Spelling Lessons
The Question is: I am student teacher, teaching 3rd grade. I need help with my Spelling lessons. I have to be creative. Yonaira R. The Answer is: Have the students use their creativity and develop ways to enrich their spelling mastery of words. I had my 3rd graders several years ago, create their own spelling games to present and show their classmates how their games were played. These games were used for an entire month and each week the students would change the spelling game cards to accommodate our new list of words for the week. I had 4 to 5 students per month create spelling games, this allowed ample time for students to learn the game and spend time playing it as well. You would be surprised how much the creativity increased by the time I reached the last 4 to 5 students in my classroom. I enjoyed using sport activities for increasing spelling word mastery . I would utilize the sport which dominated a particular season, like football. I created a football grid with both lines going the same direction. The left was the starting point and the right was the touchdown zone. The number of rows was determined by the number of students in the classroom and the number of groups I wanted. Therefore, I used 4 rows to indicate 4 teams with 5 players per team.

Ten False Assumptions About Teaching Spelling © 2001 J. Richard Gentry All Children can become expert spellers if they try hard enough. The ones who do not are probably lazy. Children who make 100% on a spelling test should be able to spell the same words correctly two weeks later in their writing. Expert spelling is “caught” from reading and writing. Spelling instruction should focus on a relatively few high-frequency words. Spelling is best taught in meaningful context. The best way to teach spelling is to focus on writing and teach spelling in use. The best spelling instruction for grades four, five, and six focuses on grouping children according to their developmental levels. “We have a great spelling program, it’s called “Words Their Way!” “I am already using an effective method of teaching spelling.” Spelling basals are bad. Spelling doesn’t matter.

From Carol Gibson (carol.gibson@sendit.nodak.edu), a fourth grade teacher at Prairie View School in Devils Lake, North Dakota: 2. Differentiated Spelling Ideas
From Deborah Kempin (Deborah219@aol.com), a fifth grade teacher for Fair Lawn School District in Fair Lawn, New Jersey: "Over the years I have been able to create a differentiated spelling program based on Diane Snowball's publications on how to teach spelling. I use a basic list of words that are spelling patterns that fifth graders are required to know from a textbook. I pre-test the entire class at the same time. Students try to find the pattern as I provide each word. The student that can figure out the pattern for the week receives a reward. I then check the words and return the list to the students for them to correct. The words that the students wrote incorrectly are then written into a spelling wordbook that the students are required to have. We then brainstorm new words using the same pattern. Students can read the room, use their minds to rhyme, or look words up in the books they read or in dictionaries. "Students then choose their favorite word that must be a spelling word that they feel they want to learn and is an appropriate 'fifth grade word'. As the students provide the words, I write them onto a poster board. Students who want to be more challenged will offer to take more challenging words and students who want less challenging words provide words that are 'comfortable' for them and choose those. Each student then ends up with 20 words to learn for the week. Each has his/her own list. I do this each Monday. It only takes about 40 minutes. I give them different assignments each night as well as a packet that is due at the end of the week. Examples are word searches, pattern finds, read and find the pattern for the week in an article from a magazine, etc. The kids then test each other each Friday on their own words. This program has helped me tremendously with time constraints in scheduling. The children all feel successful and become acquainted with our language and vocabulary."

What this means for teaching and learning Misunderstandings about how and what to teach our children abound in education. And no subject seems to be more misunderstood than spelling. In these pages, I will try to clarify some issues by dispelling five myths about spellingand consider their implications. My goal is to help you teach spelling as effectively as possible. MYTH 1 Invented Spelling Hurts Kids Inventing a spelling for an unfamiliar wordalso frequently referred to as temporary spelling, sound spelling, constructed spelling, phonic spelling, or developmental spellingis natural. We all do it. And kids do it all the time. However, contrary to what a lot of people think, invented spelling doesn't hurt kids; our failure to teach word-specific knowledge and correct spelling does. When children know, for example, that "green" is spelled g-r-e-e-n, and not g-r-e-n-e, they develop better spelling habits in general and use fewer invented spellings in their writing.

The use of all four sensory channels of the brain (hearing, saying, writing and seeing) is vital in order to prevent or overcome the tendency to reverse or confuse letters, the major handicap in reading and writing. This multisensorial approach makes constant use of the control by the mind of the muscles of the voice and those of the hand - kinaesthetic control. It is of prime importance to combine the kinaesthetic skill of writing with the hearing, saying, seeing and oral-motor feedback of phonograms and of words in the spelling lesson, and well in advance of any undertaking of reading from books. No other method can fix sooner or more securely in memory than words that can be written and read at a glance, thus building a sight vocabulary. Spelling is the key to both good writing and reading of the language.

THE EFFECTS OF SYNTHETIC PHONICS TEACHING ON READING AND SPELLING ATTAINMENT
    CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND 1.1 There has been much debate in recent years about just how children should be taught to read. The phonic approach, whereby children are shown that letter sounds are a guide to the pronunciation of words, has a long history, starting to develop in the nineteenth century (Morris, 1984). In this approach, the sounds of the letters of the alphabet are taught, and children learn the correspondences between letters and groups of letters and their pronunciations (Adams, 1990). ANALYTIC PHONICS 1.6 However, in carrying out this study Joyce Watson noticed that one class was making better progress than the others. The pace of analytic phonics teaching was accelerated in this class; the children were learning about letters in all positions of CVC words several months earlier than the other classes, and were taught to sound and blend letters to pronounce unfamiliar words. The gains these children made compared to the other classes were still apparent at the end of the third year at school. SYNTHETIC PHONICS AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 1.8 In this report we present the findings of a 7 year study in which we examined the effects of teaching synthetic phonics on literacy attainment. In an earlier study we had found that 5 year old children getting a supplementary synthetic phonics programme had better word reading, spelling and phonemic awareness skills than children getting a supplementary analytic phonics programme (Johnston and Watson, 2004).

But what exactly is it?
Most schools in England already use a version of phonics - where children are taught the sounds of letters to make up words. But teachers use that approach with a combination of others, such as encouraging children to work out what a word might be from the context such as the pictures on a page or the use of repetition of particular words. In the past children might have been taught to learn whole words first, probably using flash-cards, and then they were given books which had the words they had learnt in them. With phonics generally, children learn to read using the sounds of letters rather than the names. So a letter 'D' is said 'duh' not 'dee'. So far so good. But there are two main types of phonics - analytic and synthetic.

Spelling making a comeback in school
By Laura Pappano, 1/25/2004 We New Englanders are so primed for competition, we risk withdrawal given a Sunday without a Pats game and a week gap between the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. ADVERTISEMENT One idea: Make nachos, invite friends over, and watch "Spellbound," an award-winning film released last week on DVD about the high-stakes face-off between children taking part in the National Spelling Bee. Seeing 13-year-olds with braces parse words like "chiaroscurist" and "demarche" is apparently as thrilling as a Rodney Harrison interception in the end zone. Well, almost. The point is something is happening around spelling. ESPN president George Bodenheimer may not have earned his top ranking in the Sporting News "Power 100" for broadcasting the National Spelling Bee finals. But people are tuning in. After decades in which teachers fretted about crimping creative expression, interest in spelling is rising. Newer research by national literacy specialists suggests that, for the most part, good spellers aren't born; they're made. And improving spelling ability is connected to improving language skills in other areas. While researchers say most of us can become better spellers with practice, some appear more "natural" as a result of being motivated readers, having a deeper understanding of language, or better vocabularies.

    About Grace Vyduna-Haskins...
    The Spel-Lang Tree
    Teacher Feature... On Spelling/Reading Relationships
by Grace Vyduna-Haskins Until just over a hundred years ago, the teaching of spelling and reading in the United States was very closely related. For the time of the earliest colonization in America until the late 1800s almost every child learned to read via a spelling book and most children memorized the spellings of lists of words preliminary to approaching connected text. Around 1890 there was a great literature movement and spelling books were discarded as being outdated relics of rote learning. Skip ahead eighty or ninety years. Much research since 1971, beginning with the work of Charles Read at the University of Wisconsin and expanded by Edmund Henderson and his students at the University of Virginia, has centered on how children learn to spell developmentally. This research revealed that knowledge of the American spelling system serves far greater purposes than the majority of 20th century educators generally believed. Correlations have been found between spelling development and reading readiness, between spelling and accuracy and fluency of reading, and between spelling and comprehension. We now know that spelling and reading are intricately connected but that the influence of spelling on reading is greater than the influence of spelling on reading.
