Spelling Power is a one-volume, non-workbook focused spelling program that teaches spelling using lists of most frequently used words. The book’s author, Beverly L. Adams-Gordon, builds on the assumption that phonics instruction alone isn’t sufficient to produce a good speller. Rule-based spelling has to be combined with the teaching of “visual spelling” – recognizing when a word is spelled correctly. To teach spelling in this way, Spelling Power The “Quick Start” section is followed by more detailed chapters explaining the philosophy behind the spelling program and providing extra teacher training. The bulk of the book consists of spelling lists – frequently used and frequently misspelled words, organized loosely by spelling rule. Spelling rules seem incidental to the program; they are written in small print at the head of some of the lists, but there is no method suggested for teaching spelling rules. The emphasis of the program is on visualizing and spelling correctly the most frequently occuring words in English. Each level contains a number of word “groups,” used as a basis for the daily teaching test. Levels A-F are elementary; levels E-J are high school; levels I-L are college/business level. A sample group from level D begins, “Usually /u/ is spelled u as in run,” and contains the words

Spelling and Literacy in Cuba and Nicaragua The Hispanic spelling system used in Cuba was simple enough before Castro's revolution, but in 1953 with more than half the children unschooled, literacy rates were around 42% in urban areas and 23.6% overall. Castro's guerrilla manifesto of 1957 included an immediate literacy campaign, with the watchword 'Revolution and education are the same thing The 1961 National Literacy Campaign reportedly reduced the level of illiteracy to 3.9%, but without their simple orthography, it might have had much less success. The straightforward spelling made it possible to use Paulo Freire's conscientisation techniques of teaching reading and writing with high-school students as teachers. However, with English spelling as it is, a similar teaching method could not be used to teach literacy in English-speaking schools - as a simple experiment would show. Lessons began with thirty key politicising words containing all letters and speech sounds, broken down into syllables from which new words and sentences can be created. To introduce the vowels and consonants, the fifteen Hispanic phrases first taught were Organisation of American States (from which Cuba had just been expelled) National institute of agrarian reform, the co-operative farm, the land, Cuban fishermen, the people's store, every Cuban a home owner, healthy people in a free Cuba, national institute of tourism, the militia, the revolution that wins all the battles, the people at work, Cuba is not alone, the year of education, poetry and the alphabet.

Chandler, Kelly and the Mapleton Teacher-Research Group. (1999) Spelling Inquiry: How One Elementary School Caught the Mnemonic Plague . York, Maine: Stenhouse Publications
Readers who open Spelling Inquiry looking for specific recommendations of how to effectively teach spelling will be disappointed while interested in updating teaching techniques for spelling, the authors do not focus on instructional methods. Instead, they present a very different, and perhaps, ultimately, more useful, approach to instruction. In Spelling Inquiry , they describe whole (and holistic) strategies for creating an environment that is "student-centered and inquiry based," and thus more conducive to effective learning and teaching of spelling.
Teachers at the Mapleton Elementary School, along with Kelly Chandler, then an doctoral student, organized a research group to both discuss issues that arose in their classrooms and find solutions to the questions they raised about teaching techniques, especially for teaching spelling. Spelling Inquiry details the group's development and evolution over the course of a few years and provides suggestions about how teachers in other schools could implement similar research groups. Included in each of the six chapters are very practical suggestions and recommendations on how to organize a group. Also included are "interludes," descriptions of how various teachers integrated what they had learned during their group discussions into the classroom. The authors emphasize the importance of talking with children and their parents about their expectations (the teachers distributed a survey about spelling to parents, the results influenced their teaching tremendously) and discuss ways of assessing and evaluating what children have learned.

President Pledges $10 Thousand to Teach Proper Spelling Of "Tsunami"
President George W. Bush, who called on Americans this week to make a donation to help victims of the Asian tsunami, has contributed $10,000 himself, the White House said today, for one of the most serious challenges posed by the crisis. "Two weeks ago, most people didn't know what a tsunami was, or at least that that's what you call a really big tidal wave-type event," the president told assembled reporters at a press conference. "Now, with so many affected so deeply, millions of Americans are being forced to discuss something they can't pronounce or spell. I'm an education president, and I knew this was one area where I couldn't afford not to make a difference." Bush, whose wealth is estimated at some $13 million, on Tuesday asked "every American to contribute as they are able to do so," particularly in the desperately needed areas of map production and educational materials on proper spelling and pronunciation.

Spelling strategies
Strategies for solving words Students should be encouraged to reflect on their learning and the strategies they apply in the spelling process (metacognition). Students need to develop the language to talk about their learning. These strategies should be explicit taught and constantly referred to in the classroom.
How do I spell a new word?
  • Think about meaning. Does it give you any clues to spelling patterns? Say the word slowly listen carefully. Write the word syllable-by-
syllable. Make sure you have represented each sound with a letter or letters. Look carefully to see if the pattern looks right Try different patterns that might be right See if you know another word which is similar Ask yourself what it means Begin with the base word

70. How To Study Spelling Words
This helps the student understand that a spelling is a meaningful map of the A shortcut version of the strategy for studying spelling words
http://www.auburn.edu/~murraba/spelling.html
How to Study Spelling Words When poor spellers begin with the written word, they often try to memorize a spelling as if it were an arbitrary letter string. Arbitrary strings are terribly hard to remember; think how long it takes to learn a phone number, and then imagine trying to learn 88,500 phone numbersthe estimated number of words in printed school English. The following strategy helps the student focus on the pronunciation of a word before seeing its spelling. This helps the student understand that a spelling is a meaningful map of the pronunciation. When spellings are understood as pronunciation maps, they are much easier to remember. First, examine the mouth moves. Example Say the word. night
Say the syllables if there are more than one. Stretch the word. /nnnIII t
Work syllable by syllable with polysyllabic words.
If a phoneme can't be stretched, exaggerate it.
Segment (split up) the phonemes.

Grammar -
1. Go through your district standards or grade level expectations for what
students should know about grammar.
2. Make a list or a curriculum map of all that they need to learn about
grammar for their grade level and plot out where and when you will teach
each piece during the year.
3. When you teach grammar, use a context (book, selection of text, piece of student writing) that addresses the concept or "thing" you are teaching, say prepositional phrases, etc. 4. Guiding Readers and Writers, a book by Fontas and Pinnell, has a whole section on doing a Language Block as a part of reading and writing workshop. It has lots of great ideas that work. Spelling - 1. I always initally assess spelling using tests that I get from the book, Words Their Way, by Bear, et. al. These tests have 20-25 words and allow you to see where the kids are. They can be used for grouping in spelling

Methodology questions and answers Click here to send in your questions I'm teaching some Arabic students on an IELTS preparation course. A major problem for the students is very poor spelling. This clearly matters as spelling mistakes disadvantage them in the reading, writing and listening parts of the exam. Rightly or wrongly, I am reluctant to spend too much time on the 'rules' which apply to spelling due to the number of exceptions and vagaries in English spelling. I've tried tape recorded dictation of familiar vocabulary, double-sided cards with translation of easily-translatable words such as concrete nouns, and 'lines'. Progress, however, is very slow and this, from students who otherwise are well motivated and generally good learners. Tips would be much appreciated.

I began my teaching career teaching Arab students so I understand your problem. The whole need to put vowels in each syllable can be helped by some phonic work and dividing words into syllables and the dictation and the other methods you are using.
