City water ugly but safe
The city water supply may appear to have a brownish discoloration and an off flavor, but that water remains within Alaska Dept. of Environmental Conservation guidelines for safe consumption, City Manager Kurt Reynertson confirmed in an interview today. Although the source of the problem has not been pinned down, the city is participating in an enhanced testing schedule to monitor the supply safety and plans to continue to do so until the problem is alleviated or abates on its own. Although the city's Public Works crew is currently evaluating the water piping down from the reservoir and will repair it if leaks are detected, the other potential problem, algal infestation, may be less susceptible to intervention. The warm summer and low rainfall have provided an hospitable growth environment for algae that is unlikely to change until colder water kills them off. Seldovia would not be alone in facing algal problems, Reynertson said: Homer is presently fighting algal growth of such magnitude that their filtration system has repeatedly been plugging up. At the reservoir, he said, the bloom can be detected in the "weak coffee" coloration in what should otherwise be clear water. Although Seldovia's water has been demonstrated to be safe for consumption, that assurance comes at a hefty price. The city has been directed by

At the request of Governor Sonny Perdue, Chickamauga City Schools is declaring "early snow days" on Monday, September 26, and Tuesday, September 27. These holidays are intended to conserve hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel statewide and allow for further energy conservation from heating and cooling savings. All school activities scheduled for Monday and Tuesday have been cancelled or postponed. Chickamauga City Schools will still observe the planned fall break on Friday, September 30, and Monday, October 3.
Centennial Celebration held
The Centennial Celebration of the Chickamauga City School System was held August 6 on the Gordon Lee High School football field. Faculty, staff, alumni, and friends joined together to celebrate and commemorate one hundred years of educational excellences. The ceremony included the dedications of a new flagpole, the new "Trojan Walk", and a memorial to the fallen sons and daughters of the Chickamauga City Schools. The event concluded with the placement of a time capsule in the wall of the GLHS gym. An open house was held in each of the system's schools following the ceremony.

Elizabethan England Elizabethan Sports by Gretchen Elaine Maxwell and Alan Ryan Carey Elizabethan England embraced many different customs and cultures. The customs that had the greatest effect on the rest of the world were the games of war that consumed spare time. Games of war varied from hunting, with hawks or dogs , to equestrian activities, including tournament jousts and tilts. Most of the sports of the Elizabethan era were carried over from the Medieval period. Hunting was a favorite pastime for people, especially rich people. Queen Elizabeth herself loved to hunt. The hunt allowed the rich nobles to show off their fine horses, hawks, clothing, and weapons. Horses were shown off by their breeding, most commonly by nobles, and ranked by endurance, speed, beauty, and strength. From the hunting rounds the wealthy would often establish a breeding tree of some sort in an attempt to create the perfect breed. Many clothing fashions were established during the hunting trips. Often a noble would arrive garbed in a new outfit which the wealthy and under class surrounding the hunt would emulate, thus spreading the style. New weaponry also appeared at such events. One such case was the adapted new arrow head that was eventually used to fell knights, due to its armor-piercing capabilities. Hawking, otherwise known as falconry, was the sport of royalty. It was said that this was a reference to the stateliness of the birds, but it was a royal sport mainly because commoners could not afford to train the birds. They could not afford any other aspect of the sport, for that matter. The eagle was a bird reserved solely for the King and Queen, but there were no other restrictions placed upon the birds species. As was the case with the horses, there was a slight attempt to breed hawks, but interaction primarily fell upon trading, rather than breeding.
