DISCUSSION BOARD: Talk about Penn State Football
TOP STORY Amid the mistakes, Penn State prevailed
By Jeff Rice, jrice@centredaily.com
Larry Johnson grabbed a knee with each hand, bowing his head toward the Ryan Field sideline and holding it there for several long seconds. The Penn State defensive line coach, who also happens to be in charge of punt returns, had just watched Northwestern extend a third-quarter drive on a fake punt, not the first and not the last of a long and diverse list of Nittany Lion mistakes Saturday. College to honor athletic notables
ARC will pay tribute to 50 ex-coaches or players who made a difference.
By Bill Lindelof Bee Staff Writer
A small American River College selection committee has the difficult job this week of picking 50 athletes or coaches from the community college who have made a difference over the past half century. "It is going to be tough deciding who makes up the 'Fantastic 50,' " said Matt Davis, American River College's sports information director. There would seem to be some easy selections: swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Debbie Meyer, National Football League players Tony Eason and Gerald Willhite. "There are probably 20 or 30 who are obvious choices," said Davis. There are more than 150 other nominees to consider.

Sac State/UC Davis notes: Preseason polls pick Hornets at bottom
By Jimmy Spencer Bee Sports Staff
Sacramento State football was picked to finish in a last-place tie with Weber State by both the Big Sky's media and coaches preseason polls released Monday. Both polls predicted Eastern Washington to finish first in the eight-team conference, ahead of second-place Montana. The Eagles and Grizzlies were last year's co-champions, each finishing 6-1. Sac State was predicted to finish seventh in both of last year's preseason polls, and did so following a 2-5 conference mark. Complete rankings can be found on page C7. The Hornets open their season Sept. 3 at Cal. Men's basketball - Lorenzo Watkins, following a successful four-year tenure as head coach at Indian Hills Community College, has been hired as an assistant coach to the Sac State program. From 2001-05, Watkins built a 94-36 record at the Ottumwa, Iowa, community college that was ranked in the national preseason top 10 in 2001 and 2003.
