The Most Politically Charged Event in Sports History
A New Documentary Revisits the 1938 Louis-Schmeling Fight
By DAVID DAVIS Some 66 years later, director Barak Goodman has revisited what journalist David Margolick calls "the most politically charged event in the history of sports." Goodman's documentary about the Louis-Schmeling bout, entitled "The Fight," premieres this month at the Sundance Film Festival. It will air on the PBS series "American Experience" in 2005. (Margolick's companion book is scheduled to be published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2005.) Born in Berkeley, Calif., and raised in Philadelphia, the 40-year-old Goodman graduated from Harvard University and Columbia University Journalism School. He worked briefly at Newsday before deciding to make documentaries. In the 1995 Emmy-nominated "Daley: The Last Boss," he profiled the career of former Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley. Soon after, he and his wife, "Frontline" producer Rachel Dretzin, teamed up to make "Failure to Protect," a two-part series about child protection services in Maine, and the Peabody Award-winning documentary "The Lost Children of Rockdale County" (1999), about teens' disaffection in an Atlanta suburb. They also produced "The Merchants of Cool" (2001), about teen consumers and the marketers who target them, and are currently working on a documentary about the pioneer sex researcher Alfred Kinsey. "I'm fascinated by the bonds between Jews and African-Americans," Goodman said, in an interview with the Forward. "Both the Scottsboro trial and Louis-Schmeling galvanized anti-Fascist, anti-racist movements at a time when there was little else bringing them together."

SPORTS Friday Nights in America DVD
More people attend high school football games than all pro and college games combined. This program takes the fascinating journey to discover why these games remain America's most popular event. The program contains behind-the-scenes footage at Permian High School (the feature film Friday Night Lights is based on this school) in Odessa, Texas, De La Salle High School (they had a 156 game winning streak) in Concord, CA, Pahokee High School ("Muck Bowl") in Florida, Hawkinsville High in rural Georgia and Woodland Hills High, Sto-Rox High and the disappearing town of Braddock in western PA. This program is a "must see" film for anyone who has ever played the game or simply holds a love for the event.
This film captures the powerful historical drama of America's "Steel City," the proud and distinct heritage of western Pennsylvania, and the community's undying love for the game of football.

St. Louis boasts rich sports history
Sporting around town
By Steve Harrell Published: Monday, August 18, 2003 Media Credit: Mike Sherwin The Savvis Center is one of the popular sports venues in St. Louis. It has seen many famous hockey players skate through, including Brett Hull, Wayne Gretzky, Brendan Shanahan, Curtis Joseph, Steve Duchesne and Phil Housley. Everybody needs to get away from the rigors of their studies now and again, and one good way to take your mind off of your schoolwork is through athletics. While UM-St. Louis fields 11 varsity teams, all of which can be very entertaining, sometimes you want to see the big boys play. Well, fear not; the city of St. Louis has plenty of options for the sports-minded person. One can't-miss spot, if you've never been, is legendary Busch Stadium. Serving as the home of the St. Louis Cardinals since 1966, Busch Stadium is the fifth oldest park in Major League Baseball, behind Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium. Busch Stadium has been witness to a lot of baseball history. The stadium hosted the All-Star Game in 1966, its first year of existence. It didn't take long to see the Redbirds win a World Championship, either. St. Louis won the World Series 4-3 over the Boston Red Sox in 1967. The following year saw current Hall of Famer Bob Gibson post a modern day record with a 1.12 ERA.

"At Play in the Fields of the Scoreboard " A history of the Hub's sports grounds. By Magdalena Hernandez Boston's Ballparks and Arenas, by Alan E. Foulds (Northeastern University Press, Boston; published by the University Press of New England, Hanover, New Hampshire; 2005; 221 pages; $24.95) All roads lead to Northeastern. Or maybe it just sometimes seems that way in Boston. Though several area schools trump NU in age, the university is tightly woven into the fabric of the city's history. In fact, Boston's professional sports history had its start in our own backyard. Or, to be more exact, underneath our parking garage. Northeastern's campus was once home to no fewer than three of Boston's major playing fields: the South End Grounds (aforementioned cradle, in 1871, of Beantown's pro sports), the Huntington Avenue Grounds, and the Boston Arena (better known to current Huskies as Matthews Arena). The ties between gown and town extend to the present, says Alan E. Foulds in his new book, Boston's Ballparks and Arenas. As he points out, "These venues were the birthplaces of nine major-league teams, five of which still exist today."
