Comment
This new magazine Speleology replaces as BCRA's 'bulletin'. Council has taken this course of action for a number of reasons. Firstly, there have been discussions for some time on how to consolidate the activities of BCRA, NCA and the various Regional Councils. The bizarre situation where NCA is the national body, but does not allow individual cavers to join, and BCRA, a specialist scientific body, behaves as a representative national body for cavers to join, has long been an anomaly. Secondly, public liability insurance is suffering a shake-up, with premiums likely to rise considerably, and it makes sense that there should be one insurance scheme for cavers. Council is in favour of the 'one stop shop' concept and has issued a statement about which of BCRA's 'national body' activities it is willing to drop in order to promote the new national body 'British Caving Association', and so that BCRA may concentrate on being a specialist scientific body.

Cave Dwelling Bats of East Gippsland
Bats are one of the most fascinating mammals in the world. They are divided into two groups. Megabats (megachiroptera) are the flying foxes or fruit bats. They eat fruit, nectar, blossoms and the like, and use sight to search for food and to navigate. Microbats (microchiroptera), of which almost all species eat insects, mainly use echo location to navigate. Although the subject of some debate, these two groups appear to have developed the ability to fly by independent evolutionary paths. The microbats evolved many millions of years ago and have filled their ecological niche so neatly that they have barely changed since. Of the 14 species of microbats found in East Gippsland, three are trogloxenes - they spend the daylight hours in caves. The remaining 11 species are forest dwelling bats which roost in hollows inside trees during the daylight hours.
Distribution of cave dwelling bats in Victoria The microbats of East Gippsland range in size from 5 to 45 grams. All 14 species eat insects and, because small animals use up energy very quickly, they must consume enormous quantities. For example, a fully mature female Common Bentwing Bat consumes about one third of her own body weight in insects each night.
General Ecology of Cave Dwelling Bats
The cave dwelling bats in East Gippsland are quite small - any of the three species would easily fit into a child's cupped hand. Despite their diminutive size these bats have a major effect on insect populations because of their voracious appetites and their large numbers.

Introduction
Design Context
The very concept of standardisation raises a number of fundamental conflicts in both aims and application. Space will not permit a full discussion of these issues here, nor would it be appropriate, but they must be stated, so that the context within which the following standards were designed is apparent and the areas of necessary compromise defined. Major areas of conflict may be enumerated thus:
  • Whether the map is regarded as: a club or personal record and/or working diagram, or an appendage or illustration in a publication.
