42. Lesson Plan: Spelling With Memory Cues
Many poor spellers learn how to spell words correctly using memory cues.spelling activities teach children in K 5 the techniques used by memory experts.
http://www.gate.net/~labooks/xLPspelling.html
Based on one of the lesson plans in Little Lemon: Activities for Developing Motivation and Memory Skills Lesson Plans from Learning Abilities Books. LESSON PLAN: Spelling with Memory Cues List of Words Age group: This is for any age; however, younger children need help in selecting relevant, non-ambiguous associations, e. g. see the explanation about how to spell the word, color. Rationale: Many people remember how to spell words correctly by using memory cues. Use these activities to teach children in K-5 and upper grades to apply techniques used by memory experts. The basic memory principle in this lesson plan is to associate, or link, something you need to remember to something you already know. It might be a silly association or a logical association. It just needs to be a memorable association. Learning the basic rules of spelling is highly recommended. This lesson plan is not meant to replace other methods of teaching. However, this works as a great alternative when other methods fail. We tell children to begin a word at the left. Some children don't want to admit that they don't know left from right. They might need the lesson titled

Hello Shirin,
I teach the alphabet this way. I encourage children to write on blackboard as many abbreviations as possible. They all know the right spelling of following abbreviations [in our language English is used for the spelling of these DJ, UK, USA, NHL, SOS, CNN, FBI, OK, CIA, NBA, VIP, PC, DVD, TV, LP, LA and many others. Going through this list we learn how to spell particular letters. Bye. (Editor's note. I use abbreviations too, and play a memory game in which the students have to say the abbreviations that are written on the board. As I go round the class I erase one of the abbreviations, but the student reciting must still say the missing ones. And so on, until the last student has to say them all, with perhaps only one still on the board. Finally, I wipe them all off, and in pairs the students have to write them down from memory. A useful and involving way to practice saying the letters of the alphabet)

Essential Linguistics: What You Need to Know to Teach Reading, ESL, Spelling, Phonics and Grammar
David and Yvonne Freeman. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, 2004.
280 pp. ISBN 0-325-00274-6. Reviewed by Sarah Hudelson, Arizona State University, Tempe Essential Linguistics is a book on linguistics written for educators. The authors, experienced and respected scholars specializing in literacy and bilingual and second language populations, examine concepts basic to the majority of introductory linguistics courses. These include phonology, morphology, and syntax, as well as native language acquisition. However, unlike most other linguistics texts, the authors also offer in-depth discussions about why knowledge of these concepts is important to teachers, and how teachers may use what they have learned about the scientific study of language in their own teaching. They consider specifically the teaching of ESL, reading, spelling, grammar, and phonics. To illustrate this organization and approach, the chapter on phonology, with a focus on English phonemes and articulatory phonetics, includes a discussion of English-speaking children’s acquired, subconscious knowledge of English phonology and phonotactics (how sounds may be combined in English to form words), and it also includes articulatory explanations for why tongue twisters are so hard to produce, as well as classroom resources for tongue twisters in a variety of languages. The following chapter focuses on classroom implications from the study of phonology for teaching reading. Freeman and Freeman provide an extensive exploration of both phonological and phonemic awareness and the arguments that have been made about the significance of such awareness for beginning reading. They then present conclusions regarding how phonemic awareness develops best, as well as their analysis of the role of phonology in the teaching of reading.

How To Teach Literacy
Teaching Spelling Within the New Literacy Curriculum Arlyne LeSchack
Chances are that many parents feel the only way for their children to learn how to spell is for them to come home with 10-20 new words per week and memorize how to spell them. In truth this doesn't workthe student may get an A on the Friday spelling test, but they are unable to transfer their knowledge of the correct spelling to their writing.

My son is now in Level 5 of the Barton System and he's in a reading frenzy. When we were shopping at Costco, I finally had to take his book away. He said it was so good he couldn't put it down. Those were the magic words I'd hoped to hear for so many years. After one year of tutoring, he's gone from struggling with second-grade readers to rapidly and accurately reading and loving fifth-grade books. Your system is fabulous. Sharon Marriott
Livermore, CA

Thanks to the Barton System, my fifth-grade son went from testing at a second-grade reading level to testing at a seventh-grade reading level in a year and a half. In spelling, he's now testing at his grade level (fifth), up from a first-grade level last school year. Sandy Gant, Saratoga, CA

Spelling Spelling is an important feature of writing. Most importantly, misspelt words can lead to confusion or even stop the reader from understanding the writer's message. The impact of misspelt words varies enormously depending on the purpose and register of a document, for instance, misspelt words in a formal letter will probably create a more negative impression on the reader than those in an e-mail; similarly misspelt words in an exam are more serious than those in notes written in preparation.

Unlocking Literacy Donald D. Deshler, Ph.D., Center for Research on Learning, University of Kansas "This book... is just what the doctor ordered! In one volume, the teacher has a comprehensive introduction to letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, and morpheme patterns in words. All will benefit greatly from this important volume." — Keith E. Stanovich, Ph.D., University of Toronto, author of Progress in Understanding Reading
  • sharpen their knowledge of three basic concepts for decoding words and spelling them: letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, and morpheme patterns
  • boost early literacy and language development by helping students develop print awareness and phonological awareness through letter naming, letter forming, and listening and speaking activities such as poetry and play
  • begin formal reading and writing instruction by teaching students to identify, understand and use common consonant and vowel patterns, syllables, common spelling rules, prefixes and suffixes, roots, non-phonetic words, and contractions

Understanding Spelling ) giving a full account of the project and its implications for schools was published by CLPE in 2000. Three London primary schools took part in the project, the aim of which was to examine how children learn to spell, and how teachers can work most effectively to support their progress in spelling. The project studied the teaching and learning of spelling from Reception to Year 6. In addition a special study looked at the progress of a small number of case study children in Years 4,5 and 6 who read competently but had difficulties with spelling. Schools were visited several times a term, and researchers collected reading and writing samples, conducted interviews with teachers and children, observed in classrooms and provided INSET. Staff meetings or INSET days were held at least once a term to discuss issues in spelling and the progress of the project. back to top The findings of the project team were: In learning spelling children need to be helped from the outset to draw on multiple sources of knowledge (eg known words, common letter strings, word structures and meanings). Teaching strategies to develop all the relevant competences at both KS1 and KS2 were collected and classified and appear as Chapter 5 in

Spelling: A Lost Art
by Linda Schrock Taylor
by Linda Schrock Taylor
I would like to begin by thanking the following teachers/researchers for showing me logical strategies for spelling: Romalda Spalding, Louisa Cook Moats, and Wanda Sanseri. Schools only pretend to teach spelling. Children are assigned spelling books in many classrooms; in many schools. Lists of words are included; activities around those lists are completed; tests are given. So…why is yet another generation of poor spellers being sent out from the schools, into the working world, where they are lost, even with computers and tools such as Franklin Spelling Aces? The main reason for this outrage is that possibly as many as 99% of the teachers do not understand that English is written in an alphabetic Code, and that this Code for English is used to encode auditory speech and inner speech (i.e. thought). Most teachers are not even aware that English is well structured and logical. Many would have difficulty comprehending the fact that print is, indeed
