    Introduction
It can be stated accurately that spiders are to be found everywhere (with apologies to William Morton Wheeler who originally made this claim for ants). Spiders, unique among all organisms in their modes of silk production and usage and of reproduction, are common (if often inconspicuous) predatory arthropods in all terrestrial and many aquatic ecosystems throughout Canada. From marine intertidal zones to tundra and rocky peaks, and all points between, the ardent araneologist is always close to a wealth of species and numerous specimens of great intrinsic and biological interest. Among all organisms, spiders form the seventh largest order. Furthermore, spiders are ruthless storm troops in the matriarchal anarchy that is the arthropod world: theirs is the most diverse, female-dominated, entirely predatory order on the face of the earth. As such, spiders are key components of all ecosystems in which they live. Fig. 1. Male Cybaeus multnoma Chamberlin and Ivie (RTA Clade, Dictynoidea, Cybaeidae).

RNID: UK Television Channels more Accountable
For the first time Ofcom, the communications regulator, had published figures for the number of subtitled programmes for 70 television channels in the UK. The charity RNID has praised Ofcom for making UK television channels more accountable than ever. The results, from Ofcom, mean deaf and hard of hearing consumers are now able to make more informed decisions when choosing to buy certain cable or satellite packages, and can opt against those whose subtitling figures are low. Mark Morris, Head of Parliamentary and European Affairs at RNID, says: "It is great news that some television channels, such as Sky News and Disney, are far exceeding the legal minimum subtitling requirements. However, it is disappointing to see that the music channels have not even started to subtitle any of their programmes in the first quarter.” "The fact that many channels are so easily meeting their targets simply demonstrates that Ofcom's minimum requirements set the bar too low. With reduced subtitling costs, we expect Ofcom to strengthen the minimum targets for subtitling when its Code is reviewed next year."

[Updated Oct 2001] *Some professional-quality fiction is starting to show up on the Internet, for example some authors are putting a few published stories on-line, and there are a number of new sites devoted to telling stories via web pages - usually in serial form. The line between Web E-zines and serial fiction has been blurring lately; if a web e-zine is just telling one story in installments, I'll list it under Serial Fiction . And publishers have been putting sample chapters of new books on-line for a while now, see

tribal membership is a good thing 2005-6-27: So often, people in the European countries (including the USA, Canada, Australia etc.) have used the word tribal in a negative sense to denote some sort of backwardness. However, it seems to me that tribalism is absolutely essential to a healthy mind. People in the urbanized societies still try to keep a tribal affinity, but it is difficult to do, and people who lose their tribal connections go mad. In most of the European countries over the last 100 years, the extended family has been replaced with the nuclear family, and in the last decade the move has been more towards the atomized household unit, namely the one-person house. This has not just had the effect of putting up house prices enormously. It also drives people completely bonkers. Human beings really do need to have a complete tribe to belong to, not just a couple, not just a nuclear family, and not just an extended family. People need a whole tribe. For psychological equilibrium, everybody needs a tribe.

SOUTHWEST CULTURE AREA INTRO Southwest culture area has been defined various ways, from highly restrictive (agricultural societies of Ariz and New Mex) to very broad (area between Great Basin and MesoAmerican Civilizations) Given extensive cultural linkages throughout this larger area, makes sense to think in terms of broader boundaries, though this makes SW the most culturally diverse of the 10 culture areas of Native No. America Geographically, SW includes almost all of the present states of Ariz. and New Mex, plus W Texas, SE corners of Calif. and Nevada, and much of No. Mexico (esp. Sonora) Environmentally, has some similarities to Great Basin, but in general has more dependable water sources, plus warmer climate, resulting in widespread agriculture and resulting cultural developments Since SW includes both well-preserved ruins ("cliff dwellings") and substantial present-day native populations with many distinctive customs (Pueblo and Navajo), it is strongly associated with "Indian" in popular consciousness What is less often recognized in popular image of SW is substantial cultural and ecological diversity present in aboriginal (and contemporary) Indian societies Cultural diversity generally classified into three main cultural divisions: 1) Puebloans (Hopi, Zuni, Tewa, Keresan, etc.): peoples inhabiting villages of adobe apt. houses, practicing intensive horticulture, and with highly structured social organization and ritual
