games," Jahangir, president of World Squash Federation (WSF) said. "All those cities who are bidding to host the 2012 Games have exciting venues for squash. You can have Olympic squash at the Big Bang or London Bridge if United Kingdom wins the rights," opined Jahangir, who won six world and a record ten British open titles. Squash along with golf, rugby, roller sports and karate vie for a possible place at the 2012 Games if any of the existing 28 Olympic sports is removed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 8. The IOC earlier this month decided that all 28 Olympic sports will face the vote in Singapore in two months time and must win a majority from IOC members to avoid being dropped.

The report was two years in preparation. Squash is one the five additional "recognized international" sports, along with Golf, Rugby, Roller Sports and Karate.
