    What is the UIS?
    Definition of UIS
The acronym UIS stands for the , in the original French. Although the name may be written differently in other languages, the original acronym is maintained. The UIS is a non-profit, non-governmental organization which promotes the development of interaction between academic and technical speleologists of a wide range of nationalities to develop and coordinate international speleology in all of its scientific, technical, cultural and economic aspects.
    History
Speleology only took its first steps towards recognition as a science when its techniques were developed at the end of the 19th century. In the mid-1900's, the international speleological community, mostly Europeans, had the idea of holding international speleological congresses. In a meeting on August 22-23, 1949, in Valence, France, the decision was taken to hold the first in Paris, France, in 1953. Since then, International Speleological Congresses have been held in Italy (Bari, 1958), Austria (Vienna, 1961), Yugoslavia (Postojna, 1965), Germany (Stuttgart, 1969), Czechoslovakia (Olomouc, 1973), Great Britain (Sheffield, 1977), United States (Bowling Green, 1981), Spain (Barcelona, 1986), Hungary (Budapest, 1989), China (Beijing, 1993), Switzerland (La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1997), and Brazil (Brasilia, 2001). The next will be in Greece (Athens, 2005).
    Structure
The directions to be taken by UIS are determined by the voting of the delegate of each member country at a General Assembly held during an International Speleological Congress.

Accepted by the International Union of Speleology (UIS) at the General Assembly at the 12th International Congress of Speleology (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, 1997). Modified by the General Assembly at the 13th International Congress of Speleology (Brasilia, Brazil, 2001). Future translations or modifications of this Code should be done taking this English text as base. UIS Home National Organisations de es ... ru UIS supports the international activities of speleological societies, caving groups and karst scientists because they are important for:
    • discovering new caves and extending the exploration of previously known caves; investigating their contents, for example, minerals, biota and archaeological and anthropological remains; distributing the knowledge of karst and caves throughout the world; enabling the exchange of safe caving practices; assisting in the protection and preservation of caves and karst.
To avoid misunderstanding by indigenous and local people, government, and local and national caving organizations in the country in which the proposed cave exploration or scientific investigation is to take place, the UIS has prepared the following recommendations.

    What is caving?
Caving is the exploration of caves. It may not be the first time a cave has been entered but it might be exploration on a personal level by someone who has not been in that particular cave before. Caving usually involves being part of a group of cavers who often get as much fun out of being together as a group as being in the cave. It might mean helping each other through obstacles, sharing the wonder of a passage's beauty with others or just having a good sporting trip.
What will I see in a cave?
Every cave is different, so every cave is a different adventure. In general, you can characterize a cave by the substance in which it is formed, for example, ice, lava, or limestone; however, this still will not describe all of the characteristics of the cave. Factors such as the location and quantity of water sources, the structure and composition of rock layers, and the proximity of fractures and fault zones all work together to produce many variations in how a cave is formed. Each cave is unique.
In general, you can expect to see lots of rock and mud or sand, depending on whether the cave is dry or wet. Many caves have beautiful, multicolored rock or mineral formations or exhibit sculpting caused by the movement of underground streams over time. Others may contain items of historical significance: prehistoric petroglyphs or the remnants of saltpeter vats, moonshine stills, and waterworks.
