Craig has treated more than 24,500 patients since 1956 - more spinal cord injury patients than any other single facility in the world. Craig Hospital’s spinal cord injury rehabilitation and traumatic brain injury rehabilitation programs are designated by the U.S. National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) as Model Systems Centers. Spinal cord injuries often leave both the injured individuals and their loved ones in a state of shock. The injuries are sudden and unexpected. Most people have no experience with such an injury. Being in a hospital can be overwhelming. The future may be uncertain and frightening. The Rehabilitation Research Center (RRC) for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) conducts research to better understand and improve outcomes after TBI and SCI. Outcomes studied include the functional, vocational, and life satisfaction areas that are important to people with and without disabilities. The RRC strives to meet the needs of injured persons and their families for information, education, and support. The RRC is located at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. It is funded through grants from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, US Department of Education. This website contains information on the activities of the RRC as well as a large collection of easily accessible online resources, including resource guides, educational materials, newsletters, and bulletin boards. The Northeast Ohio Regional Spinal Cord Injury System (NORSCIS) at MetroHealth Medical Center has been a leader in care for persons with paralysis from spinal cord injury for 30 years. The mission of NORSCIS is to provide comprehensive surgical, rehabilitation and lifetime care to spinal cord injured persons. In September 1995, NORSCIS was awarded a 1.9 million dollar grant from the National Institute for Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and given the status of "Model System" for spinal cord injury care. There are only 18 medical centers in the United States which have been awarded the "Model System" status by NIDRR.

After an accident that left him paralyzed, Michael Brent's friends and family organized Friends for Michael, Inc. (FFM). The group does fundraising events throughout the year to support spinal cord injury research, scholarships for individuals who are paralyzed and much more. Dr. Scott R. Whittemore, Scientific Director of the Kentucky Spinal Cord Injury Research Center (KSCIRC), recently received this years check on behalf of the Centers faculty and staff from Friend's for Michael, Inc. to continue their research work in spinal cord injury. Pictured are Dr. Whittemore, Cindy Norton, President of Friends for Michael, Inc., Michael's mother Linda Berry, and Dr. Stephen Onifer, KSCIRC liaison to FFM. The Center's heartfelt thanks go to Friends for Michael, Inc. for their overall contributions of $48,000 and to all who participated in and continue to support the Friends for Michael, Inc.

The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation (CRPF) is committed to funding research that develops treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. The Foundation also vigorously works to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities through its grants program, paralysis resource center and advocacy efforts. Since 1982, CRPF has awarded $42.5 million in research grants to the world’s best neuroscientists. CRPF grants are catalytic. We support new initiatives, take smart risks, and make sure our research dollars are spent to do the most good. In addition, through our Quality of Life Grants program, CRPF has granted close to $3.5 million since 1999 to nonprofit organizations that help improve the daily lives of people living with paralysis, particularly spinal cord injuries.
