Thousands of companies and individuals throughout the world rely on General Steel buildings for anything from small storage buildings to giant sports arenas. If you want a quality steel building system from a proven industry leader, look no further than General Steel. Steel Building from General Steel Survives Hurricane Katrina The devastation that Hurricane Katrina left in its wake is seen in the loss of life and property that reached record proportions never before seen on U.S. soil. Amidst the chaos and destruction, however, there is a story of survival against all odds. A General Steel building in Lumberton , Mississippi absorbed the full fury of Katrina and stands as the only undamaged building in this small Southern town, while all other structures in this community have either been obliterated or heavily compromised. The story of the survival of this building, and the family that operates a video store out of this structure, is both a tribute and underscoring of the quality of General Steel products and the resilience of the American spirit. Sports Sports in Austria is carried on both competitively and as a leisure activity; it also forms part of the school curriculum. As regards competitive sports, Austria rates very highly at an international level, both in terms of top performances in various disciplines and of the ratio of active sportsmen and sportswomen to the population as a whole. Leisure-time sports are primarily undertaken for purposes of relaxation and play a major part in maintaining physical fitness and good health. Sports that form a part of the school curriculum encourage young people to play and perform well, and also influence the way in which they will choose to spend their leisure time later on in life. Encouragement of Sports
According to the Austrian Constitution, sports are the responsibility of the federal authorities, too. In 1999 the federal budget allocated ATS 610.4 million to the promotion of sports. Of this sum, ATS 400 million was devoted to specific sports promotion (tax revenue from the pools and sports lotteries) and ATS 210.4 million to general sports promotion. These federal funds also finance sports facilities, e.g. sports hostels, sports schools and a sports center, as well as the training of sports coaches, trainers and teachers. Sports clubs are also assisted through subsidies granted by local authorities. 27,500 Sports Clubs

PLEASE CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY ADDRESS BY RADM TEO CHEE HEAN, MINISTER FOR EDUCATION AND SECOND MINISTER FOR DEFENCE AT THE 44TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE SINGAPORE SCHOOLS SPORTS COUNCILS AT THE PERFORMANCE THEATRE OF VICTORIA JUNIOR COLLEGE ON SATURDAY 11 JANUARY 2003 AT 9.30AM Mr Hawazi Daipi, Parliamentary Secretary  Mr Wong Siew Hoong, Chairman, Singapore Schools Sports Council  Mrs Tan Peng Eng, Chairman, Singapore Primary Schools Sports Council  Ladies and Gentleman 1            I am pleased to join you for the 44th Annual General Meeting of the Singapore Schools Sports Councils.
Let me begin by congratulating all the members of the two sports councils and the teachers in the schools for their fine efforts in developing sports in our schools. The Primary and Secondary Schools Sports Councils have, once again, been successful in organising sports and developing excellence among our pupils.  Pupils' Participation in Sports  2            Each year, the two Schools Sports Councils organize 23 National Competitions for Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges, and 16 for Primary schools. The number of secondary school pupils participating in the 23 sports has increased from 25,000 in 1997 to over 32,000 in 2002. The number of primary school pupils participating has increased from 18,000 to over 20,000. These increases in participation are certainly significant and encouraging.

Management of Sport Schools
Sport events . The sports schools, interest-based education centres and general education schools of Riga organise sports camps during school holidays. There are outdoor camps open to all school age children and young people, but there are also camps for individual and team sports. Sports activities for children, students and young people in Riga are coordinated by the sports organisers of the city's districts and neighbourhoods, working together with sports instructors and sports school trainers. The goal is to involve as many children and young people as possible, to organise sports activities at schools, and to ensure the participation of schoolchildren and young people in city and national sports events. Each year more than 150 competitions and youth championships for children and young people are organised. The department also organises a contest that is called "The Best Children's and Adolescents' Sports Club or Organisation in Riga". The aim is to promote the involvement of children and adolescents in sports and to promote the participation of the most talented of these youngsters in international competitions. The contest is open to non-governmental organisations and sports clubs. The winning organisation receives financial support.

Starting in February, any school with a nickname or logo considered racially or ethnically "hostile" or "abusive" by the NCAA would be prohibited from using them in postseason events. Mascots will not be allowed to perform at tournament games, and band members and cheerleaders will also be barred from using American Indians on their uniforms beginning in 2008. Major college football teams are not subject to the ban because there is no official NCAA tournament. Affected schools were quick to complain, and Florida State home of the Seminoles threatened legal action.

    General Observations
Oct 1999 Is there a web site that lists the ranking of Oakland Public schools, particularly elementary? I went to the Oakland Unified site and couldn't find anything there. The October 26 advice given column had a message stating that Montclair, Hillcrest, Chabot, Thornhill, Juaquin and Miller schools were the highest ranked of the 90 Oakland public schools. I would like to see more information on how they determine these rankings, by test scores, or grades, or what. Not surprisingly, there is no link to such information on the Oakland Unified School district website that you listed: http://www.ousd.k12.ca.us/
Is there another website where one can look, or is this information available through other sources, such as the local news agencies?
The following site does not strictly rank schools, but has a lot of information on individual Bay Area public schools. By just plugging in a school name, district or your zip code, you can find out a particular school's test scores, number and experience of teachers, ethnicity of students and faculty, number of computers in the school, etc. Also, what's nice about the site is that it has information and advice about *not* judging a school strictly by test scores or other "objective" criteria. www.greatschools.net OUSD has recently redesigned it's web site so the "school finder" which had a statistical snapshot of the school is no longer there. There is a state web site: http://star.cde.ca.gov/star99/AC97star.html which requires you to download a file in various database formats. In addition, last week, there was a supplement to the Oakland Trib which had all of the schools test scores. However, as a Redwood Heights parent (and someone who pays attention to these things) I can tell you Redwood Heights is in the second tier of Oakland Public Schools, It's test scores show that 77% of the children perform above the "proficiency level" in reading at both the 2nd and 5th grades and slightly less than that in Math. Best test scores are (I believe in order, but I might have it slighltly skewed)
