Introduction
The Dedham Science Center is publishing a monthly magazine. Each month different classes will be writing articles and stories for the magazine. Our class has been chosen to write articles for the first issue! We will be the spider reporters for this issue. As reporters, we will have to research our spiders before writing the articles. We have also been asked to make either a word search or a crossword puzzle to go with each article.

The Task
Here's what you need to do.
  • First, read some general information about spiders. Next, look at types of spiders to decide what spider you will write about. Make sure you have seen a picture of the spider. Then, use the organizer chart to help put your facts in order. Write your story, remembering to put good opening and closing sentences. Type your story on the computer. Finally, you will make a word search or crossword puzzle to go with your story.

Teacher Background Information
This unit will help children appreciate the place spiders have in the world and will lessen the fear of spiders caused by misunderstandings. They will begin activities such as building a spider habitat, constructing a web and reading about spiders to develop the theme. There are more than 30,000 different types of spiders known to scientists! Most of them are very tiny animals that help people by eating insects. The banana spider, the trap-door spider, the purse-web spider, the garden spider, and the grass spider are just a few of the interesting animals we're going to learn about. Spiders are not insects as many people believe. Students will learn the physical differences between insects and arachnids in this unit. Students will also study other distinct characteristics of spiders, such as spiders' contribution to other organisms in nature. Spiders' need for food will be explained as will the concepts of "prey" and "natural enemies." Spiders belong to a class of animals called arachnids. They have four pairs of segmented legs, and can grow a new leg if they lose one. Most spiders have eight eyes, and they do not have antennae or wings. A spider's body is divided into two sections, the abdomen and the cephalothorax. The legs, eyes, and mouthparts are all in the cephalothorax. Most spiders have poison glands and fangs in their jaws, which they use to inject poison into insects. The venom paralyzes or kills their prey. Spiders usually have six fingerlike silk glands called spinnerets located beneath their abdomen. The silk comes from inside the spider's body as a liquid, thicker than water. When a spider wants to make a web, it squeezes the silk out of the two small holes at the back of its body called spinnerets. The moment it hits the air, the silk dries into a line that looks like a long strand of hair. Many spiders use their sticky silk webs to catch food, which consists of tiny animals. Some spiders use silk as draglines, which are long lines of silk the spider hangs onto as the wind blows it through the air. The spider can always crawl back up the silk line if it is blown some place it doesn't want to be! Some spiders spin silk webs, and others line their burrows with silk. Many spiders lay their eggs in silken sacs. All young spiders, and some adult males, release long silken threads to float or ride the wind to new areas. This is called ballooning.

Dear bird eating spider lovers, Keeping bird spiders became very popular in recent years. During the many lectures in schools, institutes, associations etc. concerning spiders in general and bird spiders in particular, it appeared
that after a few hours a negative attitude towards these fascinating creatures can change into respect.
Some people even go further and want to know more because they would like, if possible, to keep bird spiders themselves. A better understanding and especially correct knowledge concerning this subject is an acute necessity and we try to accomplish that on this site. Other spider lovers can always share their knowledge with others on this site.
We also like to receive articles and tips. PS: We also make mistakes and want to learn from them. So do not hesitate, in case I mentioned
something incorrectly myself, to draw my attention to it. Best regards,

Let's Talk About Spiders And Bugs!
OVERVIEW: Students will be learning about spiders and insects. Primarily we will focus on their differences and how spiders are not really considered true insects. This lesson is designed for a second grade class. The TEKS it will focus on are:
2b) Plan and conduct simple descriptive investigations.
d) Explanations based on information
e) Communicate findings
6b) Observe and describe parts of plants and animals. The students will accomplish this lesson by observing two different types of spiders, a grasshopper and a June beetle. It will be necessary for one to collect any two types of spiders that are large enough for the children to see their bods parts, and to collect the grasshopper and June beetle. It is important to keep them in four separate jars. Observing will be the key to most of the students activities. Grouping the children at tables for this lesson will add to the ease of rotating the specimens. Instead of rotating the jars between tables, you can chose to rotate the students to prevent any damage to the specimens. OBJECTIVE: First, to introduce students to the concept of arachnids, that is spiders most commonly, and true insects. Once these concepts have been introduced, then to have the children be able to differentiate between the two.

Wolf Spiders
Family Lycosidae Wolf spiders are found throughout Australia. They are robust, agile hunters that live on the ground in leaf litter or burrows. They are often found in lawns and gardens.
Habitat and Biology
Wolf spiders are found in habitats ranging from dry inland shrublands and woodlands to wet coastal forests and alpine meadows. Some species, such as the Lycosa furcillata and L. godefffroyi are common in suburban gardens. Two of the commonest Australian species are Lycosa godeffroyi and L. leuckartii , with a wide range in the temperate parts of the continent. Many Wolf Spiders have wide distributions, especially across inland regions. This distribution is aided by their ability to disperse aerially as spiderlings or small juveniles over large distances. Many also have very specific microhabitat preferences such as stream-side gravel beds, montane herb-fields or coastal sand-dunes. Most are wanderers but some build burrows, either open or with a trapdoor, while others may make temporary retreats in vegetation. Arid zone species build turrets to deflect floodwaters during rainy periods, while others use pebbles to plug their burrows. In woodlands, twigs may be used to form a palisade around the top of the burrow. The shape and materials used to form burrows and trapdoors may help to distinguish similar-looking species. According to the Queensland Museum, two Wolf spider species are known to be predators of cane toads.

  • Spiders are Good Guys
    Spiders need a good spin-doctor. The movie "Arachnophobia" certainly did not help their image. A tiny spider in the sink can compel the most self-assured person to scream for the designated spider killer in the family. Despite their reputation, spiders are beneficial. They eat all kinds of pesky bugs like flies and crickets. Actually they are opportunistic feeders and eat pretty much anything they can catch.
  • The Arachnids
    The Class Arachnida are the most familiar of the Arthropods outside of the ever-present insects. There are over 71 000 named species and they are united by the possession of eight legs, the lack of biting and chewing mouthparts.

    ~~~Writing for the Search Engines~~~ From: Carmine Cecere Hi there, I run my own small business as an internet consultant in Australia and read the article regarding good copy as being vital to search engine submissions and being ranked higher. My question is should the copy be product related with specifics? Or more general in terms and be more about site content and what offerings there are? e.g. specials, discounts buy two get one free? etc. Regards, Carmine Cecere
    ~~~Heather's Response~~~ Hi, Carmine, Good question! You're smart to be concerned with your home page. Although people can enter your site from any page (especially if you've optimized your inner pages), your home page still needs to sell, shine and snatch your prospect's attention. Writing a successful home page is like walking a tightrope. On one hand, you want to give your prospects enough information to tempt them into learning more. Yet, if you tell them too much (and have an ever-scrolling home page), you'll overwhelm your reader and give them *no reason* to discover more information.

    Identifying and Misidentifying the Brown Recluse Spider
    Rick Vetter

    Department of Entomology, University of California Riverside
    Abstract
    The brown recluse spider, Loxosceles reclusa , is often implicated as a cause of necrotic skin lesions.[1-3] Diagnoses are most commonly made by clinical appearance and infrequently is a spider seen, captured or identified at the time of the bite.[1, 2, 4-6] The brown recluse lives in a circumscribed area of the U.S. (the south central Midwest) with a few less common recluse species living in the more sparsely-populated southwest U.S.[7] In these areas, where spider populations may be dense, recluse spiders may be a cause of significant morbidity. However, outside the natural range of these recluse species, the conviction that they are the etiological agents behind necrotic lesions of unknown origin is widespread, and most often erroneous. In some states such as California, unsubstantiated reports concerning recluse spider bites have taken on the status of "urban legend" leading to overdiagnosis and, therefore, inappropriate treatment.
    Natural History
    Despite their reclusive habits, they do occasionally bite humans. Recluses typically bite when they are trapped between flesh and another surface, as when a sleeping human rolls over on a prowling spider, or when putting on clothing or shoes containing spiders. Ways to reduce bite risk from recluse spiders include: 1) keep beds away from walls; remove bed skirts and items under the bed so that the only pathway to the bed is up the legs. 2) Keep clothing off the floor; if it is on the floor, shake it vigorously before dressing. 3) Store all intermittantly used items such as gardening clothing, baseball mitts or roller skates in spider-proof boxes or bags.

    http://www.arabianwildlife.com/nature/insect/ins09.html
    Camel Spiders Solifugida
    Camel spiders are one of the fastest running arthropods. Although they have four pairs of legs, they run using only three pairs. The first pair of legs or pedipalpi are held up in front of them and used in a similar manner to the antennae of insects. They have very long, silky setae and are constantly moving in order to locate and pick-up prey. Despite their fearsome appearance and their strong bite, solifugids are unlikely to harm humans. In the past they were considered venomous and extremely dangerous but it is now thought that the only risk of injury resulting from them is caused by shock or infection following a bite. There is no evidence of venom in any part of their body.
    Camel spiders are nocturnal predators of other arthropods including scorpions and are voracious feeders. Some species kill and feed on lizards and it is speculated that others kill mice and birds. They rely solely on their speed and stealth to catch their prey. In desert areas they are often attracted to lights at night in search of food and their appearance can cause alarm if they enter tents. It is rare to see them during the winter months in UAE and they are thought to hide or hibernate during cold periods.
    Camel spiders in UAE
    Despite their conspicuous appearance and size, little is known about these creatures and we are not even sure of their exact identity. There are probably three families of solifugids in UAE. These are the long-legged and sandy-coloured Galeodidae and Solpugidae, and the black-coloured Rhagodidae which has shorter legs and is better adapted for digging. The Galeodidae are commonly seen in sandy areas and the largest species is probably

A " spider map " or " search engine spider map " is intended for the search engine spiders, it links to every page on the site which you want indexed. A search engine spider map may also be called a " links page " but that term is more commonly used to refer to a page with reciprocal links.
