From the gyms of middle America to the Olympic arena in Athens, Greece, MURDERBALL tells the story of a group of world-class athletes unlike any ever shown on screen. In addition to smashing chairs, it will smash every stereotype you ever had about the disabled. It is a film about family, revenge, honor, sex (yes, they can) and the triumph of love over loss. But most of all, it is a film about standing up, even after your spirit - and your spine - has been crushed.
Played in armored wheelchairs worthy of Mad Max, quad rugby (aka “Murderball”) is a no-holds-barred, highly competitive, physically violent sport whose competitors are quadriplegics. Whether by car wreck, fist fight, gun shot or rogue bacteria, these men are forced to live life sitting down. But in their own version of the full-contact sport, they smash the hell out of each other in custom-made, gladiator-like wheelchairs. And they don’t wear helmets! Co-directors Henry Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro uncover uncommon humanity at the core of men who shatter handicapped stereotypes and exemplify determination in the face of extraordinary obstacles. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival.

Mount Sinai Spinal Cord Injury Model System
Highlights he Mount Sinai Spinal Cord Injury Model System (MS-SCI-MS) provides comprehensive care to meet the diverse needs of persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). Components of this care include treatment at the scene of the accident, acute medical and surgical care, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and facilitation of community reintegration. The MS-SCI-MS is one of sixteen Model Systems for care of persons with SCI funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, US Department of Education (grant #H133N000027). It is the only such funded Model System in New York State . A Model System is a system of care selected by the federal government to demonstrate exemplary care, serve as a model for other service providers, and perform research, training and education, demonstration and evaluation activities that improve outcomes of care. Studies show that early transfer to a Model System of Care results in decreased lengths of stay, fewer medical complications, and reduced costs of care, immediately after onset and long-term. MS-SCI-MS collaborates with the other SCI Model Systems nationwide in improving patient care, developing and evaluating new medical, rehabilitative and other treatments, researching the course of SCI, and educating patients, family members, health care professionals, and the public at large on the consequences and management of SCI.

Spinal Cord Injury A spinal cord injury occurs every 49 minutes. Approximately 2 million people live with a spinal cord injury and there are 11,000 new spinal cord injuries reported every year.
Spinal Cord Injury Costs
Spinal cord injuries are very costly. Initial hospitalization and rehabilitation costs are almost $250,000 for each person. Additional lifetime costs average $400,000 and can reach as high as $2.1 million, depending on the level of injury. A spinal cord injury is most commonly caused by car accidents, violence, falls and sports. Spinal cord injuries result in sensory and/or motor impairment - affecting the spinal cord's ability to send and receive messages from the brain. These messages normally go to the systems that control motor, sensory, and autonomic (involuntary) functions. A spinal cord injury can occur from trauma to the vertebral column, or from trauma to the spinal cord itself. In addition to movement and feeling, a spinal cord injury affects other bodily functions, such as breathing, bowel and bladder control.

OT Search Living With Spinal Cord Injury A spinal cord injury (SCI) can result from trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident, violence, or a fall; or a disease or disorder, such as a tumor or virus, that affects the spinal cord's ability to send and receive messages to and from the brain. About 200,000 people in the United States have spinal cord injuries. Most injuries occur from a traumatic event, according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, and most of these injuries occur in men. A person with SCI typically has some paralysis and decreased or loss of sensation below the level of injury. Depending on the severity of a person's spinal cord injury, an occupational therapist can provide treatment in a hospital, clinic, or at home that allows the person to become as independent as possible. With proper treatment, thousands of people with SCI have continued to lead happy and productive lives. *(PDF File - Requires Adobe Reader) What can an occupational therapist do?

Jefferson, in affiliation with the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, is designated as one of the nation's 16 Model Spinal Cord Injury Centers by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) in the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS), and the only one in the Delaware Valley. The center, which has treated more than 3,000 persons with spinal cord injury, provides for the multidisciplinary coordination of emergency and acute medical/surgical care, rehabilitation beginning at the onset of acute care, vocational- evaluation and training, and lifetime follow-up care for persons with spinal cord injury. With over 50 percent of persons with spinal cord injury admitted within three days of injury, the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center has demonstrated a mortality rate of 5 percent and has significantly reduced the severe secondary complications of traumatic spinal cord injury. Mental health following stroke, spinal cord injury; sensory evaluation tools
The current issue of the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (JRRD) includes articles that focus on interpersonal aspects of stroke rehabilitation, depression following stroke, stress and spinal cord injury, detection and treatment of diabetic ulcers, and sensory and communication evaluation tools. Full-text articles are available, free, online at www.vard.org Stroke patient's hope for physical recovery influenced by relationship with therapist during rehabilitation, pg. 263
This study evaluates the interpersonal aspects of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), analyzing how meaning is negotiated between therapist and patient. Findings suggest that several patterns of behavior are present during therapy sessions: coaching, cheerleading, reminding, changing, and contemplating. These behavior patterns indicate that learned nonuse of an affected limb does not exist in social isolation and that people who participate in CIMT routinely consider the balance of any improvement against the costs of using an affected limb that is still not fully functional. These patterns of social interaction that occur during therapy-which often influence a participant's hope for future physical progress-are an important part of CIMT. One-third of veterans recovering from stroke suffer from depression, pg. 277

Therapeutic Uses Of Stem Cells For Spinal Cord Injuries: A New Hope
Survey of Stem Cell Research and SCI We touch a flame and we feel heat; we close our fingers around a pen to pick it up. How does our body complete these functions? Every sensation, action and thought revolves around the complicated processes of the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is the central computer of our body interpreting outside information and controlling every action. The spinal cord connects the brain with the rest of the body by sending out millions of electrical signals. When there is injury to the spinal and this connection breaks paralysis occurs. As of now spinal cord damage is irreversible, leaving approximately 250,000 Americans in a devastating position. However, in the past 10 years, as stem cell research has developed, new exciting possibilities have arisen for people suffering from spinal cord injury. Before understanding the consequences of a damaged spinal cord it is important to understand how the spinal cord functions. Cells called neurons are responsible for receiving and processing every piece of information the brain sends the rest of the body. Neurons are made up of four parts—the cell body which houses the nucleus and most of the cell organelles, dendrites, an axon, and axon terminals. Dendrites are bush like projections that bring information from other neurons to the cell body. The axon, a longer projection, sends information away form the cell body.
