Thursday Jul 7, 2005 ts Will Olympics bump baseball for squash? The International Olympic Committee yesterday gave the 2012 Summer Games to London. Tomorrow, they`ll decide what sports the city will host. Wednesday, July 6, 2005 London Is Chosen for Olympics as New York Bid Falls Short NYT SINGAPORE, July 6 - In a surprising upset over front-running Paris, London snatched away the 2012 Olympics today, capping a comeback in a bidding race it seemed nearly out of just a year ago. London was awarded the 2012 Olympics on Wednesday, upsetting European rival Paris in the final round of voting to take the Games back to the British capital for the first time since 1948. BBC London beats Paris to 2012 Games The 2012 Olympic Games will be held in London, the International Olympic Committee has announced. London won a two-way fight with Paris by 54 votes to 50 at the IOC meeting in Singapore, after bids from Moscow, New York and Madrid were eliminated. Prime Minister Tony Blair called the win "a momentous day" for Britain. Shares of British construction companies soared, while mortgage lenders predicted house prices in the capital would rocket.

Dramatic venues a big plus for squash LONDON: Having been staged in front of dramatic backdrops like the Great Pyramids in Egypt, squash can offer some of the most memorable and photogenic venues in global sport. Hardly surprisingly, this is one of its greatest strengths and a powerful marketing tool as the racket sport bids to appear at the Olympics for the first time. Squash has been shortlisted with golf, rugby, roller sports and karate for possible inclusion at the 2012 Games and could be added to the programme if any of the existing 28 sports is removed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 8. All 28 Olympic sports will face the vote in Singapore and must win a majority from IOC members to avoid being dropped from the list. If a sport is axed, the IOC Executive Board will select a replacement from a list of the five applicants. The sport recommended by the executive board to replace an outgoing sport would first need a two-thirds majority to become an Olympic sport and would then need a simple majority in a second vote to be admitted to the 2012 Games programme.

Egypt’s Ashour wins World Junior Squash C’ship Shewfelt tumbles to men’s floor gold ATHENS: Kyle Shewfelt edged out Romania’s Marian Dragulescu on a tiebreak to give Canada their first ever gymnastics gold medal in the Olympics men’s floor exercise on Sunday. Shewfelt executed his powerful tumbles to earn a score of 9.787, which was the same as Dragulescu, but was named champion once the tiebreak rules were applied by the judges. Bulgaria’s Jordan Jovtchev settled for his second successive Olympic bronze in the event. Paul Hamm, who was awarded the all-round gold on Wednesday after a judging error denied South Korea’s Yang Tae-young the title, was expected to take the title but the pressure was clearly etched on his face and he finished fifth. Agarkar ruled out of Australia clash today AMSTERDAM: Indian seamer Ajit Agarkar has been ruled out of Monday’s one-day triangular series match against Australia in the Netherlands, media reported on Sunday. Agarkar played in India’s 66-run defeat by Pakistan in the first match of the tournament at Amstelveen on Saturday but is suffering from a side strain. India have been struck by injury setbacks with leading batsman Sachin Tendulkar missing the entire tournament with tennis elbow while spinner Harbhajan Singh and fast bowler Ashish Nehra have been suffering from viruses. Batsman Mohammad Kaif is also a doubt with a shoulder injury with India needing to beat Australia to have a chance of reaching the final on August 28. The tournament is a warm-up for the ICC Champions Trophy starting in England on September 10.

THE HISTORY OF RACQUETBALL Racquetball a mere youngster compared to tennis, squash and other racquet sports has encountered a myriad of changes in its short 26-year history. Simple wooden racquets have given way to state-of-the-art frames, intense athlete now share court time with teens and senior adults, and the game, which was born in the USA, is now played in 87 countries worldwide.
Racquetball, which celebrated its Silver Anniversary last year, is experiencing a renewed surge in popularity and favor with over 9.3 million active participants. More and more people . . . including Baby Boomers, the 35-44 year old group responsible for making racquetball hot in the 70's and 80's . . . are coming back for fitness and fun. In the Beginning Racquetball can trace its beginnings as early as the 1920's here in America, although the origin of racquetball currently played today has been credited to Joe Sobek, a tennis pro from Greenwich, Connecticut. Seeking an indoor alternative to tennis, Sobek in 1949 combined the rules of squash and handball to create a new game dubbed paddle racquets. He drew up plans using a platform tennis racquet as a pattern, and had an initial order of 25 prototypes made.
The sport quickly caught on, but it wasn’t until 1968 that racquetball began to realize its potential. Contributing to its rapid rise in popularity was the birth of the International Racquetball Association (IRA), a precursor to the American Amateur Racquetball Association (AARA). Suddenly, racquetball had an organized tournament structure and a uniform set of rules. Another factor was that new equipment specifically designed for the sport became commercially available.

History meets athletic legend in cities throughout the globe, from Athens to Nagano.
By Colleen Kaleda
Athens, Greece

It was 776 B.C. when that first foot race was held, in Olympia, about 75 miles from Athens in the Peloponnese. Dedicated to Zeus, the Olympic festival was a religious rite, held every four years. The sacrifices have gone, but the athletic competitions and crowning of winners are our remainders of that ancient time.

Elliotte Friedman says modern penathlon is irrelevant and should be dumped from the Olympics. The Olympic sports menu is in flux.
Each of the 28 sports contested at the Athens Olympics last summer are busy justifying their existence to the International Olympic Committee in anticipation of a July vote, which could determine their appearance at future Games.
Any sport failing to get a majority will be dropped for the 2012 Olympics. Golf, rugby, karate, squash and roller sports are waiting to get in, but no sport will be added unless one is voted out.
No sport has been cut from the Summer Olympics since polo in 1936.
Weird sports have almost weaseled their way into the Olympic spotlight (remember suggestions of adding ballroom dancing?). And extreme sports have made a case for future consideration (BMX will debut at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games). What should stay and what should go? Contributors:

Canadian Olympic Committee Disappointed In IOC's Decision To Remove Baseball and Softball From Olympic Program
TORONTO, July 8, 2005 - The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) expressed disappointment at the International Olympic Commttee's (IOC) decision to remove baseball and softball from its Olympic program during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore.
"The Canadian Olympic Committee regrets that baseball and softball will not remain on the Olympic program beyond the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing," said COC President Michael Chambers. "Canada has a strong history of success in both sports and the removal of baseball and softball certainly adds challenges to Canada's overall pursuit of medal success at future Olympic Games. The Canadian Olympic Committee respects the IOC's right to make this decision. However, it is extremely unfortunate that two sports which are so much a part of the sporting culture in Canada have been removed from the Olympic program."
Chambers went on to add, "Compounding our disappointment with the IOC's decision today, was its following decision not to add the recommended sports of karate and squash to the 2012 Olympic Games program, leaving the program for 2012 with only 26 sports, two shy of the 28 sport limit."

Golf, rugby return to Olympics?
Golf, rugby and squash are on a shortlist of five sports to be assessed for possible inclusion in the 2012 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee is reviewing the merits of all 28 current Olympic sports and disciplines following the Athens Games and has decided also to assess golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. "We have sent a questionnaire to the 28 Summer federations represented in the Olympic Games," an IOC spokesman said. "It is all part of the ongoing review of the Olympic programme. As part of this process the IOC has decided to include five sports not currently in the Games." The IOC earlier this year drew up a list of 33 criteria on which Olympic sports would be assessed, ranging from the history and development of the sport to gender equity and the impact on the environment of staging the sport. "These criteria will help us to make a decision at the session in Singapore next July as to the programme for the Olympic Games in 2012," the spokesman said. MAJOR BOOST Three sports - softball, baseball and modern pentathlon - had been under threat of exclusion from the 2008 Games in Beijing before being reprieved in 2002.

SPORTS AND RECREATION HISTORY The Sports and Recreation Center The Sports and Recreation Center complex is a dynamic facility providing many and varied types of activity areas used by University constituents and the general public. It play an important role in the "campus life experience" of our students. As the facilities are all multipurpose areas, it is adaptable for a multitude of activities. It is a focal point on campus for social and recreational activities. We are proud of our Sports and Recreation Center complex and its importance to the overall goals, mission, and vision of our university. Considered by many in the field to be one of the finest state-of-the-art multipurpose facilities in the Northwest, the concept for the Sports and Recreation Center (SRC) began as the vision of Dr. Jack Leighton. Dr. Leighton, as Eastern's Chair of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Athletics from 1953 to 1981, was the leader of a task force that developed the plan for the facilities. Department professors Bob Anderson, Peggy Gazette and Pete Hagelin, along with Wayne Loomis of Facilities Planning, rounded out the committee, which as a team, gathered information and shaped the ideas into the recreation and sports complex we have today.

Archaeologists believe the ancient Olympic Games began more than 4,000 years ago in Olympia, a valley in Greece. Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude … well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. Today, not only are women allowed to watch and compete, they are encouraged to do so. Check out a few of our historical Olympic pages here at usolympicteam.com.
