Resource Guide to Sports History
Introduction
It is only in the last twenty years that sport has been appreciated as the stuff of serious history. Sports history grew out of the social history movement of the 1960s that began to look at the past from 'below' by considering the histories of groups, such as women and the working class, that were usually submerged within conventional historical narratives. Although it sometimes struggles for recognition in some of the more traditional echelons of the subject, sports history is now a thriving sub-discipline which produces research that makes important contributions to the social history of Britain and its associated debates and questions. Sports history is not just a matter of looking at how sport reflects society. Sport itself is an active agent in the world we live in and thus the relationship between sport and society is a complex two-way process. The historian Jack Williams (ref: #78) pointed out that more people may have attended religious services or the pictures but no single church or cinema could boast as many as attendees as a professional football match. As such, sport was an integral element of urban life across Britain. History must strive to capture what was important to the people who lived it. Sport, of course, has not mattered to everyone in society, either today or in the past. But the fact that it has been an important part of many people's lives is reason alone to justify its historical study.

Sports / Sports history Sports history The first known information about sporting activity in Liechtenstein concerned shooting. Liechtenstein's first shooting ordinance of 1789 is preserved, as well as a membership register from 1802. In addition to these shooting societies, which were likely also engaged in sports, but actually pursued other primary goals, the first sporting activities concerned skiing, gymnastics, cycling, tennis, motor sport, and football. The Princely Hunter Master Josef Negele (Rotenboden) can be considered one of the first skiers, since he was given skis from Tyrol by the Princely Forestry Inspector. As a support, he used the alpenstock in fashion at the time, soap as ski wax, and trouser braces instead of furs as ties. As he skied down the Balischgut for the first time in 1895, the baffled witnesses proclaimed, "The son of the hunter Toni is crazy, he has boards on his feet!" A further pioneer was the artist Friedrich Kaufmann, who skied the Malbun Valley for the first time in 1910, for eight days. Many people regarded him as a "crazy person" or a "useless student". Even before the first actual ski association, the "Liechtenstein Ski Club" founded 1926 in Vaduz, there apparently was a "Samina Ski Club". The Liechtenstein Ski Club, reorganized 1931 in Schaan, joined together with the Triesenberg Ski Club in 1936 to form an association.

History of Emerging Sports
NCAA surveys its member institutions' expenditures for women's and men's athletics programs. Study results show undergraduate enrollment is about even (50/50), but male students constitute about 70 percent of the participants in intercollegiate athletics, their programs receive about 70 percent of athletics scholarship funds, 77 percent of operating budgets and 83 percent of recruiting funds. In response to the 1991 survey results, the NCAA Gender-Equity Task Force is established. The final report of the Gender-Equity Task Force is published. The Task Force recommends institutional standards and NCAA regulations to help achieve gender equity. Nine "emerging"sports (five team and four individual sports) are identified. The NCAA principle of gender equity is adopted at the NCAA Convention to create greater participation opportunities. Financial aid legislation and minimum contests and participants required for sports sponsorships applicable to emerging sports programs become effective. Amateurism legislation, seasons of competition legislation and awards and benefits legislation applicable to emerging sports programs become effective.

September 25 Providence and Worcester played in baseball's first doubleheader. The Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings were granted NHL franchises. The Cleveland Indians, behind Early Wynn's eight no-hit innings, destroyed the Detroit Tigers, 11-1 for an American League record 111th win of the season. It passed the total previously held by the 1927 New York Yankees. Sal "The Barber" Maglie pitched a no-hitter as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-0. Casey Stengel notched his 10th and final American League Pennant as manager of the New York Yankees with a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. Sonny Liston KO'd Floyd Patterson in the first round to win the world heavyweight title at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Satchel Paige became the oldest player to ever perform in a major league game at the age of 60. He hurled three scoreless innings for Kansas City against the Boston Red Sox and gave up just one hit, a single to Carl Yastrzemski. A total of 53,000 fans turned out at Shea Stadium to pay a final tribute to future Hall-of-Famer and baseball's third best home run hitter of all-time, Willie Mays.

Sports History? Sports Archives!
By Cristina Bianchi, Archivist Olympic Museum, Lusanne Journal of Olympic History Volume 7, No.1, Winter 1999 The scarcity of professional literature about sports archives confirms what I have noticed since I entered the world of sports through the International Olympic Committee and its Olympic Museum, both located in Lausanne, Switzerland. The awareness of the richness that sports and Olympic archives can bring to an institution, a sports club or an amateur organizing committee is only emerging nowadays, with all the gaps and losses it implies. The concept of "archival obscurity" that Richard Fagan uses for Australia can be applied to many countries in that respect: "trying to compile information on sports archives is somewhat akin to hitting the metaphorical wall of the marathon runner ."

NEW YORK: Larry Brown was confirmed on Thursday as the new coach of the New York Knicks, with a reported five-year deal that makes him the highest-paid coach in North American professional sports' history. New York Knicks new head coach Larry Brown (left) speaks as Knicks President of Basketball Operations Isiah Thomas looks on at a news conference to announce Brown's hiring at Madison Square Garden in New York on Thursday. Brown, who has coached 22 seasons in the NBA, coached the Detroit Pistons to the NBA title in 2003-04. [Reuters] Brown's new National Basketball Association deal, according to reports in several newspapers, is worth between US$50 million and US$60 million. The much-travelled Brown, a New York native who turns 65 next month, came home to obtain what he once called his "dream job", having idolized the Knicks since their most recent NBA championship back in 1973. Brown vowed that this, his 11th coaching career stop and record eighth different NBA team, will be his final head coaching job.

Storming the Castle: Why We Need to Know Our Radical Sports History
By Dave Zirin
In High School, I was a 5' 10" inch center for the fearsome Friends Seminary Quakers in New York City. It wasn't pretty, but I lived for it and didn't care if the opposing center could spit on my head. I just loved sports. My walls were shrines to Magic Johnson, Lawrence Taylor, and Keith Hernandez. Every stat, every record, and every rule existed only to be memorized. Weekends were for playing ball until sunset.
