The CSBA'S First Annual 5K Walk/Run/Roll
The CSBA is pleased to announce that our First Annual 5K Walk/Run/Roll will be held Sunday, Sept. 30th, 2001. Please note that this is the day after the Annual Fall Conference on Saturday, Sept. 29th. This will be an incredible opportunity to participate in a fun, family event that promotes awareness of spina bifida and celebrates children, teenagers and adults with spina bifida in our community. It's time to get involved... we can't do it without you! Invite your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to participate with your family. You will receive a registration form in the mail in August. Extra forms can be obtained easily to hand out to others. Your pre-registration will help us in the planning process, but walk-in registration will also be accepted on Sunday, Sept. 30th. Details are as follows:
  • PLACE: Washington Park, Denver, CO

yes no Spina bifida is a neural tube defect and is a developmental anomaly which occurs very early in pregnancy. The neural tube develops to form the spinal cord, brain and spine. When Spina Bifida occurs, the tube is split and one or more vertebrae (small bones of the back) fail to form properly, thus leaving a gap. There are three main types of spina bifida. Spina bifida occulta where the only sign of the malformation is a dimple or hair at the site of the defect on the skin of the back. This condition is very mild and is usually symptomless although occasionally there may be continence problems and difficulties with mobility. In Spina bifida cystica a sac or cyst is visible on the back covered by a thin layer of skin. There are two forms: a meningocele and a myelomeningocele. In a meningocele the sac contains tissues which cover the spinal cord and cerebro-spinal fluid. The nerves are not normally badly damaged and there is little or no malfunction. This is the least common form of spina bifida. Myelomeningocele is the most common and severest form and is characterised by the inclusion in the sac of nerves and part of the spinal cord as well as tissue and cerebral-spinal fluid. Some degree of paralysis and loss of sensation occur below the site of the defect. The extent of the disability is dependent upon the extent of nerve damage.

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the primary characteristic is excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. Although hydrocephalus was once known as "water on the brain". The "water" is actually cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) - a clear fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The excessive accumulation of CSF results in an abnormal dilation of the spaces in the brain called ventricles. This dilation causes potentially harmful pressure on the tissues of the brain. What are the different types of hydrocephalus?

Spina bifida
Dr Trisha Macnair Dr Rob Hicks At its worse, spina bifida can have devastating effects. But by simply taking a supplement before and during pregnancy, the risk can be reduced by 70 per cent.
In this article
What is it? Symptoms Treatment Prevention
What is it?
Spina bifida means 'split spine'. There are 33 vertebrae in the spine; if one or more of these don't form properly in early pregnancy, the nerves in the spine may be unprotected, leading to damage of the central nervous system. This damage may cause mobility difficulties, bladder and bowel problems and, in more severe cases, paralysis below the affected part of the spine. Disruption of the nervous system depends on how high up the spine the problem lies and how well the spinal cord below the defect works.
Symptoms
In spina bifida occulta , which affects up to one in ten people, there may be visible signs of a dimple or small hair growth on the back. This is a mild form and rarely causes disability. In spina bifida cystica there is a sac or cyst (like a blister) on the back, covered by a thin layer of skin. The sac contains tissues that cover the spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid and sometimes even the nerves and tissues of the spinal cord itself.

Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute - Pediatric Neurosurgery
Pediatric Neurosurgery Program The Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute recognizes that the prospect of neurosurgery on an infant or child is physically and emotionally trying for patients and their families. As such, the Institute has brought together a specialized team for the treatment of pediatric brain tumors, as well as other nervous system disorders, such as congenital malformations, spinal cord disorders, epilepsy, craniofacial surgery and hydrocephalus. Our team includes a dedicated pediatric neurosurgeon working with supportive specialists from pediatric oncology, neurology, endorcinology, neuroradiology, neuropsychology, social support and genetics. At the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute, excellence starts with ensuring all patients needs are met by our team.
Pediatric Brain Tumors The Institute provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and therapy for benign and malignant central nervous system tumors. By combining neurosurgical expertise with interoperative brain mapping and monitoring of tumor resection, the Institute's surgeons are able to maximize tumor removal while maintaining patient safety. Treatment is enhanced with access to the Institute's tumor vaccine program, which focuses on using the patient's own immune system in helping to control tumor growth. Furthermore, the Institute participates in National Institutes of Health (NIH) - sponsored clinical trials and the National Children's Oncology Group clinical trials, enabling the medical team to provide leading-edge care for pediatric patients and spinal cord tumors.
