Essential Linguistics: What You Need to Know to Teach Reading, ESL, Spelling, Phonics and Grammar
David and Yvonne Freeman. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann, 2004.
280 pp. ISBN 0-325-00274-6. Reviewed by Sarah Hudelson, Arizona State University, Tempe Essential Linguistics is a book on linguistics written for educators. The authors, experienced and respected scholars specializing in literacy and bilingual and second language populations, examine concepts basic to the majority of introductory linguistics courses. These include phonology, morphology, and syntax, as well as native language acquisition. However, unlike most other linguistics texts, the authors also offer in-depth discussions about why knowledge of these concepts is important to teachers, and how teachers may use what they have learned about the scientific study of language in their own teaching. They consider specifically the teaching of ESL, reading, spelling, grammar, and phonics. To illustrate this organization and approach, the chapter on phonology, with a focus on English phonemes and articulatory phonetics, includes a discussion of English-speaking children’s acquired, subconscious knowledge of English phonology and phonotactics (how sounds may be combined in English to form words), and it also includes articulatory explanations for why tongue twisters are so hard to produce, as well as classroom resources for tongue twisters in a variety of languages. The following chapter focuses on classroom implications from the study of phonology for teaching reading. Freeman and Freeman provide an extensive exploration of both phonological and phonemic awareness and the arguments that have been made about the significance of such awareness for beginning reading. They then present conclusions regarding how phonemic awareness develops best, as well as their analysis of the role of phonology in the teaching of reading.

127. Welcome To FictionAlley's Quiz On Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation, And Canon Know
Welcome to the Schnooglemods Quiz for spelling, grammar, Punctuation, 1 Please edit the spelling, grammar, and Punctuation errors in this piece.
http://www.fictionalley.org/CodingQuiz.html
Welcome to the Schnooglemods Quiz for Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation, and Canon knowledge. The fic intake team for Fiction Alley comes across pieces that have a variety of errors, including improper spelling and capitalisation of everyday vocabulary as well as of the canon-specific language J.K. Rowling has created. They also read pieces written by authors who write using erratic patterns for grammar and punctuation - some intentionally, others because they know no better. There are also those authors who forget canon details; easily researched facts, like birthdays that Rowling has divulged, what house each DA member is in, and the manifestations of various spells, potions and components should do what canon states that they should, unless the fic is labeled an "AU" or "Alternate Universe" fic. If you're interested in being a part of FA's Fic Intake Team, this quiz is for you. It will test your ability to find errors as you read fanfiction. Will you recognise the correct spelling of character names? Are you aware of the way dialogue punctuation should be written? If you see something that doesn't look quite right, do you know how to verify a source for accuracy? These pieces have been intentionally "doctored" to trip up a reader with errors, with puzzles that may be errors - or may not be. There may be a variety of "right" answers or "correct" alterations for each question or example, as there are a number of creative portrayals of fiction.

If you have too many errors in a document (presumably because it's too long), Word will actually pop a message box telling you something along the lines of "you have too many spelling errors" - perhaps another component in Word is causing unstability?

Social dysfunction syndrome first noted by C. Parkinson noted that, because an atomic plant is so vast, expensive, and complicated that people cannot grasp it, rather than try, they'll fall back on the assumption that somebody else checked details before it got that far. However, everyone knows all about bicycle sheds, and feels no inhibition against debating their pettiest details without limit.

Unedited. So Please Ignore Spelling, Grammar And Other Errors.
Since the election there's been quite a few articles either by or quoting people who are just exasperated that they are so damn sophisticated and smart but are trapped in a nation full of absolute ignorants. My favorite was one that went out to find Christians digusted by the whole "values" thing. One woman said, "Yes, I'm a Christian. But I'm a Christian with a brain." I suspect she may be one of those spiritual people who merely express their spiritualness in a Christian looking manner, but couldn't say for sure just from that statement.
Anyway, reading these things reminded me of a short series I dashed off about a year and a half ago. It was supposed to be a squishy liberal version of The Bleat . So I decided, what the hell, I'll repost them. Well, until the self-loathing over thinking anything is worth reposting takes control.

Grading Criteria for Rewrite and Final Paper 1. Content
The paper must be all your own, original work. You may use secondary sources, and are encouraged to do so. However, if you merely repeat what another says and do not add your own critical analysis your grade will be lowered. (See Grading section below.) You are also responsible for being familiar with all aspects of the University’s policy on plagiarism.
    2. Style
The paper must be double-spaced and have one inch margins. Use 11- or 12-point standard font, such as Times, New York, or Palatino. If you do not know how to write a footnote, cite works, or create a bibliography, consult a good style manual such as The MLA Handbook. The paper must be written in good English prose. Errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and Romanization of Korean will result in a reduced grade. (See Grading section below.) The writing must be your own, although you should consult the Student Writing Center as many times as necessary to get help with your writing and revising of drafts if needed.
Include a bibliography, which may be single-spaced.

Beware of the Grey Language Police!
Some of you might know that I've been typesetting a fairly large book , an activity that, while interesting, enriching and rewarding, is extremely tiresome. It turned out that now I got another book to typeset. This book is just 25% the size of the previous one (i.e., around 100 pages). But there is a big problem with it: The author(s) are not exactly in friendly terms with the Spanish language. Tell me about something time-consuming! The book is so ridden with spelling, grammar, and syntax errors, that if I could fire a bullet for every gross mistake I've found, I would make the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie look pale in comparison. Worse yet... the main author is a distinguished Ph.D. and scholar. Call me a snob, but I find spelling mistakes in my native tongue extremely gross and annoying. It just destroys the image of the writer so much. Thus goes my question: How do you react to those mistakes? What do you do to instill a proper sense of decent writing (in spelling, grammar, and clarity of expression) to your kids? Display Comments »
For whatever its worth: With my kids, I've always had success making fun of bad grammar - highlighting it with humor. I don't take it too seriously and they seem to learn from it. I took a Linguistics class once and they taught me that as long as you get your point across, you're communicating. So I learned to listen to what people are saying instead of how they are saying it. Besides, our language is ridiculously hard to learn. On the other hand, writers should be capable crafters of the English language, so you've got me there.
