The Wisconsin Square Dance Events Pages have undergone a few changes. Primarily, we have a new navigation system which should streamline things for our visitors. This site is intended to serve the Wisconsin square dance community and visitors to this state. We are not a part of, nor are we aligned with the Square Dance Association of Wisconsin or any of the area organizations which are under the SDAW umbrella. This is an independent effort which relies on clubs, dancers, callers, cuers, and individuals to give us information on dances, events, lessons, and clubs in their areas. Our listings are the result of the information which has been provided to us. If there is a club that you know has changed it's dance schedule, contact information, or lessons, please let us know so that we can update the listings. Our listings are at no cost to clubs, callers, cuers, or organizations. The Wisconsin Square Dance Events pages is and has always been a non-commercial and non-profit effort.

PREFACE
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of the Mainstream call definitions is to provide clear, concise, simple explanations of the terms and calls used in the Mainstream Program.
(1) STARTING FORMATIONS Starting formations are listed for each of the defined calls. The smallest basic formation has been listed. Multiples of this formation may be possible. For example, the minimum number of dancers required to dosado is two. It is possible, however, to have four dancers in a line facing four dancers in an opposite line ready for a dosado. In this case, there are four multiples of the basic formation.
(2) FACING DANCERS Facing dancers, unless otherwise specified, may be any combination of men and women.
(3) COUPLES Couples, unless otherwise specified, may be any combination of men and women.

Governor Proclaims September 19-25 as "Square Dance Week" for Washington State!
On April 17, 1979, the square dance became the official Washington state dance. When the pioneers came west, they brought with them a dance called the quadrille, which means square in French. The pioneers liked the simpler term and so the square dance was born. The dance is known for its series of figures and footwork. Dancers are directed by a caller. It is easy to learn, a good form of exercise and fun. webmaster@squaredance-wa.org Thank you for visiting, we hope you have found our site informative and will come back often. All About Round Dancing
Round Dancing is fun.
Round dancers spend time with their partners and friends, enjoying and moving rhythmically to great music. Round dancers participate purely for the fun of it - there are no competitions, no judges, no dance awards. Round dancers are rewarded with lifelong friendships. Round Dancing is an exciting social activity.

Members Area A bout M odern W estern S quare D ancing Like many things presumed to be uniquely American, square dancing is in fact an extension and refinement of numerous foreign influences brought to this country by early immigrants. Owing its origins to the French Quadrilles, the Irish Jigs, the English Reels, and the Spanish Fandangos, square dancing evolved from the Country Dancing of New England, the Confederate Reels of Virginia and the Carolinas, and the Running Sets of Appalachia. This evolution culminated in the mining towns of Colorado and California where the "smooth" or modern western form of square dancing emerged. Today, square dancing is unique among all other forms of folk dancing. It is the only dance form for which all the dance movements are extemporaneously announced by a designated "caller," who combines the dancers' knowledge of an average of 120 distinct moves to develop an original and unique dance sequence. The four-couple "square" and caller format allows for the infinite variety of dance experiences that continue to delight both veteran and beginning dancers. The building-block structure of modern square dancing makes mastery of the techniques easy and attainable for all ages. The INTERNET offers numerous links that provide additional insight into exactly "What is square dancing?" Among the best of these is Robert French's site

179. Square Dance Attire
Few people come in square dance attire regularly; pants on women are fine, If you go to a hoedown, virtually everybody comes in square dance attire.
http://www.mixed-up.com/quads/articles/attire-all.html
Square Dance Attire
by Bill van Melle, October 23, 1994 Traditionally, men wear long-sleeved shirts (I think the theory on long sleeves is to avoid grossing people out on Left Allemande on a warm day). Women wear frilly skirts with petticoats, though in recent years, "prairie skirts" have come to be acceptable square dance attire. However, the Quads is an incredibly casual club. Few people come in square dance attire regularly; pants on women are fine, and unless you tend to sweat profusely (be you male or female), short sleeves are okay. If you go to another club, however, be aware that women will look very out of place in jeans, and men should wear long sleeves no matter how dry they are. If you go to a hoedown, virtually everybody comes in square dance attire. In fact, at some hoedowns and festivals, it is requiredmeaning that there's a good chance they'll not let you in if they don't like your clothing, or at least will hassle you. Fortunately, at most beginner hoedowns they do not expect you to be in full square dance attire, so you don't really have to worry about this for several months now. But where do you get those funny clothes anyway? Men can get western shirts a number of places, including Sears. Some "western wear" stores have a square dancing corner. But there are also stores, whose number is unfortunately declining in our area, that specialize in square dance clothes. They sell dresses, petticoats, patterns to make your own dresses, western shirts, hats, shoes, all sorts of things. Many offer a discount to newer dancers. Just say this is the first time you've bought any square dance clothes and that you just started a class recently.

SQUARE DANCE Square dancing has moved on from its original simpler style to a highly complex set of foot patterns and weaving movements. Because square dance has been around for a couple centuries, it has developed the reputation of being old-fashioned. Nothing could be further from the truth- more people dance squares than ever before. The reason square dance has thrived while many other dances fell by the wayside is because it is intriguing, highly social, adaptable to many styles of music, and lots of fun. It is, however, a skilled dance which requires that some effort be put into learning it. In Rhode Island, Square Dance classes for beginners usually start in the Fall and run through May of the next year. After students finish the series of beginner classes, they are able to participate in Mainstream level dances. Most square dances in New England include round dances-see the article below for more information.
