Spelling, grammar taking a beating in world of e-mail Thursday, March 30, 2000 By MARTHA IRVINE
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS chicago if you've recieved an e-mail that loks like this ... you'r NOT alone !!!!!!!!! :) Experts say people who communicate via computer are becoming increasingly informal and sloppy. E-mail is routinely strewn with typos, grammatical errors and various shortcuts, such as no capital letters. The trend as relaxed as the Silicon Valley dress code really bugs some grammar purists. "A student wouldn't walk into a professor's office asking a question using bad English. Why would they send me that kind of mistake in an e-mail?" gripes Kenneth Brown, an assistant professor at the University of Iowa business school. An avid tracker of e-mail etiquette, Brown says he regularly chides students for sending sloppy e-mail to him and even to prospective employers. Some faculty members also have gotten a talking to.

113. Civil War Letter From James L. Johnson
Found folded up in a modern envelope, this letter is copied as exactly as it was written, with no corrections for grammar or spelling.
http://pw1.netcom.com/~dgh33/letter.htm
This letter was found folded up in a modern envelope with the following written on it in fairly recent ink: JAMES L. JOHNSON TO MARY L. JOHNSON JAN 1, 1865 The following letter was enclosed. It is written on a single sheet of yellowed lined paper. The letter is copied as exactly as I can read it, with no corrections for grammar or spelling. There were a few places where I could not make out the characters (this was usually in a place where the letter was folded) and I have indicated this by the use of an underscore to approximate the missing letters. The letter is written in fairly good cursive, in pencil, but has faded a good bit over the years making it very difficult to read. The letter starts on the right half of the page, continues to the left-hand side of the back, moves to the right hand side of the back and then concludes on the left hand of the page that it started on. The blank lines represent where the writer went to another page. I have also scanned this letter, and put all four pages on the internet so you can see what the actual letter looks like, and why I had such a difficult time reading it. The four pages can be found at the following locations: If you have any information about any events or people contained in this letter, or want to contact me for any reason, send e-mail to David Hancock at

The English language is a metaphorical mine field. A single word can have a dozen different meanings, while a dozen different words often mean basically the same thing. Illogical spelling conventions confound even the most logical thinker. Should you ever manage to master these nuances of our unique language, myriad obscure or convoluted grammatical rules still litter the literary landscape, waiting to sabotage your personal and professional writing. Used wisely, a grammar checker can be an invaluable ally in this ongoing war of words. HOW GRAMMAR CHECKERS WORK

Information on the organization responsible for safeguarding and enriching the Tahitian language, normalizing vocabulary, grammar and spelling, promoting publication of books in Tahitian and general education in the language.
http://www.tahitinet.com/presense/academy.html
THE TAHITIAN ACADEMY The Tahitian Academy was created by a vote of the Territorial Assembly on August 2, 1972. It was inaugurated on July 2, 1974 by the Governor Daniel Videau and its statutes were approved by the Territorial Assembly on December 5, 1974. The Academy is aimed at safeguarding and enriching the Tahitian language, normalislng the vocabulary, the grammar and the spelling, promoting the publication of books in Tahitian as well as the generalized teaching of the language. Since its foundation, the Academy has written, in collaboration with the Territorial Education Service, the books used for teaching Tahitian in the primary schools. In 1987 it wrote and published a huge grammar (T: tarame) of the Tahitian language (500 ex. in bond version and 2,500 ex. in paperback version) aimed at enacting precise official grammatical and orthographical rules. It searches for the translation of words related to specialized fields of activity (navigation, medicine, meteorology, etc) for which it has until now published two vocabularies. The Academy has also published two volumes of words of contemporary Tahitian which were not listed in the usual dictionaries. Each year, it organizes literary competitions aimed at finding the best works from which abstracts are thereafter published in anthologies by the Academy. Until now two such anthologies have been printed.
