[Journal Links: Subscribe Online I Issues I Submissions I Masthead I Contact us I In its second year, the Willamette Sports Law Journal is continuing to develop the Northwest's first sports law journal. In order to get the publication off the ground the journal will only be accessible online. It is our goal to turn the journal into a printed publication that is a leader in sports information not only in the Northwest, but across the nation. We anticipate that the journal's articles will be written by Sports Law Society members, students in the Willamette Sports Law Class, in addition to practitioners and educators in the field. The first issue contains papers on the following: liability for the golf courses design; stadium financing and its tax implications; and Title IX - how the Act inadequately protects women and unfairly burdens men. Finally, as the Maurice Clarett situation unfolds it is our intention to solicit a piece on the potential anti-trust violations; and whether the labor exemption protects the NFL's player eligibility rule. The 2003-2004 school year was an exciting one for the newly formed Willamette Sports Law Society. In its first year, the Society has achieved remarkable success. Our efforts were, and continue to be, aimed at increasing awareness of the rapidly growing sports law industry through Sports Law Conferences, Sports Law Classes, and Willamette's brand new Sports Law Journal. As an industry, sports fuel billions of dollars through the economy every year with lawyers becoming an increasingly integral part of the economic success of the industry. Sports law is a combination of different types of law such as intellectual property, contracts, antitrust law, labor law, and dispute resolution fields, such as arbitration and negotiation. For those students interested in pursuing a career in this compelling industry, the Willamette Sports Law Society strives to provide an outlet that previously did not exist at Willamette. Our goal is to increase the exposure of our members and the student body as a whole to different experiences that will increase their knowledge regarding the intricacies of sports and law, and how as future lawyers we can contribute to this industry. It is the Sports Law Society's goal to cultivate student awareness in Sports Law through informational sessions with members of the industry, shared information from sports law conferences and practical experience through mock competitions.

About Us Alerts Actions ... Contact Us League of Fans Founded by Ralph Nader, League of Fans is a sports reform project working to improve sports by increasing awareness of the sports industry's relationship to society, exposing irresponsible business practices, ensuring accountability to fans, and encouraging the industry to contribute to societal well-being. Email Alerts Alerts is League of Fans' email announcements list. Alerts provides news, information, the actions of League of Fans and/or Ralph Nader regarding sports issues, and calls-to-action for subscribers. All email updates are either selected or written by League of Fans. Actions! League of Fans is motivated by people, just like you, who are upset with what has become of our sports and would like to make a difference. We work with concerned citizens, sports fans, civic groups and communities to increase awareness of the sports industry's relationship to society, influence a broad range of issues in sports at all levels and encourage the cooperative capacities that make the "sports powers-that-be" capable of helping, not just dominating, our society and culture. News Resources We often think of sports as outside the realm of everyday citizen concern. But the many benefits to society that sports can provide are sometimes undermined by a different set of values, often based on the quest for higher and higher profits at the expense of fans, taxpayers, communities, culture and social justice.

http://www2.msstate.edu/~jag/intro.htm
What is Sports Law?
Sports law is the application of various areas of the law to a specific industrythe sports industry. The application of the law to sports has in many instances created new and difficult legal issues for judges, lawyers, and athletic administrators. These legal issues have created the need for and - in some instances- produced federal and state legislation specific to athletics. In addition, these unique issues have required the promulgation of rules, regulations, and legal documents pertaining specifically to athletics. The study of sports law is a relatively new field. The first sports law course was offered in 1972 by Professor Robert C. Berry at Boston College Law School. Titled "Regulation of Professional Athletics," the course reflected the fact that most of the sports law issues in 1972 dealt with professional sports. By the end of the 1980's, amateur sports law issues and cases had become as prevalent as professional sports law issues. In the time since Berry's initial sports law course, many law schools and sport management programs have integrated sports law into their curricula. This trend will probably continue into the 1990's, because the increased monetary stakes in the sport industry have propelled all facets of athletics toward a businesslike approach. Sports law has become increasingly important for sport management personnel. This is evident in that many important leadership positions in athletics are held by lawyers. For example, three current commissioners of professional sports teams are attorneys: David Stern in the NBA, Gary Bettman in the NHL, and Paul Tagilabue in the NFL. Several general mangers of professional sports franchises, college conference commissioners, and athletic directors are also attorneys.
