We liaise with other similar voluntary and professional organisation's so that the problems of spinal cord injury are recognised and understood. What services can SIS offer? SIS offers a confidential telephone help line, which is manned by qualified counsellors. We also have Legal and Welfare Advisory Services which deal with more complex issues relating to SCI E.g. queries with housing and benefits etc.

  • What is the spinal cord? Answer: The spinal cord is part of the nervous system and measures approximately 18 inches long. It runs the length of the back, extending from the base of the brain to about the waist. The nerves that branch out from the spinal cord to the other parts of the body are called lower motor neurons (LMNs) and dorsal root sensory neurons. These spinal nerves exit and enter at each vertebral level and communicate with specific areas of the body.
  • What is a spinal cord injury? Answer: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the nerves within the spinal canal. Most SCI's are caused by trauma to the vertebral column, thereby affecting the spinal cord's ability to send and receive messages from the brain to the body's systems that control sensory, motor and autonomic function below the level of injury.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Spinal Cord February, 1999 Spinal cord injuries are most commonly caused by motor vehicle accidents. The next most frequent causes are falls and acts of violence. Sports-related spinal cord injuries occur more commonly in children and teenagers, while work-related injuries (especially from construction work) predominate in adults. Most spinal cord injury patients are in their teens or twenties. Approximately 80% are male. This male preponderance decreases beyond age 65, at which age falls become the most common mechanism of spinal cord injury. More than half of all spinal cord injuries occur in the cervical area, i.e., in the neck. Almost a third occur in the thoracic area (where the ribs attach to the spine). The remainder occur in the lumbar area, i.e., the lower back. TYPES OF SPINAL INJURY Bony or Ligamentous Injury.

Approximately 11,000 Americans sustain an SCI each year (CDC unpublished data).
The leading cause of SCI varies by age. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause among persons under age 65. Among persons age 65 and older, falls cause most SCIs (CDC unpublished data).
Sports and recreation activities cause an estimated 18% of SCI cases (Berkowitz 1998).

    Consequences
Secondary conditions are a major health issue for people living with SCI. Secondary conditions are negative health outcomes that occur as a direct result of a SCI-related disability. The most common secondary conditions are pressure sores, respiratory complications, urinary tract infections, spasticity, and scoliosis (Meyers 2000; McKinley 1999). Cost
    • SCIs cost the nation an estimated $9.7 billion each year (Berkowitz 1998).

    CDC's Accomplishments
    Surveillance begins for SCI

With CDC funding and technical support, seven states—Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah—began collecting data about spinal cord injury (SCI) in 2000. These data will enable CDC to estimate the magnitude and severity of SCI nationally and to assist states in developing and implementing prevention efforts. Prevention education realizes impressive results
Over a one-year period, participants in an CDC-funded intervention experienced a 46% decrease in pressure sore occurrence and a 36% decrease in pressure sore severity. The intervention, part of the Arkansas Spinal Cord Commission's Consumer Action to Prevent Pressure Sores (CAPPS) project, eliminated sores among one-third of the intervention group and saved $660,000 in hospital costs associated with pressure sores. The goal of the CAPPS project was to determine whether in-home education could prevent new pressure sores and reduce the number and severity of existing pressure sores among a rural, underserved population of persons with spinal cord injury.
