Georgia State Athletics History This is Atlanta Georgia State has a 17-sport Division I athletics program at the highest level of NCAA competition. Georgia State sports teams have won 18 conference titles and earned 13 NCAA bids in the five years. For the past 21 years, the Panthers have been in the same conference. But, Georgia State will be moving up to the 12-member Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) on July 1, 2005. They joined the TAAC (Trans America Athletic Conference) which changed its named to Atlantic Sun (A-Sun) in July, 2001. The Conference receives automatic bids to all NCAA Championship Tournaments. In 1963-64, Georgia State became a fully accredited NCAA Division I athletics program, giving scholarships for the first time to students to compete at the highest collegiate level possible. Competing as an "Independent" and not affiliated with any conference, the Georgia State athletics program consisted of four sports: men's basketball, cross country, golf, and tennis. Basketball games were played off campus at O'Keefe, Grady and Sylvan High Schools. Gradually, the program grew to include men's soccer (1968). Baseball began in the 1960's on a smaller scale, but was later dropped before being re-established. All the teams struggled to win against major competition, emphasized by the men's basketball team having the worst won-loss percentage in all college sports over the first 30 years of the program.
