Why Study Phonics with Dorbooks?
Because at Dorbooks, Inc. we believe that reading, like any other complex skill such as dancing or playing the piano, is most effectively taught gradually, one note, one step at a time until whole groups of notes, or steps can be combined into an entire song or dance routine. Dorbooks, Inc. publishes phonics books and phonics games teaching reading and spelling using direct, systematic phonics . Sounds and syllables gradually build into words and sentences. Phonics is the process - sight reading is the result.

Learning High-Frequency Words By Diane Snowball The 100 most frequently used words make up about half of the written English language. Here are strategies I use to help students learn to spell these words.
Strategy 1: Chart the Words
To underscore the idea of high-frequency words, I have students keep a list of the words they encounter most often in their own reading and writing. I later supply them with a chart like our 100 Most Common High-Frequency Words . (Students can keep this chart of high-frequency words in their writing folder or notebook and check off each word as they learn it. In the younger grades, display this list on your word wall at eye level.) I like older students to check early in the year if they know how to spell all high-frequency words. If not, they need to set personal goals to learn them. With younger students, we make learning high-frequency words an early priority, along with trying unknown words.
Strategy 2: Break Bad Habits
It's very difficult for students to break the habit of a misspelling if they do it for a few weeks. I carefully observe students' writing, and if I see they are consistently misspelling the same high-frequency word, I say, "I notice you are using that word often in your writing, so let's find out and learn the correct spelling."

Mastering New Words for Writing By Diane Snowball A seven-year-old recently told me that instead of the whole class learning the same spelling words, students would be better off learning the words they wanted to use for their own writing. Smart kid! So how do we help children select and learn relevant words?
Strategy 1: Proofreading
As soon as children are spelling some words conventionally, encourage them to proofread: Underline words they think are wrong, and then try to get them right. A Try-It-Out sheet (with columns for First Try, Second Try, Third Try, and Correct Spelling) can help. Children try each word two or three ways and then use a resource to check the spellings. This is also useful for charting spelling growth.
Strategy 2: Choosing Words

What is the philosophy behind integrating reading and writing in the classroom? There's not only a philosophy behind integrating reading and writing; there's a psychology of learning that supports this integration as well. Humans are imitative creatures much of the time: When children enjoy a story, whether they read it themselves or it is read to them, they usually will try to write a similar story. How much they imitate will vary: The structure, the language, the characters, the plot, or all of the above. Upon reading Mouse's Birthday by Jane Yolen, for example, young children often try to write their own "cumulative" story in which characters keep getting added (in this case, into a very small space!). When we wish to teach middle school students about writing a persuasive essay, for example, we might have them read Olga Owens Huckins's letter to a Boston newspaper in which she argued powerfully against the indiscriminant spraying of DDT. At all levels there is an interactive, integrated relationship between learning to read and write, and the more we can take advantage of this relationship in our teaching, the more enjoyable and robust will our students' learning be. What is the best, most effective way to improve students' spelling? I need help! [Sixth grade teacher]

Most English-speaking children can say these sounds, put them in some 4000 to 24,000 words which they use in oral sentences that they comprehend before they enter grade one.

How to Teach a Teenager With a Learning Disability How to Spell
Every child learns differently and excels using different learning strategies. Here are some ideas to help your student with a learning disability learn how to spell. Steps: Encourage reading. Read together. Listen to books on tape. Let your child choose reading material that is interesting to her. Good readers become good spellers. Praise and motivate. Praise your student for every attempt to spell independently. You will want to eliminate any feelings of failure a student might have with misspelling words, but don't sugar coat your praise. A teenager will pick up on fake praise. Say things like, "You did a great job getting this or these words right. Those are hard letter combinations to remember, good job. Now let's think about how we can fix this or these words. This part of the word is correct. What do you think is another way to spell this word?" Try several different approaches to teach spelling. Introduce several techniques and let your student choose which one to use.

Return to List of Facts about Effective Literacy Instruction List of OnLine Readings: 3360 Facts on the teaching of spelling Too much that is known about how to teach spelling isn't being put into practice. I can think of no subject we teach more poorly or harbor more myths about than spelling.Richard Gentry, 1987 Background For decades, more people seem to have considered themselves poor spellers than good spellers, despite the fact that most of us spell correctly the vast majority of the words we write. With spelling, we seem to expect that all of us should spell one hundred percent correctly, even on first drafts, and even as young children. Perhaps it is this unrealistic expectation that leads some parents and others to object when teachers use newer methods of helping children learn to spell, such as encouraging children to "use invented spelling" in their early attempts to write. Such critics mistakenly assume that children who initially use approximate spellings will never become good spellers, or that if the time-honored method of memorizing spelling lists were used instead, every child would become a perfect speller. Neither observed experience nor research supports these assumptions. What research demonstrates

  • Young children encouraged to use invented spellings seem to develop word recognition and phonics skills sooner than those not encouraged to spell the sounds they hear in words (Clarke, 1988).

General Education .... Spelling Fish
Introduction
I saw this idea used at my sons infant school. Words you want your child to learn to spell are written on the scales of a fish. When your child can spell the word they can colour the scale. The activity could be adapted as a simple word reading activity for those children who are not yet ready to try learning to spell words.
Spelling Fish
This fish has various words written on each scale (suitable for an average 7 year old) It is available to download as an Adobe Acrobat fish1.pdf file from our downloads page This fish is blank so you can practice whichever words you choose. It is available to download as an Adobe Acrobat fish_blank.pdf file from our downloads page
Adaptations
  • Use fish with only a few scales. Use other pictures - you could have words written on the petals of a flower. We have used words written on the sections of a tortoise shell. Or feathers on a bird with outstreched wings.
