A Short History of Square Dancing Home Callerlab Ethics [ A Short History of Square Dancing ] Media Dancing Tips Dance Classes The following article was found in the archives of MACA (Mid Atlantic Challenge Association). The square dance is an American institution. It began in New England when the first settlers and the immigrant groups that followed, brought with them their various national dances, which we now call folk dances, but which were the popular dances of the day in the countries of their origin - the schottische, the quadrille, the jigs and reels and the minuet, to name a few. After a week of toil in building new homes and carving homes out of virgin forest, the settlers would gather in the community center on Saturday evening and enjoy dancing their old-world favorites. As the communities grew and people of different backgrounds intermingled, so did their dances. As the repertoire increased, it became increasingly difficult for the average person to remember the various movements. In almost any group, however, there would be at least one extrovert, the hail-fellow-well-met, the life-of-the-party type, with a knack for remembering the dance figures. With typical Yankee ingenuity, the settlers let this person cue or prompt them in case they happened to forget what came next. In due course, the prompter (or figure caller, as he became known) acquired a repertoire of various colorful sayings or patter that he could intersperse with the cues. Quite often he would learn the dances of other communities and he would teach them to the group. Some of these men were quite ingenious and developed dances and routines of their own, including dances for groups of four couples. This is the manner in which square dancing and its director (or caller) developed.

Editorial From Bill Boyd I sometimes feel like I have created a controversy when none should exist. The current case in point. While I was at the National Convention in Portland, I mentioned that I felt that we should get back to teaching square dancing. One caller stated that it was easier to call and teach square dancing thirty years ago as there were only about forty calls. I stated that the difference was, with only about forty calls, you had to call them in about two or three thousand combinations to keep your dancers interested and coming back to your dances. Both dancers and callers liked the variety and fun created by knowing how to dance For example, it is far easier for a caller to teach Acey Deucy from standard position than to teach wheel and deal from a variety of positions. Some say new dancers get confused when you call from boy, boy, girl, girl combinations, or lines facing out, or, gasp the girl on the right hand side. I was told that the dancers do not need to learn the definition of a call, only learn to do the call by rote. I ask this caller if he even ever explained to his dancers the concept of leaders and trailers, his reply was, “No, that if you just told the dancers to follow someone or move forward that was all they needed to know.”

A New Song and Dance Routine
America's Favorite Pastime
It's A Party ...
Square dancing is party time every time you do it. Square dancing brings people together for fun and fellowship-even when learning how. The fun starts right on the very first night. You meet new people and make new friends. And the fun keeps right on going as long as you do-most square dance groups meet once a week. It's a wonderful way to share common interests with other people, and to escape the worry and pressures of today's busy world.
It's a Challenge...
Modern square dancing is a mental and physical challenge. It is dancing, it is thinking, it is teamwork. You can't do it by one's or two's. Moving in rhythm to the music keeps you physically fit. Reacting quickly to the square dance caller's calls keeps you mentally on your toes. And your team of eight dancers depends on you to keep those toes moving.
Learning the basic steps is easy. Experienced square dance callers teach you the moves and the names of the calls that you dance. You practice those moves until they feel as natural as walking. Then even more fun begins as you join a dub. Your square dance caller combines the basic moves and steps into whole dance patterns. You and your teammates follow the calls-each arm turn brings a surprise-and as the pattern concludes all the arm turns bring you back to your partner.
It's American Folk Art, too...

http://www.mixed-up.com/quads/articles/etiquette.html
Square Dance Etiquette
by Bill van Melle, October 23, 1994 Here are a few tips on square dance behaviorcustoms peculiar to square dancing, as well as common sense reminders to respect your fellow dancers. When squaring up, if your square needs more dancers, the convention is to hold up fingers indicating the number of couples needed. At a singles club such as ours, you may also see a bent or crossed finger requesting half a couple; however, the usual procedure is to find a partner before trying to form a square.
  • This is somewhat different from the usual convention in gay clubs, where they hold up fingers to indicate the number of individuals required, and you are not always expected to have lined up a partner before squaring up.
After the tip is over, be sure to shake hands with the others in your square and thank them, instead of just walking away. [A tip is the time you spend dancing between breaks. You will find more jargon in this article. If your square breaks down, try not to waste time getting angry at yourself or anyone else. We all make mistakes sometimes, and square dancing is supposed to be fun, after all. If you stop to argue about who messed up, or exactly what went wrong, you'll miss even more calls, and you'll make it harder for the people still dancing to hear the calls. In the same vein, when your neighbor makes an error, do not push or shove him/her back into placebe more subtle. Be sure to square up quickly after you've broken downthis allows the caller to easily see that you're not dancing, and he'll try to get the other squares back home quickly so you can resume dancing. This may also inspire him to explain the troublesome call more carefully, but if not, wait until the next break and ask somebody.

Some people just don't get it.
Introduction
Modern Western square dance clubs are coordinating across the U.S. to have square dancing declared the state folk dance of all fifty states. At the time of this writing, there are twenty-two states that have passed legislation designating square dance as the "state folk dance." Many of these bills were passed after 1988, which was the last time that a bill was in the U.S. Congress to designate square dancing as the national folk dance. It appears that having failed on a national level, modern Western square dancers are trying to accomplish the same thing on a state by state basis. By contrast, traditional square dances are usually open to any member of the community, with no membership or certification required. Since most traditional communities get by with no more than a few dozen calls in their repertoire, lessons are not required, although some dances may feature a short workshop before the dance or "walk throughs" during the dance itself. The dancers wear street clothes, not square dance costumes. Finally, true folk dances are always linked to a folk music tradition. Recorded music is a rarity at traditional dances.
