Who We Are About WebMD Site Map sponsored Featured Centers You are in Women, Men, Lifestyle Overview Aging Alternative Medicine Dental Emotional Wellness Eye Health Fitness Healthy Sexuality Men Women This article is from the WebMD Feature Archive Don't Be a Square Dance! Do-Si-Do Fitness By Denise Mann WebMD Feature July 9, 2001 "Bow to your partner, bow to your corner, circle left, alemand left ... swing and promenade home." In squares of eight across the country, Americans from senior-citizen age on down are linking arms, sashaying, and "do-si-doing" themselves to longer, healthier, and happier lives. They're having a blast and also lowering their risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, age-related memory loss, osteoporosis, and depression. Good for Body and Mind With all its moving, twisting, and turning, square dancing provides more than the daily dose of heart- and bone-healthy physical activity. Remembering all the calls from "do-si-do" to 'alemand' keeps the mind sharp, potentially staving off age-related memory loss, experts say. And the companionship that regular square dancing offers is an antidote to depression and loneliness, a statement confirmed by square-dancing advocates everywhere. Take Larry McKinley, a 62-year-old who has been square dancing for 30-plus years with his wife, Sue who, incidentally, he met at a square dance. "We do it as often as we can, maybe five or six times a week," he tells WebMD.

Santa's Square
Dance Club
The Santa's Square Dance Club provides the opportunity and means for all to learn and participate in organized square and round dance functions. Square and round dance lessons are made available for a fee. The Club was founded in North Pole in 1967 by Dick and Carol Manning, a Fairbanks caller and his wife. Also instrumental in the club's formation were Hector and Jeannette Therriault, local square dancers. Hector was Master of the North Pole Grange at the time and he and Jeannette felt that square dancing would be a wholesome activity for the North Pole community and especially for the young people in the area. Santa's Square Dance Club moved from North Pole into Fairbanks in 1975 where they danced at Walt's Hoedown Center, which had been built by square dancers on property owned by Walt Schuette, a well known promoter of Square, Round and Folk dancing in the area. The building is still located at the site on South Cushman and is used for dance instruction. In 1981 the square dance community completed building the Farthest North Square and Round Dance Center located at Alaskaland and commonly known as the Alaskaland Dance Center. The Santa's dance there every second and fourth Saturday throughout the year. David Smith is the club caller. The club also holds

Good Contra and Square Dancing Defined

(This article was originally posted to the Usenet newsgroup Okay, I've been asked to put-up or shut-up, and though I really should be packing, I'll give it a try. A good dancer has complete awareness of how it all fits together: the music, the calls, the figures, his/her partner, neighbor, corner, opposites, etc., the whole set, the whole floor, and, maybe most importantly, his/her own body and all its parts. There are lots of things that the good dancer does that are seemingly unknown or totally unimaginable to many twirl and barf dancers.
  • only once around. (As you can quess, this happened to me the other night. The beginners did fine, the experienced contra dancers didn't listen. They must have felt they had a right to swing as long as they wanted.)
  • Good dancers embellish appropriately. I'll bet many people who think of themselves as good dancers couldn't get through a dance without all the extra twirls. They don't know what the basic
  • Good dancers know where a figure is going so they can direct their momentum to the flow of the dance. This is a much bigger challenge in squares. Who/where do you face when you end a swing? Or a do-si-do? How do you break a circle to lead on to the next? Or to form a line? The challenge of flow in contras is more controlled , but there are subtle shifts of flow where the dancers have to direct their own energy. Not every gypsy or do-si-do or star or circle is the same.
