22. DANCING PEOPLE
Essay on the introduction of square dancing to the people of Nagasaki in 1946 and its increase of social mixing between sexes and cultures.
http://www.uwosh.edu/home_pages/faculty_staff/earns/niblo.html
'DANCING PEOPLE ARE HAPPY PEOPLE': SQUARE DANCING AND DEMOCRACY IN OCCUPIED JAPAN Lane Earns
Of the many initiatives that grew out of American efforts to "democratize" Japan during the early stages of the Occupation Period following World War Two, one of the most innovative is attributed to Winfield P. Niblo, the Chief Education Officer of the Nagasaki Military Government Team from September 1946 to October 1948. It was Niblo, calling upon his personal involvement in square dancing, who determined that this American folk dance could serve as a popular vehicle for co-education and democracy in Japan. It has been nearly half a century since Niblo arrived in Nagasaki to assume his duties as Civilian Education Officer for the N.M.G.T. with headquarters at Katafuchi-machi. Prior to the war he had served as a high school social studies teacher in Denver, Colorado. Upon entering the U.S. Army in 1942 at age thirty, he trained as first a Field Artillery Officer and later as a Special Agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps. By the time he arrived in Yokohama in December 1945 the war had ended. After serving less than a year with the C.I.C. in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Saitama, Niblo became eligible for discharge and accepted a civilian job with the Army as Provincial Education Officer in Nagasaki. The self-proclaimed middle-class school teacher from Denver was extremely impressed by Japanese culture and the country's high level of educational achievement. "I was young and energetic, and...the more I observed and experienced life in Nagasaki, the greater became my admiration and appreciation for its people."

23. Ralph McNair Dies; Executive, Polka Champion

    38. History Of Square Dancing In Wisconsin, 1948-1998
Aggi Thurner s History of Square Dance in Wisconsin covers the growth of square dance over the past 50 years. Get your copy today!
    http://www.celticgraphics.com/aggi/
Square dancing in Wisconsin? Of course! Even before statehood "sets-in-order" was a familiar sound. People from almost every European country arrived in America during our first 200 years. They brought with them their customs, skills, and dances. Early settlers from the eastern states and New England brought the house party and the barn dance to the Midwest. As they traveled across the country, migrating from one city to another, the different dance movements blended together. When the square dance Association of Wisconsin was founded, on the 100th anniversary of statehood, square dancing was in a strong period of growth. In the 1980's, President Reagan signed a document proclaiming the square dance as the Folk Dance of America. Because square dancing integrates and encompasses almost every ethnic culture, people the world over have come to know square dancing as "America's Dance." Square dancing has many positive elements. In addition to the fun, friendship, and feeling of physical well-being that dancers experience, square dancing offers challenge and teamwork - eight individuals all doing their part to bring the dance to a successful conclusion, each one an essential part of the square. And at the end of a tip, when the dancers join hands to bow to the others in their square, they are saying "We did it together - thanks for being there!" Square Dancing in Wisconsin is an anthology created by Aggi Thurner for the sesquicentennial celebration of Wisconsin's statehood. A project of over two years in the making, Aggi collected the thoughts and reminiscences of Wisconsin callers and dancers to provide a rich tapestry of the development and growth of square dancing in this state. Copies of this book are currently in the collection of the Wisconsin State Historical Society, and in many public libraries around the state. Now
