What is a cave?
A cave is a natural opening in the ground extending beyond the zone of light and large enough to permit the entry of man. Occurring in a wide variety of rock types and caused by widely differing geological processes, caves range in size from single small rooms to interconnecting passages many miles long. The scientific study of caves is called speleology (from the Greek words spelaion for cave and logos for study). It is a composite science based on geology, hydrology, biology, and archaeology, and thus holds special interest for earth scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey.
Interest in caves has not dwindled. Although firm figures for cave visitors are not available, in 1974 about 1.5 million people toured Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, and more than 67O,000 visited Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, two of the most famous caves in the United States.
Types of Caves
A simple classification of caves includes four main types and several other relatively less important types.

ABOUT US
LAG is a member of the National Speleological Society . This site is under major reconstruction so please be patient. Thanks for dropping by, hope you enjoy your visit. If you have any suggestions feel free to contact the guardian of the cave.
This Grotto was chartered in 1985 and has been active in caving, cave restoration, cave conservation, cave surveying, public education and in exploration of new karst features since the clubs inception. LAG primarily caves in Texas and New Mexico. LAG likes to cave in Texas and keep in touch with our many Texas caving friends. However, due to our isolated western locale, most of our time is spent in southeast New Mexico. This karst region in New Mexico is only a three hour drive, versus a five to seven hour drive to the karst Regions of Texas.
LAG performs volunteer work for the New Mexico Bureau of Land Management The National Forest Service and the National Park Service . LAG's members help other members with research projects which benefit not only the government entities owning caves, but also speleology in general.

Caves have been natural attractions since prehistoric times. Prolific evidence of early man's interest has been discovered in caves scattered throughout the world. Fragments of skeletons of some of the earliest manlike creatures (Australopithecines) have been discovered in cave deposits in South Africa, and the first evidence of primitive Neanderthal Man was found in a cave in the Neander Valley of Germany. Cro-Magnon Man created his remarkable murals on the walls of caves in southern France and northern Spain where he took refuge more than 1O,000 years ago during the chill of the ice age. Interest in caves has not dwindled. Overview:
From March 26 to April 9, 2005, members of the JCO were in the field working under contract to The Nature Conservancy on the caves component of the Parks in Peril Project. This important project consists of a systematic assessment of all of the caves located within the Cockpit Country Ring-road.
This was the first of two sessions that would be spent conducting the TNC-J PiP fieldwork, and was focused as much as possible on hydrologically active caves, in order to have as many done as possible during the dry season. Some 26 caves were visited during the expedition, in the districts of Maroon Town, Elderslie, Rock Spring, and Barbecue Bottom. We were successful in locating and visiting the majority of the many river caves of the Rock Spring area, this done in fine dry conditions.
Amongst the more notable results of the two weeks is the discovery of a species of shrimp
