News Updated (09/19/2005) The current issue of the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (JRRD) is dedicated to spinal cord injury and wheelchair technology. Full-text articles are available, free, online at http://www.vard.org Excess weight, push technique contribute to upper limb injury in users of manual wheelchairs This study makes recommendations for wheelchair propulsion and setup that may reduce the risk of developing shoulder and wrist injuries. Over 60 manual wheelchair users with paraplegia propelled their manual wheelchair on a stationary roller system at self-selected, slow, and moderately fast speeds. Participants also underwent extensive medical tests to evaluate upper-limb repetitive strain injuries. Investigators recommend using smooth, long strokes and letting the hand drift below the pushrim when not in contact with the wheel. They warn that weight gain can increase injury risk and suggest using a light-weight wheelchair with a forward-adjusted rear axle to ease propulsion and lessen stress on the upper limbs. SPINAL CORD INJURY STATISTICAL INFORMATION
Although there is more information available about people who have a spinal cord injury than ever before, much of it is incomplete. Some of the statistical data is summarized below. We have very little information about disease-induced spinal cord injury, except brief descriptions of the diseases. The following information relates to traumatic spinal cord injury. It was compiled primarily by researchers at the University of Alabama using data from the regional SCI Centers funded by NIDRR. For more information on spinal cord injury statistics call 205-934-3320the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, Birmingham, Alabama.
NUMBER OF NEW INJURIES PER YEAR
32 injuries per million population or 7800 injuries in the US each year Most researchers feel that these numbers represent significant under- reporting. Injuries not recorded include cases where the patient instantaneously or soon after the injury, cases with little or no remaining neurological deficit, and people who have neurologic problems secondary to trauma, but are not classified as SCI. Researchers estimate that an additional 20 cases per million (4860 per year) die before reaching the hospital.

A spinal cord injury usually begins with a sudden, traumatic blow to the spine that fractures or dislocates vertebrae. The damage begins at the moment of injury when displaced bone fragments, disc material, or ligaments bruise or tear into spinal cord tissue. Most injuries to the spinal cord don't completely sever it. Instead, an injury is more likely to cause fractures and compression of the vertebrae, which then crush and destroy the

HOME SERVICE MY INJURY MY DISABILITY ... E-MAIL F or many years the Greater Manchester Police was a great part of my life. This site outlines my police service. This photo of me was taken the day before I retired from the Greater Manchester Police.
Hello. My name's Graham. I was medically retired from the Greater Manchester Police with just short of 20 years service following a neck injury which occurred whilst on duty. This injury required neurosurgery and I much later discovered that it had left me with a spinal cord injury. I initially built this site as I stopped work with my disability. I have endeavoured to make this page as accessible as possible for disabled people. If anybody has any access problems please let me know and I shall try to correct them. I accepted injury as an occupational hazard. I would rather I wasn't injured, but I accept that I took a risk and lost. A large number of officers are injured and it was a part of the job of which I was well aware. Because of ongoing illness and difficulty typing I had closed this site down but have resurrected it following a large number of enquiries, many from people considering a career in the Police. I do not intend to regularly update it and some of the information may now be outdated. I cannot answer questions from potential recruits as I am now totally out of date with recruiting policies. I would like to express my appreciation to the press both local and national for their assistance in allowing the use of photographs and articles on this site.
