Roberto Caracciolo did not know whether to laugh or cry when he was selected to run for Equatorial Guinea at the Olympics.
Because, like it or not, he was always going to be compared to compatriot Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani. The population of Equatorial Guinea believe Roberto is a genuine medal contender Caracciolo's hapless countryman provided one of the most farcical moments in Olympic history four years ago when he struggled to finish a 100m swimming heat. But the 22-year-old is determined to put as much distance between himself and the Eel Mark II tag when he competes in the 1500m on Friday. "I don't know if Eric not being here in Athens is a blessing or not," Caracciolo told BBC Sport.

Riding on the spirited slogan of " Malaysia Boleh " (Malaysia Can), Malaysia passed with "flying colors" when it successfully staged the last Commonwealth Games of this century the 16th Commonwealth Games or the Kuala Lumpur 98 from Sept 11 to Sept 2, 1998. The 16th Commonwealth Games held for the first time in Asia, was a first for Malaysia and the biggest sporting event that it has ever hosted. It was attended by 5,000 athletes and officials from 70 countries with a record number of 16 sports including the debut of team events. Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth officially closed the Games, also hailed as the biggest and best ever in the Games' history at the Olympic-class National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Sept 21. "Malaysia promised us the best Games ever and they have delivered that promise," Commonwealth Games Federation chairman Michael Fennell said during the Games' closing ceremony at the 100,000-seat National Stadium in Bukit Jalil which was packed to capacity.

Brief Record of Malaysia's Participation in Past Olympic Games since 1956 Prior to the formation of the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council in 1953 and its subsequent recognition by the IOC in 1954, some Malayans may have participated in the Olympic Games, representing their countries of origin, such as China and India. After receiving the recognition of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1954, the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council, as it was then known, sent a contingent of 33 athletes from 6 sports to participate in the Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne. Since then the Olympic Council of Malaysia, as it is known since 1964, has been participating in all the Olympic Games, except the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
The Olympic Contingent of the Federation of Malaya to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprised six athletes, two swimmers, 18 Hockey players, three Weightlifters and four shooters. There was only one female athlete in the Contingent, Ms. Annie Choong, who participated in Athletics. Amongst the Olympians were Koh Eng Tong, the 1950 British Empire Weightlifting gold medallist in the Featherweight Division and Tan Kim Bee, the silver medallist in the Light Heavyweight Division. The Hockey team finished 9th out of 12 teams. The Chef de Mission was Mr. H.M. De Souza (Hockey) and the Flag Bearer was Tan Eng Bee (Weightlifting)

World Squash History
One Hundred and Thirty Years of Squash For over 1000 years man has invented and enjoyed a variety of games played by hitting a ball with either a closed fist - as in "fives" or "bunch of fingers" - or with some form of bat or racket. Around the year 1148 the French played "le Paume", meaning "the palm of the hand", which developed into Jeu de Paume, Real Tennis, Royal Tennis or, if you play the sport, simply Tennis. At sometime in the early 19th century this obsession with rackets and balls spawned another variety of the sport in the unlikely birthplace of the Fleet Prison in London. The prisoners in "The Fleet", mainly debtors, took their exercise by hitting a ball against walls, of which there were many, with rackets and so started the game of "Rackets". Rackets progressed, by some strange route, to Harrow and other select English schools about 1820 and it was from this source that our own sport of Squash, or Squash Rackets, developed. Squash was invented in Harrow school around 1830, when the pupils discovered that a punctured Rackets ball, which "squashed" on impact with the wall, produced a game with a greater variety of shots and required much more effort on the part of the players, who could not simply wait for the ball to bounce back to them as with Rackets. The variant proved popular and in 1864 the first four Squash courts were constructed at the school and Squash was officially founded as a sport in its own right.

Sad Day In Olympic History
by Dave
7/08/2005 10:58:00 AM It is a said day in the history of the modern Olympics, at least for me. Today the news says the IOC voted to eliminate baseball and softball from the games beginning in 2012. Baseball is pretty much played in all of North and South America, Japan, China, to a lesser extent Russia and some other nations. Softball is bigger in Australia, Japan and China than it is in the U.S. Venezuela hs a good team.
The sports which may replace the two are golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. Golf is a joke as far as I'm concerned. What other sport can you think of where one of the biggest icons claims that walking less than 5 miles in around 3 hours is a major part of the sport? That's what (I think it was) Jack Nicholas said about permitting Casey Martin to ride a golf cart in order to compete. Martin suffers from a disease which prevents him from walking the entire course. Nicholas was claiming that walking this relatively short distance slowly amounted to a major aspect of the game. So it cannot be referred to as a sport.
Rugby is kind of cool but it is hardly a major sport around the world. Sure it has a good geographical spread but there are not a huge number of fans. I thought squash was food. I'm not really sure what sport is named this. Karate has my total respect. I have enjoyed watching it on several occassions, mostly Olympic coverage. I think this should be in the games. I'm not sure why it is not.

Rugby League coaches backing Edgerton's big day!
TWO Super League coaches are backing Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash
Club's World Squash Day on Saturday.
Huddersfield Giants' Jon Sharp and Leeds Rhinos' Tony Smith have both given
their seal of approval to the Edgerton event, which starts at 9am and
finishes at 7pm.
Both coaches are keen squash players and were happy to lend their support to
help promote an event which has been co-ordinated by Malcolm Pickup, the Huddersfield club's squash director. Pickup, safety chief at the Galpharm Stadium and who has played and coached both men, believes the support of the Super League coaches will do the promotion of his event no harm whatsoever. "It's great that two Super League coaches are so willing to put their names to this event," said Pickup.
