Daniel I. Rubenstein My interests focus on animal behavior, especially its evolution and adaptive value. Typically, behavior that enhances an individual's survival or reproductive prospects is favored by natural selection. By using mathematical models and by collecting data from field observations or experiments I search for the general rules that govern how animals make decisions about foraging, fighting and mating strategies. In the laboratory I use fish to identify the rules underlying female choice of males and I use waterstriders, crayfish, spiders and fish to understand why in some competitive situations interactions escalate to dangerous levels involving physical aggression whereas in others they are settled peacefully via conventional display. I am also engaged in a series of experiments exploring the decision-making process individual fish use when joining groups. By varying test group size and distance we can examine how individuals make choices as to which group to join. That some species are more sensitive to small differences in group size, whereas others are not and that response time is longer in some species than others, suggests that perceptual constraints play an important role in decision-making. Coupling the mechanistic (the 'hows') with the functional or evolutionary (the 'whys') aspects of behavior is the only way to gain a complete understanding of behavior in natural settings. Armed with this multilevel understanding, a realistic foundation can then be developed for unraveling the neural bases of behavior. Using simple sensory schemes and behavioral rules I am developing spatially explicit models to explore how animals form social groups and migrate over landscapes of different structure.

The Future of the IALT On 6th April 1979 at Trinity College Dublin the Constitution of the Irish Association was adopted. Thus the IALT is now twenty-five years old, it has an ordinary membership North and South of approximately 90 engaged in law teaching, in addition there are approximately 35 associate members in other organisations and elsewhere. The membership includes a current President of Ireland, and has included a former President of Ireland, a former First Minister of the Northern Executive, and as far as I am aware a current Minister in the Government of South Africa. In addition there are members within the judiciary. However in the past year there has not been one quorate meeting of the Council of the IALT, over the past number of years it has proved difficult to contact officers of the Council at times. As Membership Secretary during the past year I have not performed as well as I should. There was no Mid Year Conference during the course of the past year. Attendance at Conferences in recent years has not been great in my view, in particular only a small number of members of the association attend Conference. Most of the conference participants are those who are giving papers, most papers are given by those who are not members of the association, and very little association business other than conference business is conducted. My first conference was in Galway in 1983 and I have seen a decline in the association since that time. You meet far fewer people who are involved in law teaching or its administration in Ireland at conference now. There are members of this association whom I have never seen at a conference or have not seen at such for a long number of years. It would appear that the IALT has lost its attractiveness to senior people involved in the teaching of the law in Ireland. It may be that there are rival associations (variously described as Societies and Centres) that people are involved in.

My wife and I own five acres on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In our area there is a large population of whitetail deer with their accompanying parasite, the ubiquitous tick. When we first moved here three years ago our daughter and dog would quite often return to the house with ticks on their bodies. There are several stories in our area concerning severe harm coming to local residents as a result of these tick bites, including Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Erlichiosis. The second year we were here, we purchased a few guinea fowl. Ticks have been very rare in our life since then. Our guineas are range free and sleep where they wish (usually up in the rafters of the goat barn). They get most of their own food in the summer and reproduce on their own. They require practically no care at all. Their only drawback is their alarm call, which they issue quite frequently during the daylight hours. They only screech at night if disturbed and in fact, you may find them more alert than your best watch dog.
